Hosting the Olympics is a singular opportunity to build an updated narrative of the nation. Such a narrative is traditionally intended to emphasize the hosting country contributions toward the modern project through the displaying of key nationalistic accounts linking the country’s history to the development of western society. In the case of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, its organizing committee has sought into Brazil’s history different elements that were central to both the formation of Brazilian identity and the discussion over current global issues. Therefore, the country’s enduring relation with nature as well as national narratives such as modernist Anthropophagy, the discourse of ethnic miscegenation, and the myth of Brazil as a racial democracy became historical credentials to use environmentalism and tolerance as the paramount features of Rio-2016’s aesthetics as well as a means to denounce xenophobia and the effects of the Anthropocene on the planet. We argue that the exposition of these two issues in the event’s ceremonies was a way to symbolically insert the country within modernity’s forefront. In this article, we examine the sociopolitical aspects that led to the creation and popularization of Brazilian nationalistic narratives that were later used during the Rio 2016 opening ceremony and the ways such aspects were internationally conveyed during the aforementioned theatrical presentation.

Resumo: Este artigo apresenta uma discussão sobre as noções de democracia, democracia racial e ordem social, a partir da análise do processo de construção de duas pesquisas efetuadas sobre um mesmo espaço: a orla do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil – em dois momentos distintos: a virada do século XX para o XXI e os anos 10 de século XXI. As noções acima citadas são estudadas a partir dos pontos de vista dos diversos segmentos sociais que frequentam e trabalham no local, inclusive agentes do Estado, no caso do segundo momento, que privilegia a ação de segurança pública intitulada “Choque de Ordem”. Para isso, usou-se metodologia qualitativa, através de entrevistas em profundidade e etnografia, além de levantamento documental de leis, ordenamentos e pesquisa bibliográfica sobre tais temáticas. Como conclusões, salienta-se que as formas de entendimento do que seja democracia e ordem dependem da posição que cada grupo social ocupa na sociedade brasileira mais ampla, e são atravessadas e modeladas por critérios étnico-raciais e de classe. Observa-se também a importância política que o espaço público praia assume para dar visibilidade às disputas de sentido em torno de questões como igualdade, liberdade e hierarquias de classe e de cor na sociedade brasileira.Palavras-chave: praia; ordem social; “Choque de Ordem”; democracia. ***Abstract:  This paper is intended to discuss the notions of democracy, racial democracy and social order, by analyzing the building process of two researches which focused the same place: Rio de Janeiro’s beaches, in Brazil. These two researches took place at distinct historical moments; one, at the last years of XX century, and the other, in the first decade of the XXI century. The notions cited above are studied from the perspectives of the various social segments that frequently go or work there, especially State agents which are part of the public policy named “Choque de Ordem” (a kind of “Order Assault”). In order to do this, these researches are based on qualitative methodology, with interviews and ethnography, and also on documental study of the laws which inflects on this public territory, and bibliographic research on these issues. As a conclusion, the article points out that the way people understand democracy and social order will depend on the position each group has in the broader Brazilian society, and that these ideas are tied to and are modeled by ethnic and class criteria.  Its stresses also the political relevance that this public space, the beach, assumes, in order to give visibility to the dispute around the meaning of equality, freedom and hierarchies of color/race and class in Brazilian society.Key words: beach; social order; “Choque de Ordem”; democracy. ***Resumen:Este paper presenta una discusión de las ideas de democracia, democracia racial y orden social, a partir de la análisis del proceso de construcción de dos pesquisas efectuadas en lo mismo local: las playas de Rio de Janeiro, en Brasil, en dos momentos distintos: fines del siglo XX e mediados del siglo XXI. Las dichas nociones son analizadas a partir del punto de vista de los diversos segmentos sociales que van o trabajan en este local, incluso agentes del Estado, en lo segundo momento, que se detiene en la acción de seguridad publica denominada el “Choque de Ordem”. Para eso, se usó la metodología cualitativa, con base en entrevistas y etnografía, y también en las leyes, ordenamientos e demás estudios sobre tales temáticas. Como conclusiones, enfatizase que las formas de comprenderse el significado de democracia y de orden dependen de la posición que cada grupo social tiene en la sociedad brasileña más amplia, y son travesadas y modeladas por criterios etnicoraciales y de clase social. Observase también la importancia política que éste espacio público, la playa, asume en dar visibilidad a las disputas de sentido sobre asuntos como igualdad, libertad y jerarquías de clase y de color en la sociedad brasileña.Palabras clave: playa; orden social; “Choque de Ordem”; democracia.

O artigo trata sobre aspectos que definem a importá¢ncia do sá­tio histórico e arqueológico Cais do Valongo, situado na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, para a história da escravização de africanos e seus descendentes nas Américas e, em especial, no Brasil. Além de ressaltar a relevá¢ncia desse bem, reconhecido em 2017 como Patrimônio Mundial pela UNESCO, também aborda o seu significado como sá­tio histórico de memória sensá­vel e lugar de memória do tráfico atlá¢ntico de africanos escravizados. Ao longo do texto, são abordadas ideias-chave, tais como passados sensá­veis, violência, dor e sofrimento em perspectiva histórica, indicando possibilidades de comparação com outros espaços no mundo, considerando tragédias humanas e conceitos utilizados nos estudos sobre esses processos. Finalmente, o texto analisa elementos em torno da história da região do Cais do Valongo como espaço de resistência e de afirmação das populações negras.Palavras-chave: Cais do Valongo. História dos africanos no Brasil.HISTORY, PATRIMONY AND SENSITIVE MEMORY:  the Pier of Valongo in Rio de JaneiroAbstract: The article deals with aspects that define the importance of the historical and archaelogical site of Valongo Wharf, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, for the history of enslavement of Africans and their descendants in the Americas and especially in Brazil. In addition to highlighting the relevance of this property, recognized in 2017 as a Worl Heritage Site by UNESCO, it also addresses its significance as a historical site of sensitive memory and a place of memory for the Atlantic traffic of enslaved Africans. Throughout the text, key ideas such as sensitive past, violence, pain and suffering are discussed in historical perspective, which indicates possibilities of comparison with other spaces in the world, considering human tragedies and concepts used in the studies on these processes. Finally, the text analyzes other elements around the history of the Valongo Wharf region as space of resistance and affirmation of the black populations.Keywords: Valongo Wharf. History of Slavery. Como, por que e para quem são produzidas as políticas urbanas para os jogos esportivos na cidade do Rio de Janeiro? Os dados apresentados neste trabalho resultam de pesquisa realizada sobre os Jogos Pan-Americanos no Rio de Janeiro, em 2007. O artigo está estruturado em três eixos: discurso oficial; produção e apropriação social dos projetos; cidade democrática. No primeiro eixo, examinamos o que se veiculou como as benesses que os Jogos trariam para a cidade; no segundo, os projetos, a construção e a apropriação social dos equipamentos; e no terceiro, fazemos uma proposta de política pública para o que designamos “uma cidade democrática”. Este encaminhamento analítico tornou possível observar, analisar e apresentar a distância que existe entre o discurso oficial e a realidade dos interesses que compuseram as estratégias para os jogos na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. The data presented here result from a research conducted on the Pan American Games held in Rio de Janeiro in 2007. The paper is divided in three axes: official discourse; production and social appropriation of the projects; democratic city. The first axis will examine what was reported as benefits that the Games would bring to the city; in the second, the projects, the construction and the social appropriation of the equipments; and in the third, we will make a public policy proposal for what we call “a democratic city”. This analytical way allowed us to observe, analyze and present the gap between the official discourse and the interests that made up the strategies for the games in Rio de Janeiro. O presente artigo parte da sistematização das práticas pedagógicas interdisciplinares (Geografia e História) realizadas ao longo do ano de 2019 no Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET), Unidade Maria da Graça (Rio de Janeiro), para dialogar e debater as questões raciais e o ensino decolonial. Nesse intuito, foram realizadas três saídas de campo: primeiramente para o Museu Nacional de Bela Artes, em seguida ao sítio inscrito pela UNESCO como Patrimônio Mundial, conhecido como Pequena África e por fim a região da Praça XV de Novembro. A atividade trouxe novos olhares a respeito da paisagem da cidade do Rio de Janeiro e levou os discentes a refletirem sobre mudanças e permanências no uso do espaço urbano. Essas mediações ganharam corpo através de uma série de publicações realizadas pelos alunos nas redes sociais.  Palavras-chave Praça VX, Interdisciplinaridade, Educação étnico-racial, Paisagem carioca.   DECOLONIAL EDUCATION: the landscape and the black History in the narratives of downtown Rio de Janeiro Abstract This article starts from the systematization of interdisciplinary pedagogical practices (Geography and History) carried out throughout 2019 at the Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET), Maria da Graça Unit, to dialogue and debate on racial issues and the decolonial teaching. With this in mind, three field trips were made: first to the National Museum of Fine Arts, then to the UNESCO World Heritage site known as Little Africa and finally to the Praça XV de Novembro region. The activity brought new perspectives on the landscape of the city of Rio de Janeiro and led students to reflect on changes and permanencies in the use of urban space. En el pasado Año Internacional de la Luz, 2015, se volvió a reconocer la necesidad de protección de nuestro hábitat natural como patrimonio de la humanidad y se revisaron las líneas de acción para un uso eco-eficiente de la energía. El sol es nuestra principal fuente, aparentemente inagotable, de energía y, por tanto, nuestro principal patrimonio a proteger. El artista contemporáneo mantiene su responsabilidad como conservador de este patrimonio y actúa como gestor cultural y educador social trabajando junto a científicos e ingenieros en los laboratorios ACT (Arte-Ciencia-Tecnología). En ellos el artista investiga distintas formas de  gestión y aprovechamiento eco-eficiente de la energía solar, crea nuevas intervenciones artísticas y tecno-científicas en el espacio urbano y desarrolla nuevos códigos de lenguaje que sirvan de puente entre la política medioambiental y la educación de la sociedad. Este artículo retomará el concepto de <<escultura social>> promovido por Joseph Beuys para analizar aquellos proyectos artísticos de determinados laboratorios ACT que <<recodifican>> los objetos de nuestro espacio social y utilizan la tecnología solar de manera sostenible con el fin de concienciar al ciudadano de nuestros problemas medioambientales. The educational and cultural management of artists in the the AST (Art- Science -Technology) laboratories.During International Year of Light, 2015, nature is recognized as a World Heritage Site nad therefore it should be protected. ONU agreement settles down several lines to conduct an ecological use of energy. Sun provided us our main energy, consequently it is our main World Heritage. Artist must protect it. Scientifics, enginers and artists are working together in AST (Art- ScienceTechnology) laboratories to research about solar energy, to create <> and to develope a new code to connect political-ecological will and social education. This article takes the concept defined by Joseph Beuys in 1982, <>, to discuss about those artistical projects of AST laboratories, which re-define the objects of our social environment, using an eco-efficient solar technology, for a civic education. We will check the international agreements of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) from Río de Janeiro Earth Summit (ECO 92) to prove that these projects are ecoeficients and work for a sustainable development of the environment.

In this paper the author focuses on the various ways people from an outlying area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, understand the concepts of heritage, memory and place. Facing a radical transformation of their neighborhood conducted by the city government, they discuss the destiny of an old movie theater that is threatened with demolition. Some of them understand it as a heritage site to be protected and preserved because it supposedly expresses the memory of the neighborhood. Others affirm that the best way to deal with the problem is to demolish the old building and construct a new public square. The point made by the author is that we are facing two quite distinct ways of understanding the concept of heritage: one of them is based on an abstract and legal perspective; the other based on the everyday life experience of local residents.

AbstractRio's pre-Lenten carnival and its Afro-Brazilian dance, samba, have been symbols of Brazilian identity since the 1930s. This article explores the choreographical antecedents of samba, before the crystallisation of the modern dance genre with that name, highlighting the importance of earlier social dances in the evolution of the twentieth-century symbol. It traces the development of carnival dancing in Rio de Janeiro from the time when few danced, through the long reign of the polka, to the emergence of generalised carnival street dancing around 1889. A modified view of the roots of samba has interesting implications for on-going debates on the social meaning of Brazilian carnival.

The main goal of this work is to understand the different uses and social practices expressed in Parque do Flamengo [Rio de Janeiro, Brazil], a World Heritage Site since 2012. Much more than just a leisure space, disputes and tensions are also manifested in Aterro do Flamengo. Sports, commercial, educational, recreational, spiritual and medicinal practices inscribe in this site different logics as well as different memories and body techniques. In the practices of work, sporting and commemorative that were observed in 2018, the body appears as a place of memory. In our analysis, we used a hermeneutic-interpretative approach and a relational anthropological look. The methodology used in this work, has a qualitative nature and makes use of bibliographic and fieldwork research and also photography.
