We sought to replicate Ericsson, Krampe & Tesch-Römer's (Ericsson, Krampe & Tesch-Römer 1993 Psychol. Rev. 100 , 363–406) seminal study on deliberate practice. Ericsson et al . found that differences in retrospective estimates of accumulated amounts of deliberate practice corresponded to each skill level of student violinists. They concluded, ‘individual differences in ultimate performance can largely be accounted for by differential amounts of past and current levels of practice’ (p. 392). We reproduced the methodology with notable exceptions, namely (i) employing a double-blind procedure, (ii) conducting analyses better suited to the study design, and (iii) testing previously unanswered questions about teacher-designed practice—that is, we examined the way Ericsson et al . operationalized deliberate practice (practice alone), and their theoretical but previously unmeasured definition of deliberate practice (teacher-designed practice), and compared them. We did not replicate the core finding that accumulated amounts of deliberate practice corresponded to each skill level. Overall, the size of the effect was substantial, but considerably smaller than the original study's effect size. Teacher-designed practice was perceived as less relevant to improving performance on the violin than practice alone. Further, amount of teacher-designed practice did not account for more variance in performance than amount of practice alone. Implications for the deliberate practice theory are discussed.

This article highlights the competitive olympiad activity as one of the tools of the educational process. The authors analyzed the participation of students of the FEFU branch in Nakhodka in competitions and olympiads for the period of 2019. Forms of participation in such competitive olympiad activities are presented. The importance of such events is shown. The use of competitive olympiad activity enables the teacher to unleash the creative potential and intellectual activity of the student. It is shown that, on the whole, such activity will increase interest in learning, motivates to participate in research activities, the ability to apply methods of creative activity in further studies is being formed, the ability to independently search and solve practical problems, to rational activity is developing. By participating in various events of this kind (especially when different areas of knowledge are affected), you can increase student performance. We also note that during such events, the communicative component between the students and the teacher increases, which at the same time can be a subject teacher and the head of a competition or olympiad. It has been noted that recently, such activities in the branch are gaining momentum, and the number of competitions and contests and the participants themselves is increasing annually. After participating, in such external events, students begin to realize that they need to constantly strive for selfdevelopment and increase their skill level. The authors highlighted the difficulties that students encounter in preparing for competitive olympiad activities and shows the role of the leader (curator, tutor, etc.) in solving these difficulties. When analyzing the competitionolympiad activity, it was revealed that the olympiads are disciplinary in nature, and the competitions are creative and research in nature, some are directly related to the chosen specialty.

Many of the skills that define analytics are not new. Nonetheless, it has become a new source of competitive advantage for many corporations. Today's workforce, therefore, must be cognizant of its power and value to effectively perform their jobs. In this chapter, the authors differentiate the role of a business analyst by defining the appropriate skill level and breadth of knowledge required for them to be successful. Business analysts fill the gap between the experts (data scientists) and the day-to-day users. Finally, the section on Manufacturing Analytics provides real-world applications of Analytics for companies in a production setting. The ideas presented herein argue in favor of a dedicated program for business analysts.

For most people, their performance in the labour market determines their station in life. What determines who earns what in the labour market? Are there systemic impediments that inhibit the ability of particular groups to prosper in the labour market? What is the role of education, skills, race, and gender? Are there ways to make the financial return on work greater regardless of skill level? If skills are lacking, are there policies that directly help to close skill gaps? ‘Labour markets’ considers these questions and concludes that a goal of labour market policy is to create pathways out of poverty. Well-functioning labour markets facilitate the economic mobility of people over the course of their lifetimes and across generations.

To determine the role of sensory information in golf putting 22 subjects were classified as either high or low in skill. Subjects from both groups putted from two distances (5 and 15 ft.) under three different conditions: relevant visual cues (look at ball), no visual cues (blindfolded), and irrelevant visual cues (look at offset marker). The 2 × 2 × 3 analysis of variance with radial error as the dependent variable indicated significant main effects for each factor but no significant interactions. Relevant visual cues provided greater accuracy than did no visual cues or irrelevant visual cues.

In the apparel manufacturing process, productivity and quality are somewhat determined by operator skill level. Predicting worker skill level is very important for effective production operation management. However, the current methods for ranking skill level in the manufacturing industry have been based on the subjective evaluation of managers and have failed both in predicting the operator skill level needed for planning and in encouraging operators to develop new skills for quality and productivity. This article develops a new method for grading sewing worker skill levels that employs updated knowledge from experts involved in training, coaching and managing operations in factories. This approach uses the Delphi method combined with principal component analysis to define and classify six qualitative variables that effect on three aspects of operator skill, including coordination skill, sustaining skill, and tool operating skill. Based on these three variables, ordinal logistic regression is applied to grade skill levels, with a statistically significance result.
