A static frequency converter start-up control strategy for pumped-storage power unit is presented. And rotor position detecting without position sensor is realized according to voltage and magnetism equations of ideal synchronous motor mathematics model. The mechanism and implementation method of initial rotor position determination and rotor position estimation under low frequency without position sensor are expounded and validated by simulations. Based on the mentioned control strategy, first set of a static frequency converter start-up device in China for large-scale pumped-storage unit is developed, which is applied to start-up control test in the 90 MW generator/motor of Panjiakou Pumped-storage Power Plant. Test results show that rotor position detecting, pulse commutation, natural commutation, and unit synchronous procedure control of static start-up are all proved. The outcomes have been applied in running equipment, which proves the feasibility of mentioned method.

The presented work provides a detailed description of the method developed by the authors for coordinating the working process of the main elements of the starting system for a modern gas turbine engine for a civil aviation aircraft: an auxiliary power unit (APU) and an air turbine – starter. This technique was developed in the course of solving the practical problem of selecting the existing APU and air turbine for a newly created engine. The need to develop this method is due to the lack of recommendations on the coordination of the elements of the starting system in the available literature. The method is based on combining the characteristics of the APU and the turbine, reduced to a single coordinate system. The intersection of the characteristic’s lines corresponding to the same conditions indicates the possibility of joint operation of the specified elements. The lack of intersection indicates the impossibility of joint functioning. The calculation also takes into account losses in the air supply lines to the turbine. The use of the developed method makes it possible to assess the possibility of joint operation of the APU and the air turbine in any operating mode. In addition to checking the possibility of functioning, as a result of the calculation, specific parameters of the working process at the operating point are determined, which are then used as initial data in calculating the elements of the starting system, for example, determining the parameters of the turbine, which in turn allow providing initial information for calculating the starting time or the possibility of functioning of the starting system GTE according to strength and other criteria. The algorithm for calculating the start-up time of the gas turbine engine was also developed by the authors and implemented in the form of an original computer program. Keywords: gas turbine engine start-up, GTE starting system, air turbine, methodology, joint work, auxiliary power unit, power, start-up time, characteristics matching, coordination, operational characteristics, computer program.

Being a combination of the conference call, talkback radio, audio podcast, and an online video chat, Clubhouse is a new social networking app that gained over 10 million users and over $100 in valuation in just 8 months. Unlike other social networks, it offers a real-time streaming audio chat that does not ask users to share any unnecessary information like exchanging text messages, conducting video calls, or sharing photos. Instead, Clubhouse users can listen to real-time conversations, contribute to these conversations and create their own conversations for the others to listen and to interact with. Often nicknamed a “Silicon Valley’s hottest start-up”, Clubhouse positions itself as an “exclusive” and “alternative” social network that attracts various celebrities and people who just want to talk to each other. Launched in March 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic with its social distancing and lockdowns, Clubhouse offered its users a space for the digital group psychotherapy where people could solve their problems by talking them through with strangers. However, it is unclear what is going to happen to this new social network in the post-pandemic world after all of its hype eventually evaporates. This paper discusses the possible underlying motives for the Clubhouse creation and its real purposes. Moreover, it looks at the three possible scenarios of its further development.

Abstract This paper introduces a novel technique that allows real-time injection monitoring with distributed fiber optics using physics-informed machine learning methods and presents results from Clair Ridge asset where a cloud-based, real-time application is deployed. Clair Ridge is a structural high comprising of naturally fractured Devonian to Carboniferous continental sandstones, with a significantly naturally fractured ridge area. The fractured nature of the reservoir lends itself to permanent deployment of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) to enable real-time injection monitoring to maximise recovery from the field. In addition to their default limitations, such as providing a snapshot measurement and disturbing the natural well flow with up and down flowing passes, wireline-conveyed production logs (PL) are also unable to provide a high-resolution profile of the water injection along the reservoir due to the completion type. DFOS offers unique surveillance capability when permanently installed along the reservoir interface and continuously providing injection profiles with full visibility along the reservoir section without the need for an intervention. The real-time injection monitoring application uses both distributed acoustic and temperature sensing (DAS & DTS) and is based on physics-informed machine learning models. It is now running and available to all asset users on the cloud. So far, the application has generated high-resolution injection profiles over a dozen multi-rate injection periods automatically and the results are cross-checked against the profiles from the warmback analyses that were also generated automatically as part of the same application. The real-time monitoring insights have been effectively applied to provide significant business value using the capability for start-up optimization to manage and improve injection conformance, monitor fractured formations and caprock monitoring.

This article addresses two vectors of VUCA interwoven in the narratives, a summary of personal theories about VUCA. Such theories are anchored and arise from experiential learning in my practice as HR/L&D and OD consultants over the past four decades. The implication for HR and OD profession is to consider their relevance when organisations navigate VUCA. Next is the culling out of the specific learning about HR and OD interphases that has worked in my experience, supported by examples and metaphors. The premise I put forward as conclusion are: In order to be at the centre stage of partnering with business, HR and OD have to complement and innovate new-age VUCA strategies. VUCA competencies with appropriate metrics are in the formative stage. The competencies are emerging from the real-time stories of consultants, companies and academia (TATA 26/11 and DuPont safety mandate). Only when HR and OD integrate and work together can the future of leadership or start-up entrepreneurs learn from their insights to ‘thrive in VUCA’.
