Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the ground water quality and salinity issues in the fast developing coastal urban lands of two river basins of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, South India. Design/methodology/approach In order to address the water quality of the basins, field sampling was conducted and the samples were analysed in the laboratory. A comparison with water quality standards was also made and the interpretations of the results were done using GIS and statistical tools. Findings The values of conductivity, chlorides and salinity show that the coastal areas of Neyyar and Karamana basins are severely affected by salinity intrusion in addition to the pollution problems. More than 90 per cent of the samples are with hardness lower than 100 mg/l. About 70 per cent of the study area is with calcium concentrations lower than 25 mg/l. The content of sulphate and magnesium in Poovar and Poonthura coastal stretches is found to be higher compared to other regions. Originality/value Since not much work has been published from the study area on these aspects, the hydrochemical characterization is a very important in deciphering the quality of ground water for its proper management. The water quality evaluation and salinity intrusion studies are very important for the future planning and development of this area.

In discussing the water quality evaluation for use in different purposes, the author will briefly examine some of the major important water quality standards. These standards serve as a basis for appraisal of the results of chemical water analysis in terms of suitability of the water for various intended uses. According to total dissolved salts (TDS),  major  ions as cations ( Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+), anions (CO₃2⁻, HCO₃⁻  ,SO₄2⁻, Cl⁻), with some heavy metals such as Al3+, B3+ , Cd2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Mn2+,  Mo2+, Ni2+,  Pb2+, Sr2+, V2+   and Zn2+  The results  indicate  that  the samples of Nubian sandstone aquifer is suitable for drinking of human and livestock , suitable for laundry purposes and for irrigation. While the samples of Fractured dolomite limestone aquifer are unsuitable for drinking and irrigation.

The quality of coastal ground water on small islands has characteristics that are influenced by environmental and area factors. Yeben Island is a small island with an area of 0.57 km2 with priority coastal and marine tourism areas in the islands of Raja Ampat. This study aims to (1) analyze levels of ground water quality parameters and (2) analyze water samples against water quality standards. Groundwater samples taken as many as 4 samples from the study location. The location of water samples is in the morphology of the coastal plain. The analysis of each physical and chemical parameter of each groundwater sample is carried out by comparing the value of drinking water quality standards. The results are presented in a comparison table of quality standards and a graph of scaled values.Based on the results, the laboratory shows that it exceeds the quality standard of physical elements and chemical elements including fluoride, hardness, sulfate and organic substances. In general, the quality of water is poor. Poor ground water quality occurs due to the influence of sea water intrusion.

Water has an important role in life. The use of water in various activities must be based on water quality which is influenced by various aspects, one of it is land cover. This study aims to determine water quality, water quality standards and the effect of land cover on water. This study took samples at six points to determine the physical and chemical quality of water. The results showed that the chemical and physical quality of water in the Latuppa watershed still met water quality standards when there was no rain. Parameters that did not meet when rain occurred in the form of turbidity, TSS, and BOD in the river water of the Latuppa watershed. Water quality of the Siguntu Sub-watershed and the Mangkaluku Sub-watershed in the Latuppa River Basin is still relatively good for the use of raw water for drinking water. The water quality in the Latuppa watershed which is covered by forest land (Siguntu Sub-watershed and Mangkaluku Sub-watershed) is better than non-forested (Rantenase Sub-watershed).

The evaluation of the water quality of the Kune-Vain lagoon complex with regard to general physico-chemical and chemical parameters was the main focus of the present study. This evaluation was based on the requirement of Council Directive of 18 July 1978 on the “quality of fresh waters needing protection or improvement in order to support fish life”, [78/659/EEC] and the requirement of Council Directive of 3 November 1998 relating to the “quality of water intended for human consumption”, [98/83/EC]. Five sampling stations were selected to successfully perform the water monitoring on the Kune-Vaini lagoon complex with a frequency of every two months, from July, 2018- July, 2019. The parameters measured were temperature, pH, conductivity, salinity, DO, BOD, TDS, total hardness, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl– and some heavy metals. The monitored lagoons have shown notable differences based on physico-chemical parameters.

Status of  Ground Water Quality in The Village of Pedurenan, Mustikajaya District, East BekasiSanitation and poor hygiene practice and unsafe drinking water contributes to 88% of childhood deaths from diarrhea in worldwide. For children who survive often suffer from diarrhea contribute to nutritional problems, preventing children to be able to achieve their maximum potential. According to the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) in 2013, the incidence and prevalence of diarrhea for all age groups in Indonesia is 3,5% and 7,0%. Respectively the incidence of diarrhea is closely associated with the quality of sanitation and groundwater used by society. This study aimed to determine the quality of water used for sanitation especially groundwater, in Sub Pedurenan, District Mustikajaya, East Bekasi. Results showed that groundwater quality inspection using the Most Probable Number (MPN) in RW 02, Village and District Pedurenan Mustikajaya, there were 4 samples were negative of coliform, and 25 coliform positive samples, with the highest number of 1100 cells / 100 mL. This indicates that ground water for sanitation and groundwater of sampling locations are generally contaminated by coliform bacteria.

A method is described for calculating the effect of Water Quality Standards on the future use of water supplies drawn from rivers and impoundments. The day-to-day variations of nitrate in rivers have been modelled by Regression Analysis and these models have been used to estimate the quality of water supplies drawn from pumped storage reservoirs. Computer simulation has been used to examine ways of controlling water quality so as to comply with Water Quality Standards.
