A Solution for the Temperature Distribution in a Pipe Wall Subjected to Internally Stratified Flow

Stratified flow in a pipe is a phenomenon in which two distinct fluids flow simultaneously through a pipe with little or no mixing. Under certain conditions the flow stratification will result in a dramatic temperature variation within the pipe wall. This paper presents a solution for the temperature distribution in a pipe wall subjected to internally stratified flow by solving Laplace’s equation in cylindrical coordinates using a finite Fourier cosine transform. The top and bottom sections are treated separately and coupled by boundary conditions at the interface. A one-dimensional approximation for the temperature distribution in the pipe at the interface is developed to uncouple the top and bottom sections, thereby avoiding the necessity for simultaneous solution of two partial differential equations. Results from the solution for a case study of a particular physical situation were compared to the solution obtained using the ANSYS finite element computer program. The solution agreed with the finite element solution to within approximately 2.4 percent throughout the pipe wall and was within 0.4 percent for most of the pipe.

Wildfires have always been a threat to forests and areas of high combustible vegetation. When they are not kept under control, they can spread to residential areas, creating severe damage and destruction. This paper examines the effects of the extreme heat conditions that developed during a wildfire on buildings as a function of their construction type. One of the deadliest wildfires in Greece (July 2018) is considered as a case study, and the damage that occurred to buildings during this event is presented. The temperature of the various structural subsystems in extreme heat conditions was estimated using the finite element method. Parameters that influenced the corresponding temperature distribution were identified. Simple guidelines are given to prevent or reduce damage in buildings exposed to wildfires.

With the development of tunneling technology and the increase of transportation, the mobiles are discharging more and more heat into the tunnel nowadays, which will cause the temperature enhancement. In this paper, general method of calculating the heat discharge is studied, and temperature distribution in the tunnels, which use different ventilation systems, is studied according to the one-dimensional steady state theory. One tunnel is taken for example to calculate the temperature distribution. The result can b e used in the relevant design and research.

Abstract It is a challenging task in the design of automobile tires to predict lifetime and performance on the basis of numerical simulations. Several factors have to be taken into account to correctly estimate the aging behavior. This paper focuses on oxygen reaction processes which, apart from mechanical and thermal aspects, effect the tire durability. The material parameters needed to describe the temperature-dependent oxygen diffusion and reaction processes are derived by means of the time–temperature–superposition principle from modulus profiling tests. These experiments are designed to examine the diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) effect which occurs when accelerated aging tests are performed. For the cord-reinforced rubber composites, homogenization techniques are adopted to obtain effective material parameters (diffusivities and reaction constants). The selection and arrangement of rubber components influence the temperature distribution and the oxygen penetration depth which impact tire durability. The goal of this paper is to establish a finite element analysis based criterion to predict lifetime with respect to oxidative aging. The finite element analysis is carried out in three stages. First the heat generation rate distribution is calculated using a viscoelastic material model. Then the temperature distribution can be determined. In the third step we evaluate the oxygen distribution or rather the oxygen consumption rate, which is a measure for the tire lifetime. Thus, the aging behavior of different kinds of tires can be compared. Numerical examples show how diffusivities, reaction coefficients, and temperature influence the durability of different tire parts. It is found that due to the DLO effect, some interior parts may age slower even if the temperature is increased.

Current maintenance intervals of mechanical systems are scheduled a priori based on the life of the system, resulting in expensive maintenance scheduling, and often undermining the safety of passengers. Going forward, the actual usage of a vehicle will be used to predict stresses in its structure, and therefore, to define a specific maintenance scheduling. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can be used to map a reduced set of data coming from real-time measurements of a structure into a detailed/high-fidelity finite element analysis (FEA) model of the same system. As a result, the FEA-based ML approach will directly estimate the stress distribution over the entire system during operations, thus improving the ability to define ad-hoc, safe, and efficient maintenance procedures. The paper initially presents a review of the current state-of-the-art of ML methods applied to finite elements. A surrogate finite element approach based on ML algorithms is also proposed to estimate the time-varying response of a one-dimensional beam. Several ML regression models, such as decision trees and artificial neural networks, have been developed, and their performance is compared for direct estimation of the stress distribution over a beam structure. The surrogate finite element models based on ML algorithms are able to estimate the response of the beam accurately, with artificial neural networks providing more accurate results.

Within large turboalternators, the excessive local temperatures and spatially distributed temperature differences can accelerate the deterioration of electrical insulation as well as lead to deformation of components, which may cause major machine malfunctions. In order to homogenise the stator axial temperature distribution whilst reducing the maximum stator temperature, this paper presents a novel non-uniform radial ventilation ducts design methodology. To reduce the huge computational costs resulting from the large-scale model, the stator is decomposed into several single ventilation duct subsystems (SVDSs) along the axial direction, with each SVDS connected in series with the medium of the air gap flow rate. The calculation of electromagnetic and thermal performances within SVDS are completed by finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), respectively. To improve the optimization efficiency, the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) model is employed to approximate the finite element analysis, while the novel isometric sampling method (ISM) is designed to trade off the cost and accuracy of the process. It is found that the proposed methodology can provide optimal design schemes of SVDS with uniform axial temperature distribution, and the needed computation cost is markedly reduced. Finally, results based on a 15 MW turboalternator show that the peak temperature can be reduced by 7.3 ∘C (6.4%). The proposed methodology can be applied for the design and optimisation of electromagnetic-thermal coupling of other electrical machines with long axial dimensions.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) matrix composite overwrap repair systems have been introduced and accepted as an alternative repair system for steel pipeline. This paper aimed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of damaged steel pipeline with CFRP repair using finite element (FE) analysis. Two different repair strategies, namely wrap repair and patch repair, were considered. The mechanical responses of pipeline with the composite repair system under the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) was analyzed using the validated FE models. The design parameters of the CFRP repair system were analyzed, including patch/wrap size and thickness, defect size, interface bonding, and the material properties of the infill material. The results show that both the stress in the pipe wall and CFRP could be reduced by using a thicker CFRP. With the increase in patch size in the hoop direction, the maximum von Mises stress in the pipe wall generally decreased as the maximum hoop stress in the CFRP increased. The reinforcement of the CFRP repair system could be enhanced by using infill material with a higher elastic modulus. The CFRP patch tended to cause higher interface shear stress than CFRP wrap, but the shear stress could be reduced by using a thicker CFRP. Compared with the fully bonded condition, the frictional interface causes a decrease in hoop stress in the CFRP but an increase in von Mises stress in the steel. The study results indicate the feasibility of composite repair for damaged steel pipeline.

Abstract. The stability of man-made underground cavities in soft rocks interacting with overlying structures and infrastructures represents a challenging problem to be faced. Based upon the results of a large number of parametric two-dimensional (2-D) finite-element analyses of ideal cases of underground cavities, accounting for the variability both cave geometrical features and rock mechanical properties, specific charts have been recently proposed in the literature to assess at a preliminary stage the stability of the cavities. The purpose of the present paper is to validate the efficacy of the stability charts through the application to several case studies of underground cavities, considering both quarries collapsed in the past and quarries still stable. The stability graphs proposed by Perrotti et al. (2018) can be useful to evaluate, in a preliminary way, a safety margin for cavities that have not reached failure and to detect indications of predisposition to local or general instability phenomena. Alternatively, for sinkholes that already occurred, the graphs may be useful in identifying the conditions that led to the collapse, highlighting the importance of some structural elements (as pillars and internal walls) on the overall stability of the quarry system.
