Online shopping environments and consumer’s Need for Touch

Purpose Online shopping has become a commonplace thing nowadays as people can buy products from the comfort of their home. But such environments do not offer a complete sensory interaction as consumers are unable to touch products which is quite important for certain categories of products such as apparels. Therefore, in order to find whether every individual seeks touch equally, the purpose of this paper is to deal with the differences in an individual’s preferences for touch. The study also evaluates customer responses towards the introduction of touch-enabling technology which can, to some extent, compensate for the lack of touch. Lastly, the study includes customers’ views regarding showrooming and webrooming. Design/methodology/approach A total of 203 responses were received through online and offline questionnaires. The data were analysed using ANOVA, correlation and regression analysis through SPSS version 23. Findings The results revealed that gender influenced the Need for Touch (NFT) with women having higher NFT. The people who were high in NFT preferred to buy in-store, whereas their low NFT counterparts were comfortable with both online and in-store options. Lastly, it was found that there was a significant impact of NFT on online buying behaviour. The new technology when used by online retailers would break the barriers that exist between real touch and virtual touch. Originality/value Although previous authors have given several options like mental representations, verbal details and brand image as alternatives to touch but the use of touch-enabling technology can revolutionise the way online products are perceived. The study adds value by relating NFT with online preferences, showrooming and webrooming.

Internet and its growing usage by young generation in India have changed the way consumers shop and buy goods and services. The Indian retail market is witnessing a revolution i.e. young consumers are playing important role in online shopping and looking towards Internet as a unique platform for selling online. In India the visitors of e-tailing sites are accounted to be 40% of youth population, which comprises of youngsters between 15 to 34 years of age. These visitors are part of Indian Internet Population. Not only metros but tier II and III cities are also attracting online retailers. Brand awareness and gap in demand and supply are the main reasons for popularity of online retailers in small cities like Bhopal in India. The study focuses on factors that online buyers consider while shopping online. Some of the factors identified in this research are; scarcity of time with the buyer, availability of payment options like COD, variety of products availability, product pricing, discounts and offers etc. The data is collected using a questionnaire on the sample of 100 people in the age bracket of 15 to 60 years and percentage analysis is done for analyzing the collected data.

With Internet invading geographic boundaries and diverse demographic strata, online shopping is growing at exponential rate. Expected to grow by 45 per cent to $7.69 billion by the end of 2015, India's ecommerce market has emerged as one of the most anticipated destinations for both multinational and domestic retailers. Since their success will depend on their ability to attract shoppers to buy online, it becomes relevant for them to decipher Indian consumers' attitude and behaviour towards online shopping and to predict online buying potential in India. The effectiveness of marketing and promotional strategies and action plans also will have to be pivoted around the potential available in the market. This empirical study explores the accuracy, precision and recall of four different classifying techniques used in predicting online buying. The forecasting ability of logistic regression (LR), artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machines (SVM) and random forest (RF) in the context of willingness of shoppers' to buy online has been compared. Analysis of the data supported most of the predictions albeit with varying level of accuracy. The outcome of the study reflects the superiority of artificial neural network over the other three models in terms of the predicting power. This paper adds to the knowledge body for online retailers in reducing their vulnerability with respect to market demand and improves their preparedness to handle the market response. Managerial implications of the findings and scope for future research have been deliberated.

Online shopping is one of the latest emerging and revolutionary trends influencing the lives of common people. This research paper examines the relationship between demographic variables and internet exposure which are independent variables with the dependent variables i.e. psychological factors and consumer online buying behaviour. People are now moving from conventional shopping towards web based/online shopping because of which they can buy everything from home. The research paper explains the influence of five psychological variables such as security issues, privacy issues, overcharged, fraud/ hackers and lack of trust over the retailer derived from literature. Data from a sample of 298 female students of public and private sector universities of Dera Ismail Khan were collected through the self-developed and standardized questionnaire. Data were analysed by using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation. The statistical analysis of the data reflects a lack of trust over the retailer and privacy concerns are considered as the most relevant factors affecting female consumers’ online buying behaviour.

To avoid risks, consumers tend to be failry thoughtful decision makers. Research has shown that consumers perceive risks associated with purchasing online and as a result online purchasing has not yet reached the numbers that were projected. In order for e-commerce to live up to its full potential, online retailers should gain an understanding of which perceived risks online purchasing consumers are most concerned with. This study aimed to assess the impact of perceived risk on online buying behaviour. Personal interview surveys were conducted in an emerging market whereby 200 respondents that have access to the internet were interviewed in selected malls with regards to their perceived risks when buying online. The results showed that perceived risk does have an impact on online buying behaviour, and that consumers that have not bought online in the past are likely not to do so in the future. The results show that characteristics of emerging markets are sufficiently distinct from developed markets in that consumers in developed markets seem to be more conservative when buying online. Marketers should therefore developed alternative marketing programs when communicating to these markets in an attempt to persuade consumers to buy online.


The concept of online shopping is very popular in the present market scenario. The current trend is indicating the fact that people prefer to shop online because it is easier ad convenient for them. Organizations can easily understand the buying behaviour of the customers by considering different theoretical approaches. The study has indicated that in Saudi Arabia the current trend of online purchasing is at the higher level. People frequently shop online and it is expected that the rate of online shopping in the retail industry in Saudi Arabia will growth further. This study was carried on by using the primary data, which was collected through survey. Survey was conducted with 100 customers in the retail industry in Malaysia. The study used the positivism philosophy for the investigation. The findings in this study are highly important for understanding the latest scenario in the retail industry in Saudi Arabia. The study showed the fact that the people in Saudi Arabia are fond of online shopping. The people are highly motivated for online shopping because of several reasons or benefits that they can enjoy. The findings will be used in the future researches for understanding how the online retail market in Saudi has been developed. This will help to understand the reasons for which the people in this country prefer to shop online. This will also indicate the growth opportunity in the online retailing in Saudi Arabia. The overall findings in this study are highly useful for getting a clear knowledge about the online retailing in Saudi Arabia

Ability to recognize and track patterns in data help businesses shift through the layers of seemingly unrelated data for meaningful relationships. Through this analysis it becomes easy for the online retailers to determine the dimensions that influence the uptake of online shopping and plan effective marketing strategies. This paper builds a roadmap for analyzing consumer’s online buying behavior with the help of Apriori algorithm. The major factors that affect the consumer’s online buying behavior are convenience, ease of use and perceived benefits. Security is also a major consideration when opting to conduct shopping activities online. This study will helping further analyzing the consumer online buying behavior towards Online shopping which will help the retailers to design appropriate marketing strategies for selling their products online which will further help in development of the country.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the relationship between six factors of consumers’ perceived risk and consumers’ online purchase intentions. In particular, this study will examine the relationship between financial risk, product risk, security risk, time risk, social risk and psychological risk and online purchase intention. Design/methodology/approach Survey method was used for the purpose of data collection, and quantitative analysis was used to test the hypotheses. A total of 350 respondents participated on an online survey, and data were quantitatively analyzed via IBM SPSS Statistics 24. Findings The findings from this study suggest consumers’ perceived risks when they intend to purchase online. Five factors of perceived risk have a significant negative influence on consumer online purchase intention, while social risk was found to be insignificant. Among these factors, security risk is the main contributor for consumers to deter from purchasing online. Practical implications This study provides useful information to online retailers in electronic commerce (e-commerce) activities. Previous studies show that many online retailers are still facing some risks in online business, and this will affect the transaction and performance of the retailers. It is hoped that the findings can help online retailers to formulate strategies to reduce risks in the online shopping environment, especially security risks for better e-commerce. Originality/value The development of online shopping has led to some challenges to consumers, which comprise security of payment, data protection, the validity and enforceability of e-contract, insufficient information disclosure, product quality and enforcement of rights. This issue emerged because many online retailers do not understand the main factors that will contribute to consumers’ perceived risk. Consumers’ perceived risks will influence consumer attitudes toward online shopping and purchase behaviors. Studies on consumers’ perceived risks toward online purchase intentions are still inconclusive. Thus, this paper fills the gap in the research area.

Purpose With India becoming world’s second largest user of smartphones (Ming, 2017) and with more users adopting mobile devices for online shopping, Indian online retailers now have to manage mobile channel in addition to existing traditional channel (of computers). Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the mapping of product characteristics with individual channel capabilities and its effect on online consumer behaviour, so that e-tailers can create enhanced online shopping experience for consumers. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive research model is developed on the basis of the knowledge gained from multichannel retailing and e-commerce literature. Then, the model is empirically tested, with primary data collected from 344 customers, using structural equation modelling. The data are collected from customers across two product categories: electronics and fashion. Findings The results reveal that perceived usefulness, perceived risk and perceived self-efficacy are important drivers of online consumer behaviour for continued usage. The multi-group analysis confirms the moderation influence of platform type for some relationships across electronics and fashion. Practical implications The findings underline the importance of multichannel complementarity across electronics and fashion. The preference of mobile devices for fashion and traditional devices such as computers for electronics provides valuable insights for online retailers towards management of multichannel e-commerce ecosystem. Originality/value In Indian context, this is the first empirical research on online multichannel retail setting, studying the impact of diverse channel formats on different product categories. The study’s findings give empirical basis to online retailers to look out for right product–channel fit strategy for engaging consumers in the long run.

The aim of the study is to assess the attitude towards online shopping of the Urban. In this study, we have focused on only the attitude of youths towards online shopping as there were limited past studies on the youth segment. The study was conducted on the age bracket 18-35 who are generally the primary and secondary target market of the online shops. An organized and adaptive survey was conducted on 119 respondents, where convenience sampling was used. The study reveals most of the people visit online sites couple of times a week. Most of the people want to buy products up to BDT 4,000 but are willing to buy products up to BDT 5000 for branded products. So, there is a huge potential for branded products. There are more mobile banking users than bank card holders. Therefore, mobile banking can add new doors for online shopping. Most popular online products are clothing, food & beverage, mobile accessories, electronic goods and beauty products. The major distress appears to be that products delivered do not match product shown in the online shop and product’s quality. People would prefer to physically examine the products before buying it online. The study also reveals previous online buying experience and online reviews have a high influence on online buying behavior. From the study we found people think online shopping is trustworthy. Though people find online shopping convenient and think price is cheaper online but there are room for improvement.
