Purpose This study aims to investigate whether leader–subordinate exchange (LMX) quality influences subordinate resilience. Drawing upon Higgins’ (1998) regulatory focus theory, it is hypothesized that high LMX leaders induce a positive appraisal of situations which primes promotion regulatory focus in subordinates which in turn increases employee motivation and resilience. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a cross-sectional survey design. Responses were collected from 139 employees of three information technology and enabled services organizations in India. Data were analyzed using PLS-based structure equation modeling package ADANCO. Findings LMX was found to be positively related to employee resilience. Promotion regulatory focus mediated the relationship between LMX and employee resilience. Practical implications The study demonstrates that leader interaction and behaviors can promote resilience in employees. Organizations need to see how supervisors can be trained to “frame” challenges and adversity in a manner that motivates employees and promotes resilience. Originality/value Previous studies have found different types of leadership styles to be associated with subordinate resilience. This suggests that there are certain factors across various leadership styles that influence resilience. The study uses LMX theory to suggest that it is not leadership style but underlying dimensions such as trust, reciprocity and clarity that play a vital role in cultivating employee resilience.

AbstractThe focus on educational quality on the single school-level and the aim for ongoing school-improvement direct the attention to investigating the quality of leadership of school administrators. However, despite a large number of educational leadership models, some do not provide a sound theoretical framework, as they confound domains and tasks with the leadership style or identify leadership styles that are based on inconsistent assumptions of motivational psychology. In this paper, a leadership model for the specific context of leading school improvement processes is designed using a functional approach, which is based on the theory of personality systems interactions (PSI). We identified four styles of leadership enactment: the (1) visionary-enthusiastic, the (2) (latent) anxious-goal-fixated, the (3) passive-avoidant, and the (4) self-directed style. The newly developed instrument was validated for a sample of n = 901 teachers and k = 75 principals. In the discussion section, particular attention is paid to the self-directed style, for which favorable effects can be postulated both in the change management of school improvement processes and in regard to the motivational experience of teachers.

The research was conducted in the positivist paradigm to determine the interactive effect of school principals' leadership style and the teaching characteristics (traditional Vs. Progressive) of school teachers on curriculum implementation. The research further explores how teaching characteristics mediate between school principals' leadership style and curriculum implementation. Higher secondary school teachers' perceptions were collected from 600 teachers teaching at secondary schools in six districts of Punjab. Multistage sampling was used to draw a sample from a large and diverse population. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to determine the relationship among various constructs leadership styles, teacher characteristics, and strategies used for the curriculum implementation at secondary schools of Punjab. Path analysis using Structure Equation Modeling with AMOS yielded unique relationships among leadership styles of school principals and teacher characteristics for curriculum implementation. Democratic style of school principals was found to exert maximum direct influence on curriculum implementation with no teacher characteristics mediation. However, it is found that both teacher characteristics play a significant mediating role in curriculum implementation; the visionary style was best mediated through progressive characteristics, and 2) commanding style was mediated through traditional characteristics. The research draws attention to existing gaps in developing teacher expertise for curriculum implementation, which need to be addressed to prepare future teacher leadership in Pakistan.

This paper is intended to provide input to school principals or leaders of educational institutions to not only pay attention to aspects of intellectual and spiritual intelligence in the use of leadership style, but also attention to aspects of emotional intelligence because this aspect has an important role in interacting with subordinates. Emotional intelligence is interpreted as the ability to listen to emotional whispers, and make it an important source of information to understand yourself and others to achieve a goal. If the principal can use this emotional intelligence well, the emotional relationship between the principal and teachers and employees will always be maintained and is expected to improve the performance of subordinates in achieving organizational goals. There are six leadership styles based on emotional intelligence mentioned by Goleman, i.e. visionary , mentor, affiliative, democratic, speed determinant, and authoritarian leadership styles. However, the principle should apply this styles of leadership proportionaly.
