This paper presents the modeling of sand ridge deposits located in the coastal region of the Sepetiba bay, at the Itaguaí County, State of Rio de Janeiro, based on a geophysical survey using ground penetration radar (GPR) and electric sounding (VES). Until the present there is no detail regional mapping discussing the origin of these deposits. The purpose of the study is the subsurface geophysical characterization of the sedimentary deposits to be integrated with a geological model for the whole area. The SEV acquired in sand ridges showed high resistivity at the first geo-electrical layer that correlates to sand deposits. However, the VES acquired between sand ridges showed low resistivity on the same deep correlated to clayey deposits. The GPR data on the sand ridges, showed inclined reflectors indicated progradation of the sediments. Gradix IV and IPI2win were used for processing and interpretation of the data. Results showed coherence with the available information about the local geology, beyond a clear correlation with the hand auger soundings in the area.

This study evaluated the space-time variability of fire foci via environmental satellites for the State of Rio de Janeiro (SRJ) based on statistical procedures. The fire foci in the period of 2000 to 2015 were obtained from the BDQueimadas fire database. Descriptive, exploratory, and multivariate statistical analyses were performed in the software environment R i386 version 3.2.5. The north region had 6760 foci (21.11%), the south-central region had 3020 foci (9.43%), the Middle Paraíba had 6,352 foci (19.84%), the Metropolitan areas had 6671 foci (20.83%), and the Green Coast region had 292 foci (0.91%). The cluster analysis identified three homogeneous groups of fire foci (G1, G2, and G3) but did not include the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes (NA). The G1 group (6.21 ± 0.01 foci, 57.61%) included areas throughout the state and covered the coastal region and lowlands towards the north. The G2 group (6.21 ± 0.01 foci, 34.81%) included the northern, south-central, and coastal shallows regions. The G3 group (6.21 ± 0.01 foci, 9.78%) included the mountain ranges of the state. Environmental characteristics and socioeconomic are crucial in the dynamics of fire foci in Rio de Janeiro.

The sand ridges field in Jiangsu coastal area has been the key region of tidal flat reclamation, waterway regulation and port construction. Adopting the hydrological and sediment data in winter, the tidal patterns were revealed. In addition, the depth-averaged velocity, sediment grain size and sediment concentration in each station were analyzed and compared in detail. The result shows that the tidal in study area is regular semidiurnal and diurnal inequality. The velocity has a decreasing tendency with the Tiaozini water area being centered towards the surrounding areas. The grain size gradually decreases and then increases from north to south, while the sediment concentration gradually increases and then decreases from north to south.

Sand ridge landform is a kind of typical coastal natural landform in Chaoshan area. Through data review, historical satellite image collection, field interviews, archives search and other methods, the relevant data of the sand ridge landform area were collected, and comparative research methods were used to analyze the influence of such terrain on the Traditional settlement mode. A types of settlement patterns is summarized: the evolutionary pattern of settlements which are built on high ground and spread out to sea and that are adapted to the development of sand ridges landform. Through this case study, we hope to have a better understanding of the characteristics of the Chaoshan traditional settlements.

Considering the need for increased productivity, consequently providing a safe source of quality food and economic sustenance for numerous families, fishing in the State of Rio de Janeiro is configured in an important way, and with a primarily artisanal and professional nature of small bearing. In addition to the fundamental aspect of human subsistence, fishing is an important economic activity, generating several other businesses and income for other economic sectors, such as transport, storage, processing and sale of products, construction and repair of vessels, and construction of artifacts and utensils, among others. Thus, the study of potentialities and vulnerabilities involving the strengths and weaknesses of the coastal region of Rio de Janeiro will assist in actions in favor of a broad development of activity in the coastal municipalities. For this, the analytic hierarchy process was used, a multicriteria analysis method, to construct hierarchies of these municipalities in terms of potential development, and thus the analysis of the environment was performed using a matrix to analyze the scenarios. The results point out that due to the importance accorded by the interviewees to the economic sub-index, the municipality of Angra dos Reis stood out in the order of priority of defining the municipality with the highest socioeconomic and productive potentiality index for fishing activity, presenting quantitative data related to sub-indices of greater importance than the other municipalities. However, when the analysis for each subscript was carried out separately, Angra dos Reis has the lowest classification for vulnerability to environmental and social issues.

Abstract. We have compiled a relatively extensive catalogue of geomagnetic declination measurements performed by the Portuguese Bento Sanches Dorta in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) between 1781 and 1788. All the information was retrieved from printed documents compiled in the first three volumes of the Memories of the Portuguese Royal Academy of Sciences. During this period Sanches Dorta performed roughly 20000 individual observations, however, only a fraction of this data is presently available. In this work, all available information about these measurements is analysed. The annual change (variability and trend) and the daily cycle of geomagnetic declination at monthly scale are discussed. Keywords. Geomagnetism and paleomagnetism, History of geophysics, Geomagnetic field declination

The Dongsha Shoal is one of the largest shoals in the South Yellow Sea and has important marine ecological value. The shoal extends in a south–north direction and is controlled by the regional dominating tidal currents. Recently, due to human activities and some natural factors, the geomorphic dynamics of the Dongsha Shoal has undergone drastic changes. However, few people have proposed quantitative research on the changes of tidal flat morphology, let alone the long-term sequence analysis of sand ridge lines. Hence, we attempt to take the Dongsha Shoal in the Radial Sand Ridges as the research area, and analyze the trends of the long-term morphological evolution of the sand ridge lines over the period 1973–2016 based on a high-density time series of medium-resolution satellite images. The sand ridge line generally moves from southeast to northwest, and the position distribution of the sand ridge line from north to south has gradually changed from compact to scattered. We also found that the geomorphological dynamics at different positions of the sand ridge line are inconsistent. The north and south wings are eroded on the west side, while the central area is eroded on the east side. Most of the sand ridge line is moving eastward. In addition, the change of sand ridge line is affected by multiple factors such as sediment supply, typhoon, reclamation and laver cultivation.

The radial sand ridges consist of more than 70 sand ridges that are spread out radially on the continental shelf of the South Yellow Sea. As a unique geomorphological feature in the world, its evolution process and characteristics are crucial to marine resource management and ecological protection. Based on the multi-source remote sensing image data from 1979 to 2019, three types of geomorphic feature lines, artificial coastlines, waterlines, and sand ridge lines were extracted. Using the GIS sequence analysis method (Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), spatial overlay analysis, standard deviational ellipse method), the evolution characteristics of the shoreline, exposed tidal flats, and underwater sand ridges from land to sea were interpreted. The results demonstrate that: (1) The coastline has been advancing towards the sea with a maximum advance rate of 348.76 m/a from Wanggang estuary to Xiaoyangkou Port. (2) The exposed tidal flats have decreased by 1484 km2 including the reclaimed area of 1414 km2 and showed a trend of erosion in the north around Xiyang channel and deposition in the southeast around the Gaoni and Jiangjiasha areas. (3) The overall sand ridge lines showed a trend of gradually moving southeast (135°), and the moving distance is nearly 4 km in the past 40 years. In particular, the sand ridge of Tiaozini has moved 11 km southward, while distances of 8 km for Liangyuesha and 5 km for Lengjiasha were also observed. For the first time, this study quantified the overall migration trend of the RSRs. The imbalance of the regional tidal wave system may be one of the main factors leading to the overall southeastward shift of the radiation sandbanks.

This paper presents unexpectedly early dates for a Tupiguarani settlement in Southeastern Brazil. One radiocarbon dating of 1740 ± 90 yr BP (1820-1390 cal yr BP) was already available for the Morro Grande site (Araruama, southeastern coast of Rio de Janeiro State). Two new dates, obtained from charcoal samples, are reported here. An age of 2920 ± 70 yr BP (3220-2790 cal yr BP) was obtained from a specialized hearth, probably used for cooking ceramics; a funerary hearth at the same archaeological locus was dated at 2600 ± 160 yr BP (3000-2150 cal yr BP). Both measurements were made independently, indifferent laboratories, arguing for their validity. These results considerably age the arrival time of Tupiguarani populations to the coastal region of Southeastern Brazil. They may have important implications to the hypotheses about the origin and dispersion of these populations from Amazonia, supporting the claim of recent authors who consider that their expansion must have begun well before 2000 yrs BP.
