BackgroundPeritoneal dialysis (PD) is probably underused because of fears concerning the body image of patients. For the purposes of providing exact information for patients when choosing between PD and hemodialysis, we studied the extent of increase in waist circumference by infusing dialysate.MethodsThe abdominal circumference of 44 PD patients was measured before and after infusion of dialysate. The change in circumference was compared to body mass index (BMI) and length of the abdominal cavity, defined by the distance between the processus xiphoideus and the os pubis.ResultsMean abdominal circumferences at the umbilicus and the iliac crest increased from 92.6 ± 10.1 to 95.5 ± 10.0 cm and from 95.2 ± 8.5 to 96.2 ± 6.3 cm, respectively, when dialysate was infused ( p value for both < 0.01). A dialysate volume of 2000 mL increased the circumference only slightly more than the increase seen with 1500 mL. The change in circumference was not correlated with the circumference before the infusion, BMI, height of the patient, or length of the abdominal cavity.ConclusionsThis study shows that normal PD fill volumes increase the waist circumference only a little. This finding should ease the patient's presumption of PD changing the body image.

Stress is an individual's adaptive response to various external pressures or demands and produces a variety of disorders including physical, emotional and behavioral disorders. Final year students often experience feelings of stress so that it can interfere with concentration to attend lectures and can even hamper completing education in a timely manner. There are several ways of managing stress, one of which is using aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is a non-pharmacological therapy, which is a type of therapy that applies direct body contact and has a therapeutic effect that combines physiological effects, caused by massage on the body, with psychological effects, which are derived from essential oils. The general purpose of the study is to analyze the effect of aromatherapy on blood pressure and stress levels by using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale in final semester students. The research method used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design approach, in 28 intervention groups, namely respondents who were given lavender aromatherapy massage and 28 respondents in the control group. The univariate analysis was conducted to show frequency distribution and bivariate analysis was conducted by independent sample T-test and dependent sample T-test. The results showed that there were significant differences in systolic blood pressure before and after the intervention in the intervention and the control group with a p-value of 0.01 < 0.05. Whereas the stress level variable found that there is no difference in stress levels in the intervention and the control group before and after the intervention with p-value 0.169> 0.05.

In order to evaluate peritoneal membrane function and responsiveness of peritoneal microcirculation to vasoactive agents in long-term continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients, we studied peritoneal clearances of urea (Curea) and creatinine (Ccr), protein concentrations in drained dialysate (D PC), peritoneal glucose absorption (% GA), and drained dialysate volume ( VD) before and after nitroprusside (NP) addition to dialysis solution in 17 long-term CAPD patients (mean duration of CAPD: 52 months) and the results were compared to those of 18 patients who were just trained for CAPD (mean duration: 0.6 month). There were no differences in the control (without NP) Curea, Ccr, D PC, %GA, and VD between the new and long-term CAPD patients. Curea, Ccr, and D PC increased significantly with NP in both new and long-term patients. Curea and Ccr with NP were not different between the new and long-term patients but D PC with NP was significantly lower in the long-term CAPD patients. The results of this study suggest that peritoneal solute clearances and the responsiveness of peritoneal microcirculation to NP remain unchanged after four years of CAPD, despite recurrent episodes of peritonitis.

Pregnancy is a period of both hormonal and non-hormonal overall change in the body. Emotional instability is commonly experienced by women during this period. However, this somewhat complex issue is often not addressed optimally. Pharmacological therapies using CPZ and lithium are often administered, but they have effects for the body. Therefore, there is a need to administer non-pharmacological therapy that has minimum side effects. This research aims to increase the healthy energy within the body using Pranic Healing, which is measured by the Bio-Well GDV camera. This research employed the pretest-posttest method on two groups (treatment and control) using the Randomized Controlled Trial design. Pranic Healing therapy was performed for 30 minutes once a week for 3 weeks, while GDV measurement was performed once a week for 4 weeks. Paired t-test results for Pranic Healing on emotional pressure showed p-value of 0.0001 (<0.05) for posttest2 and p-value of 0.005 (<0.05) for posttest3. Meanwhile, the control group did not indicate any changes in emotional stress both before and after treatment. It is found that Pranic Healing as measured using a bio-well GDV camera is capable of improving health energy within the body by relieving emotional stress experienced in trimester III primigravida.

Introduction: the eating habits of young people have changed significantly over the last few decades. Teenagers tend to have less than desirable intake of fruits, vegetables, dairy products and wholegrain products, and higher intake of foods high in saturated and trans fats, leading to increased waist circumference and consequent increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Objective: to analyse the relationship between dietary intake as predictor of and increased abdominal circumference in teenagers. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 818 teenagers aged between 10 and 14 years, of both genders, enrolled in state public schools in the metropolitan region of Vitória, Espirito Santo, Brazil, from August 2012 to October 2013. Waist circumference (WC) measurements were carried out in duplicate and the arithmetic mean was calculated. The dietary intake was identified from a simplified food questionnaire containing foods whose consumption is high or that present excessive risk of coronary heart disease in teenagers. The statistical analysis was done through Pearson’s chi-squared test. Results: a proportion of 55.9% of the sample had an adequate food intake, 15.6% a high intake and 28.5% an excessive intake. Among teenagers who had an adequate, high and excessive dietary intake, 5.6% (N = 46), 1.1% (N = 9) and 2.6% (N = 21) had increased WC, respectively. The result of the chi-squared test indicated no association between dietary intake as predictor of cardiovascular risk and WC, p-value = 0.576. Conclusion: there was no association between dietary intake presenting cardiovascular risk and increased waist circumference.
