Objective: This study aimed to compare women’s body image, sexual function and satisfaction before and after gynecologic cosmetic surgery. The study also aimed to assess women husband’s sexual satisfaction. Materials and methods: This was a pretest-posttest study. A sample of 50 women attending the pelvic floor clinic of Tehran University of Medical Sciences for gynecologic cosmetic surgery was entered into the study. Surgeries included labiaplasty, clitoral hoodectomy, vaginoplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, anterior and posterior colporrhaphy, perineoplasty, and perineorrhaphy. Women were assessed for the Body Image Quality of Life Inventory (BIQLI), the Larson Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSSQ-F), and Female Sexual Function Inventory (FSFI-6) at two points in time: baseline (one week before surgery) and 3 months after surgery. Similarly, the male partners were assed for sexual satisfaction using the Larson Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSSQ-M). To analyze the data paired samples t-test was applied. Results: The mean (SD) age of women was 43.36 (8.6) years and the mean (SD) duration of marriage was 22.18 (9.7) years. Ninety-four percent had history of vaginal delivery and 58.7 percent attend surgery due to husband’s sexual dissatisfaction. The results showed that women’s body image, sexual function and couples’ sexual satisfaction improved significantly after gynecologic cosmetic surgery (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: The findings suggest that female genital cosmetic surgery improved the body image and sexual function of women and sexual satisfaction in couples that might lead to a more pleasurable and healthier marital relationship.

Physically active people are usually more satisfied with their bodies than are sedentary people (Davis, 2002), but the influences exerted by physical activity on body image (BI) are not clear. In the current study, the effects of a posture correction exercise (PCE) session on attitudinal state BI were examined. We wanted to know if a single PCE session could have an immediate and positive influence on attitudinal state BI in women. Participants (217 women) were randomized into 2 groups either taking part in a PCE (experimental condition) or a reading-a-newspaper (RN; control condition) session, in a cross-over design. Before and after PCE and RN sessions, participants completed the Body Image States Scale (Cash, Fleming, Alindogan, Steadman, & Whitehead, 2002), indicating their attitudinal state BI at that time. Results showed an immediate increase in state BI scores after a 1-hour PCE session, suggesting that the acute effect of PCE causes an improvement in attitudinal state BI.

Purpose: Fitness testing is common within physical education, but there has been considerable debate about the pedagogical purpose and potential psychological implications of this practice. The aim of this study was to conduct a pilot experimental study to determine the impact of traditional fitness testing approaches on the body image, self-esteem, mood, and attitudes toward fitness testing of a sample of Australian students. Method: Fifty-one students in Grades 7–10 completed a questionnaire before and after their usual two traditional fitness testing classes at their school. Results: Repeated-measures analysis of variance revealed there were no significant differences from T1 to T2 on body image, self-esteem, or mood scores. However, there were significant differences observed over time, for participants aged over 15 years, whose self-esteem, social self-esteem subscale, and attitudes toward fitness testing scores, decreased from T1 to T2. Conclusion: This study provides initial evidence that older students may experience a decline in self-esteem due to fitness testing.

The paper presents the analysis of the positive body image formation among young women, characterizes determinants of female body image and describes the results of an experimental study. The purpose of the study was to test the possibility of developing a positive body image by the means of psychological training. The study involved women aged 18—20 (N=64). The methods included questionnaires and interviews. The results show that the body image of young women was associated with unrealistic external standards, and there is a certain ambivalence to them. On the one hand, the indicators of the component of the body image which included information and evaluation are quite high in youth, but body dissatisfaction is also high and a significant part of the girls rely on external standards in assessing attractiveness. In the course of the formative experiment, it was found that the development of positive body image is promoted by personal psychological training aimed at reducing weight and body shape concerns, expanding internalized stereotypes about the body and increasing the body’s worthiness (differences in the body image components before and after training are significant at p≤0.05).

Objective: to evaluate the changes in perception of body image in patients with dorsopathies after restorative procedures (with the example of massage).Materials and methods. The study involved 50 patients with spinal diseases (of which 13 had intervertebral disc hernias, 13 patients had protrusions, 22 had scoliosis, 46 had osteochondrosis and 8 patients had spinal traumas). To assess the dynamics of the psychoemotional state and the attitude toward the body, we used the eight-color version of Lьscher color test and the color metaphors technique offered by I.L. Solomin and modified for the research task. Each patient was treated by a course of medical massage (10 sessions). Assessment of psychological parameters was conducted before and after the course of medical massage with the aim to establish the changes in the psychological state. The methods of descriptive statistics, the Student’s test for dependent samples and the procedure of tree clustering were used.Results. The average and elevated levels of non-productive neuropsychic tension after treatment of patients either significantly and statistically significantly decreased or completely normalized. Exhaustion and lethargy in most cases were replaced by higher levels of activity and mobilization of physical and psychological resources. Psychosemantic analysis indicates that after massage sessions, important life values related to health and perception of oneself as more necessary and attractive are allocated in clusters. There is a reason to conclude that a person ceases to “indulge in illness,” and opens up to the external environment, thus family and romantic relationships improve.Conclusion. After a course of medical massage, in addition to the therapeutic effect, patients’ overall psychoemotional state and attitude toward their own bodies improve.

Objective: The aim of our study is to see if after surgical intervention there is an increase in self-esteem and decrease in body uneasiness in subjects with Gender Dysphoria. Also we have to compare the results between male-to-female transexual and female-to-male transexual, between young and old subjects and correlation between self-esteem, body uneasiness and personality and psychopathology. Design and Method: We recruited 30 subjects with GD (MtF-TR and FtM-TR) before and after surgical intervention and we have them administered three tests : BUT, Body Uneasiness Test (Cuzzolaro et al., 2000) for the measurement of distortion of body image; BASIC SE, Basic Self-Esteem Scale, (Forsman et al., 2003 ) for the measurement of self-esteem and MMPI-2 for the personality and psychopathology. Results: Our hypothesis was confirmed. The results before and after surgical intervention indicated that also the distortion of the body image were inversely proportional to levels of self-esteem and that there was a difference in levels of selfesteem between MtF-TR and FtM-TR and between young and old subjects. Conclusions: The results appear to suggest that the Self-Esteem Training could be successful in improving body image and in increasing body satisfaction in GD subjects. It might be interesting to see if, after the operation, the level of self-esteem and the perception of body image would change.

BackgroundPeritoneal dialysis (PD) is probably underused because of fears concerning the body image of patients. For the purposes of providing exact information for patients when choosing between PD and hemodialysis, we studied the extent of increase in waist circumference by infusing dialysate.MethodsThe abdominal circumference of 44 PD patients was measured before and after infusion of dialysate. The change in circumference was compared to body mass index (BMI) and length of the abdominal cavity, defined by the distance between the processus xiphoideus and the os pubis.ResultsMean abdominal circumferences at the umbilicus and the iliac crest increased from 92.6 ± 10.1 to 95.5 ± 10.0 cm and from 95.2 ± 8.5 to 96.2 ± 6.3 cm, respectively, when dialysate was infused ( p value for both < 0.01). A dialysate volume of 2000 mL increased the circumference only slightly more than the increase seen with 1500 mL. The change in circumference was not correlated with the circumference before the infusion, BMI, height of the patient, or length of the abdominal cavity.ConclusionsThis study shows that normal PD fill volumes increase the waist circumference only a little. This finding should ease the patient's presumption of PD changing the body image.
