<p>The angel fish Pterophyllum scalare is one of the main species of ornamental interest and widely exploited in Colombia for export. <strong>Objective</strong>. To evaluate the influence on growth and survival of juvenile P. scalare veil variety fed with Enchytraeus buchholzi. <strong>Materials and methods</strong>. Ten juveniles per fish tank were randomly distributed among nine fish tanks and then treated with three different diets (D1, D2 and D3): commercial feed containing 45% of crude protein (CP) (D1); commercial feed containing 45% of CP + E. buchholzi with 11.6% of CP (D2) and E. buchholzi alone with 11.6% of CP (D3). Animals were fed during 28 days and final weight (FW), final standard length (FSL), weight gain (WG), gain in standard length (GSL), specific growth rate (SGR), and survival were measured. <strong>Results</strong>. Significant differences were observed (p &lt;0.05) for the variables FW and FSL. Individuals fed with diet D2 showed higher FW and FSL than those fed with diet D1. The best growth performance was in overall obtained with D2 and were not significantly different (p &gt;0.05) to those observed in juveniles fed with D3. <strong>Conclusions</strong>. Based upon our results, we recommend E. buchholzi to be used as a supplement to the artificial diet instead of a diet on its own. The adequate proportion in the diet must be known for its optimal use.</p><p><strong>Key words</strong>: growth, live food, angelfish, survival.</p>

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were immune response, specific growth rate and survival rate of shrimp vaname (Litopenaeus vannamei) in ponds. The research method used was experimental to know the effect of feed use and added crude protein Zoothamnium penaei on vaname shrimp (Lithopenaeus vannamei) in pond. The sample used is shrimp vaname (Lithopenaeus vannamei) as much as 10,000 heads of juvenile stadia. The food used is commercial feed added crude protein Zoothamnium penaei with a dose of 150 μl / head, which is given 7 times every 7 days interval from the age of 1 day up to Shrimp aged 56 days in ponds. The results showed that there was an increase of immune response (increase of THC and DHC) due to feeding added by Zoothamnium penaei crude. The highest total of Haemocytes (THC) occurred in commercial-fed shrimp and added crude protein ie 56,58 x 106 cell / ml, And the lowest in shrimp shrimp that is not given its crude protein 23.57 x 106 cells / ml. Similarly, the highest Differential Haemosite Count (DHC) also occurred in shrimps fed commercial and added crude protein, 26.57% aged 60 days in ponds and 14.99% low on shrimp not given 90 day crude protein in ponds . Results of parasite shrimp infestation examination exposed with crude protein showed that the highest Zoothamnium penaei infestation was obtained in shrimp fed with artificial feed and not added crude protein Zoothamnium penaei that is 63,35% in shrimp age 90 days. While the shrimp were given artificial feed and added crude protein Zoothamnium penaei infestation Zoothamnium penaei highest of 14.27% in 90 days old shrimp. The highest specific rate of vaname shrimp growth also occurred in shrimp fed commercial and added crude protein Zoothamnium penaei highest of 53.46% and the lowest 16.15% in shrimps aged 90 days in ponds. The highest shrimp life occurrence occurred in commercial vaname shrimp and added crude protein Zoothamnium penaei age of 90 days which has a higher tendency than shrimp that is not given crude protein that is 72% and 21%. The addition of Zoothamnium crude protein to commercial feed as immunostimulant material may enhance immune response, specific growth and shelf life of 30, 60 and 90 days old shrimp in ponds, so that it can be developed as an immunostimulant material.Keyword: Litopenaeus Vannamei, Zoothamnium penaei, udang vanamei

Nursery evaluation of catla spawn was carried out by feeding three iso-nitrogenous diets (35% protein in raw and cooked form) for a period of 30 days. The three test diets (treatments) in raw form were: T1 - groundnut oil cake (GOC) + rice bran (RB) + vitamin-mineral (V-M) premix; T2 - GOC+RB+fish meal (FM) + V-M premix, T3 - GOC+RB+prawn meal (PM)+V-M premix. The diet groups GT1, GT2 and GT3 respectively were same feed combinations in cooked form. Incorporation of prawn meal as animal protein source led to significantly higher final weight, final length, % weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to diet with and without fish meal incorporation. Whereas, diet containing fish meal improved the fry growth and survival rate only when it was cooked. Cooked diet either with fish or prawn meal incorporation led to better fry growth over the respective non-cooked diets, revealing the advantage of cooking process for better nourishment in catla fry during nursery phase.

<p>This research was conducted to determine natural food substitution time by artificial diet   after salinity acclimatization from 20 ppt until 2 ppt, which can increase survival and growth of (<em>Litopenaeus vannamei</em>) postlarvae during rearing period. Design experiment was completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications of natural food <em>Chironomus</em> sp.  (60% of crude protein) substitution time by artificial diet (40% of crude protein) at day: 1 (A), 7 (B), 14 (C), 21 (D) and full natural food without artificial diet (E) during 28 days rearing period. White shrimp postlarvae and rearing media in this experiment based from best result of earlier research that is PL25 from acclimatization in media 2 ppt with addition of potassium 25 ppm to freshwater media.  The densities of PL25 white shrimp were 20 PLs/50 liters of 2 ppt media. The result of this experiment showed that the use of artificial diet as soon as after salinity acclimatization (PL25) gave best performance production compared to which only that was given natural food <em>Chironomus</em> sp. during experiment or with treatment by artificial diet substitution at day-7, day-14 or day-21, shown with the highest value of food consumption level, protein retention, energy retention, daily growth rate and food efficiency. Survival rate of PL54 was above 80% and not significant different between treatment. That is supported by chemical-physical value of water quality still in range appropriate to survival rate of white shrimp post larvae during a rearing period. The result of this experiment indicated that requirement nutrient of PL25 in low salinity did not fulfilled if only rely on natural food, so that require artificial diet with nutrition content to support growth and survival rate of white shrimp post larvae more maximal.</p> <p>Key words: salinity, natural food, artificial diet, Pacific white shrimp</p> <p> </p> <p>ABSTRAK</p> <p>Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan waktu penggantian pakan alami oleh pakan buatan yang tepat selama masa pemeliharaan postlarva udang vaname di media bersalinitas rendah setelah melalui masa aklimatisasi penurunan salinitas dari 20 ppt hingga 2 ppt, sehingga dapat meningkatkan pertumbuhan dan kelangsungan hidup.

AbstractThe growth, gut ecology and immunocompetence of Oreochromis niloticus and the resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila were investigated after been fed with diets containing dietary Curcumin longa for 12 weeks. Diets were formulated to contain 30% crude protein with diet TC1, TC2, TC3, TC4 and TC5 having 0% (control), 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1.0% turmeric powder, respectively. Diets were allotted to groups of O. niloticus (mean weight of 1.29± 0.15 g) and replicated thrice for 84 days. Results showed that the highest mean final weight (4.79±0.04 g) was obtained in TC3 and corresponded to the treatment with the highest feed intake. A significantly high (p<0.05) specific growth rate (SGR) was observed in TC3 (0.73±0.03 %day−1) while TC4 (0.57±0.02 %day−1) gave the lowest value. The highest microbial load in the gut was observed in TC1 groups and the least in TC4 groups. Red blood cell count, hemoglobin, packed cell volume did not show significant variation (p>0.05) across treatments. However, white blood cell (WBC) count was significantly higher in TC1 (control). There was an improved immunocompetence, as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) progressively reduces in fish fed supplements. Similarly, there was a better oxidative response in the treated groups with reduced hydrogen peroxidase, increased total protein and glutathione peroxidase. Mortality ranged from 25% in TC4 to 95% in TC1 after the challenge test with A. hydrophila. This study showed that C. longa inclusion at 0.5% is more beneficial when growth and health status of O. niloticus juveniles are considered.

Background: Currently, ornamental fish are an important element of the pisciculture in our country, with Angelfish(Pterophyllum scalare), being one of the most popular and desired cultured species in the fishkeeping field, given its beauty, majesty and stylized form. However, few authors have studied their nutritional requirements in terms of lipid and protein levels. Objective: This research evaluated six diets, formed by the combination of two levels of crude fat (CF) 9 and 11% and three levels of crude protein (CP) 32, 34 and 36%, to determine its effect on productive performance and the survival of juvenile angelfish (P. scalare). Methodology: 324 juveniles of P. scalare with average weight of 753.5 ± 0.14 mg were randomized in 18 aquariums with volume of 105L, a density of 18 fish/aquarium and fed to 6% of the biomass. Results: We found that a 32% level of crude protein in the diet did not affect the survival, but affected the productive performance (p <0.05), and that levels of 34 or 36% of CP improve it. It was also evidenced that there was no statistical difference (P> 0.05) between the two levels (9 and 11%) of the crude fat used in the diets. Conclusion: It is concluded that diets for juveniles of this species, containing 32% PB can affect the productive performance in terms of low weight gain, high feed conversion and low specific growth rates and protein efficiency.KEYWORDS:Fishkeeping, ornamen- tal fish, nutritional requirement, specific growth rate, protein efficiency rate

The objective of this study was evaluate the influence of feeding bullfrog tadpoles on commercial feed containing 28% crude protein (CP), on their digestive enzyme performance and activities. The experiment lasted 60 days, at the density of one tadpole/L in boxes containing 30 L water. A hundred and twenty tadpoles at the 25 Gosner stage averaging weight and length was 0.046 g and 6.22 mm, respectively, were used. Survival rate, length, final weight, weight gain, feed consumption, apparent food conversion, specific growth rate and activities of chime, amylase, lipase and trypisin were the parameters evaluated, biweekly, in five biometries. Quadratic effect was observed for the length and the weight. There was larger growth of the tadpoles from the 15th to the 45th day (19.82 mm). On the 15th day, the tadpoles presented the largest specific growth rate (16.93%/day), and the largest weight gain (5.460 g), feed intake (14.099 g) and the best apparent food conversion (2.46) was from the 45th to the 60th day. The specific activity of amylase was 205 times greater at 60 days when compared to the beginning of the experiment. The results demonstrated that, for the three enzymes studied, the action capacity over the tadpole chime increased significantly after the 30th experimental day. Moreover, they suggested a greater capacity of tadpoles to digest carbohydrates in detriment to proteins, and this fact was accentuated in the initial phase of the exogenous feeding of this amphibian. The commercial feed with 28% CP provide good performance in the bullfrog tadpoles, indicating the juvenile formation within commercial bullfrog farming standards.

The effects of environmental salinity on physiological responses, growth, and survival of the Gulf corvina, C. othonopterus, were evaluated in a 6-week completely randomized design experiment. Corvina (17.2±2.3 g mean initial body weight) were subjected to salinities of 5, 15, 25, and 35 ‰ and fed a commercial feed with protein and lipid contents of 46 and 14 %, respectively. Plasma osmolality increased significantly with salinity, ranging from 335.1±5.3 mOsm/kg in fish maintained at 5 ‰, to 354.8±6.8 mOsm/kg in fish kept in seawater, while a significant inverse relationship was observed between salinity and moisture content of whole fish, ranging from 73.8±0.7 (measured at 5 ‰) to 76.9±1.0 % (measured at 35 ‰). In spite of this, growth indices (final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, condition factor, survival) were not altered, suggesting that, like other members of the family Sciaenidae, the Gulf corvina is a strong osmoregulator. The isosmotic point for this species was estimated to correspond to a salinity of 9.8 ‰. The present study represents the first set of experimental data on salinity tolerance of C. othonopterus and confirms the euryhalinity of this species.
