Home enteral nutrition (HEN) provides care for the special need for food at home. Although the majority of patients in HEN is clinically stable, support from health professionals, and monitoring and evaluation for maintenance or evolution of therapy are necessary. However, the current pandemic situation of COVID-19 and the lack of specific treatment for coronavirus infection have led to changes in the health services work routine. The social distance recommendation to contain the progress of COVID-19 interferes with the home care service. Thus, in order to provide assistance effectively and safely to the patient, family members and health professionals, adaptations can be made. Therefore, the objective of this manuscript is to discuss elements and recommendations that contribute to HEN care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Depression is a major contributor to the global burden of disease that affects more than 300 million people worldwide. Cross cultural studies find that culture influences levels of trust which can impact upon an individual’s likelihood to seek psychological help when experiencing Depression. Aims: Help seeking is essential for improved mental health outcomes. This study aims to consider how trust affects help-seeking as well as examine the differences in stigma and social distance between participants in Russia and Australia. Method: Participants consisted of two separate samples from Australian ( n = 229) and Russia ( n = 259) which were recruited based on a vignette of a diagnostically unlabelled psychiatric case history with Depression using a cross-cultural research design. They completed items on the level of trust in health professionals, stigma and endorsement of help-seeking. Results: Findings suggest that trust can predict the endorsement of seeking help from a psychologist. Moreover, trust was lower for participants in Russia compared to those in Australia for mental health professionals. Participants in Russia had higher levels of stigma and social distance than their counterparts in Australia. Overall, participants in Australia were more likely to seek professional help than those in Russia. Conclusions: Trust can predict the endorsement of help-seeking from mental health professionals cross culturally. Barriers to help-seeking such as stigma continue to negatively affect mental health outcomes, particularly in Russia.

Background. Stigmatizing attitudes to mental illness, and especially schizophrenia, are not limited to the general population but are also common among health professionals. Health professionals are in a position to model health related attitudes both in the general public and patients. Medical students are an interesting group to focus upon, since they are future health professionals and correcting stigmatizing attitudes is still possible during their educational curriculum.Methods. This study investigated the attitude toward mental illness in medical students at the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy. We surveyed first year students, since they have not yet received specific classes or internships in psychiatry; 322 students from the Romanian and English sections participated, representing a response rate of 94.7%. The questionnaire consisted of the Romanian and English versions of Link's Social Distance Scale towards people with mental illness scale.Results. Overall, medical students had a relatively negative attitude towards people with mental illness, with moderate social distance and stereotypical attitudes. The level of personal contact with people with mental illness was correlated with positive attitudes. International students had scored lower then Romanian students on social distance toward mentally ill patients.Conclusions. Medical education can play an important role in the attitudes of students toward mental illness. Medical students have stigmatizing attitudes about mentally ill patients. Personal contact with people suffering from mental illness might contribute to a positive attitude from the medical students toward mentally ill patients.

Background: General practitioners (GPs) play a key role in the care of somatic and psychiatric problems in people diagnosed with schizophrenia (PWS). It is probable that, like other health professionals, GPs are not all free of prejudices toward PWS. In clinical practice, GPs sometimes interact with clients diagnosed with schizophrenia by specialists, passively accepting this diagnosis. Other times, GPs interact with clients having symptoms of schizophrenia but who have not been diagnosed. In this case, GPs are expected to actively make a diagnosis. Giving the key role of GPs in the process of care, it is worthwhile examining whether passive acceptance and active usage of the diagnosis schizophrenia have differential effects on GPs’ attitudes toward people with this disorder. Aims: To investigate GPs’ views of schizophrenia and whether they were influenced by a ‘schizophrenia’ label, passively accepted or actively used. Methods: A total of 430 randomly selected GPs were invited to complete a questionnaire about their views of schizophrenia, either after reading a description of this disorder and making a diagnosis, or without being provided with a description but passively accepting the label ‘schizophrenia’ given in the questionnaire. Results: The GPs who passively accepted the label schizophrenia ( n = 195) and those who actively identified schizophrenia from the description ( n = 127) had similar views. Compared to the GPs who did not identify schizophrenia in the description ( n = 65), those who used the diagnosis, actively or passively: more frequently reported heredity and less frequently psychosocial factors as causes of the disorder; were more skeptical about recovery; were more convinced of the need for long-term pharmacotherapies; believed more strongly that PWS should be discriminated against when in medical hospital; and perceived PWS as more dangerous and as kept at greater social distance. Conclusion: The diagnosis ‘schizophrenia’, however used, is associated with pessimistic views. Stigma education should be provided to GPs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has quickly and radically transformed health systems worldwide. The challenges are imposed by the need for social distance, remote management of less severe cases, and the constant need for updating health care professionals and the population with reliable information. We aim to describe the experiences and developments of a Brazilian telehealth public service during the pandemic. Numerous tools have been developed and made available, to be used in an integrated manner, by both health professionals and the general public. Those included a chatbot for guidance, a teleconsultation platform combined with a telemonitoring system, a teleconsulting service, and a tele-education program. The TNMG services appear to be efficient and robust during the health crisis of COVID-19, through different tools and methodologies focused on both professionals and users of the health systems.

The present study investigated how laypeople and professionals (N = 185) judge the rights of someone affected with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and whether social distance exists toward this person. Participants completed a questionnaire after reading a vignette describing a target person with an early stage of AD. Half of the participants responded to a female target, the other half to a male target. Results showed that the rights and competencies of the persons are rated high and social distance is exhibited only to a minor degree, although there was a significant difference between the male and female targets. Furthermore, health professionals approved more rights than laypeople, which suggests that there is a need for more detailed information about this disease in the general population.
