This paper studies the influence of macrogeometry and material type of spur gears on their torque capacity, reliability, and acquisition cost. The developed model indicates how costly it is to enhance the torque capacity or the reliability of gears. The results are in agreement with the catalog prices of a manufacturer in a wide size range and different modules. The model provides a simple cost estimation tool for multi-objective gear design and optimization.

Abstract This paper presents the use of constraint management techniques to design spur and helical gears. The constraints for gear design are presented in a declarative manner such that they can be incorporated in a general Design Shell environment. A declarative representation allows the designer to experiment with a number of different designs and perform “what-if” scenarios. Since spur gears form a subset of helical gears, the mathematical formulation is presented for helical gears only. The analysis of helical gears is based on the AGMA/ANSI Standard 2001-B88.

Combining the use of scanning electron microscopy and microcinematography with functional and behavioural observations has clarified many aspects underlying the feeding processes of the small planktonic sergestid shrimp Acetes sibogae australis. In captivity Acetes sibogae australis is an opportunistic feeder that uses four principal feeding modes to capture a wide size range of prey: Artemia nauplii (<0.33 mm), copepods (<1mm) and moribund Acetes (up to 25 mm). Prey capture is effected by combined actions of the first three pairs of pereiopods and the third maxillipeds before transfer to the more dorsal second maxillipeds. The second maxillipeds are the principal appendages used in securing, manipulating, sorting and rejecting prey before insertion into the vicinity of the inner mouthparts.

A design method for the geometric shape and modification of asymmetric spur gear was proposed, in which the geometric shape and modification of the gear can be obtained directly according to the rack-cutter profile. In the geometric design process of the gear, a rack-cutter with different pressure angles and fillet radius in the driving side and coast side was selected, and the generated asymmetric spur gear profiles also had different pressure angles and fillets accordingly. In the modification design of the gear, the pressure angle modification of rack-cutter was conducted firstly and then the corresponding modified involute gear profile was obtained. The geometric model of spur gears was developed using computer-aided design, and the meshing process was analyzed using finite element simulation method. Furthermore, the transmission error and load sharing ratio of unmodified and modified asymmetric spur gears were investigated. Research results showed that the proposed gear design method was feasible and desired spur gear can be obtained through one time rapid machining by the method. Asymmetric spur gear with better transmission characteristic can be obtained via involute modification.

ABSTRACTWe have developed a new cluster ion source that can generate intense beams of metal and semiconductor clusters of a very wide-size range. With the source, we have observed intense beams of carbon clusters with mean cluster sizes of up to 4000 atoms/clusters. However, we have found that for generating small fullerenes, such as C60 and C70, the recently discovered technique by Kraetschmer et al. is much more efficient. By improving the technique, we have generated gram quantities of C60 and C70 and systematically investigated their thermal desorption properties. During the heating process, we have discovered that at high temperatures the bulk fullerenes, fullerite, transformed to another form of carbon, which still evaporates at temperatures above 700 C, but does not dissolve in benzene.

The Tooth Impact Factor was defined and introduced into the formula of forming load of closed-upsetting. Thus the formula for calculating the forming load of hot precision forging of cylindrical gears was put forward. The equation for the Tooth Impact Factor was fitted using the data from FE simulation of forging process in which gears with different modules were forged. Some forging tests for gears were conducted and the forming load was measured to ensure the validity of the formula. The tests also revealed that the formula is suitable for forming load calculation of hot precision forging of both spur and helical gears in a wide size range.

This may cause problems to electrical machines if, within a wide size range, the required per-unit values of certain reactances are more or less fixed. After having touched the transformer situation, two electrical machine solutions will be discussed: partial compartmentization of winding; interdependence of frequency and pole number.

ABSTRACT The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is a permeable sieve that can dilate to facilitate the bidirectional translocation of a wide size range of receptor-cargo complexes. The binding of receptors to FG nucleoporin docking sites triggers channel gating by an unknown mechanism. Previously, we used deoxyglucose and chilling treatments to implicate Nup170p and Nup188p in the control of NPC sieving in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we report that aliphatic alcohols increase the permeability of wild-type and nup170Δ NPCs. In conjunction with increases in permeability, aliphatic alcohols, deoxyglucose, and chilling trigger the reversible dissociation of several nucleoporins from nup170Δ NPCs. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that NPC gating occurs when molecular latches composed of FG repeats and structural nucleoporins dissociate.
