The present paper deals with oil droplet now phenomena in aero engine bearing chambers. An experimental investigation of droplet sizes and velocities utilizing a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) has been performed for the first time in bearing chamber atmospheres under real engine conditions. Influences of high rotational speeds are discussed for individual droplet size classes. Although this is an important contribution to a better understanding of the droplet flow impact on secondary air/oil system performance, an analysis of the droplet flow behaviour requires an incorporation of numerical methods because detailed measurements as performed here suffer from both strong spatial limitations with respect to the optical accessibility in real engine applications and constraints due to the extremely time consuming nature of an experimental flow field analysis. Therefore, further analysis is based on numerical methods. Droplets characterized within the experiments are exposed to the flow field of the gaseous phase predicted by use of our well-known CFD code EPOS. The droplet trajectories and velocities are calculated within a Lagrangian frame of reference by forward numerical integration of the particle momentum equation. This paper has been initiated rather to show a successful method of bearing chamber droplet flow analysis by a combination of droplet sizing techniques and numerical approaches than to present field values as a function of all operating parameters. However, a first insight into the complex droplet flow phenomena is given and specific problems in bearing chamber heat transfer are related to the droplet flow.

The constant development of aero engines towards lighter but yet more compact designs, without decreasing their efficiency, has led to gradually increased demands of the lubrication systems, such as the bearing chambers of the aero engine. For this reason, it is of particular importance to increase our level of understanding of the flow field inside the bearing chambers in order to optimize its design and performance. The flow field in such cases is of a complicated nature since there is a strong interaction between air-flow and lubricant oil together with the geometrical configurations and the shaft rotational speed inside the bearing chamber. The behavior of this interaction must be investigated in order to understand the flow field development inside the aero engine bearing and, at a next step, optimize its performance in relation to the lubrication and heat transfer capabilities. Such an effort is presented in this work where an investigation of the air-flow field development inside the front bearing chamber of an aero engine is attempted. The front bearing chamber is divided in two separate smaller sections where the flow passes from the first section partially through the bearing and the holding structure, to the second one where the vent and the scavenge are placed. The investigation was performed with the combined use of experimental measurements and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. The experimental measurements were carried out with the use of a Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) system in an experimental rig modeling the front bearing chamber of an aero engine for real operating conditions taking into account both air-flow and lubricant oil-flow and for a varying number of shaft rotating speeds. The CFD modeling was performed with the use of a commercial CFD package. The air-flow inside the bearing was modeled with the adoption of a porous medium assumption. The experimental measurements and the CFD computations presented similar flow patterns and satisfactory quantitative agreement. At the same time the effect of the important parameters such as the air and oil mass flow together with the shaft rotation speed and the effect of the chamber inside geometry were identified. These conclusions can be exploited in future attempts in combination with the developed CFD model, in order to optimize the efficiency of the lubricant and cooling system. The latter forms the main target of this work which is the development of a useful engineering tool capable of predicting the flow field inside the aero engine bearing so as to be used for optimization efforts.

In order to improve the inadequacy of the current research on oil droplet size distribution in aero-engine bearing chamber, the influence of oil droplet size distribution with the oil droplets coalescence and breakup is analyzed by using the computational fluid dynamics-population balance model (CFD-PBM). The Euler–Euler equation and population balance equation are solved in Fluent software. The distribution of the gas phase velocity field and the volume fraction of different oil droplet diameter at different time are obtained in the bearing chamber. Then, the influence of different initial oil droplet diameter, air, and oil mass flow on oil droplet size distribution is discussed. The result of numerical analysis is compared with the experiment in the literature to verify the feasibility and validity. The main results provide the following conclusions. At the initial stage, the coalescence of oil droplets plays a dominant role. Then, the breakup of larger diameter oil droplet appears. Finally, the oil droplet size distribution tends to be stable. The coalescence and breakup of oil droplet increases with the initial diameter of oil droplet and the air mass flow increasing, and the oil droplet size distribution changes significantly. With the oil mass flow increasing, the coalescence and breakup of oil droplet has little change and the variation of oil droplet size distribution is not obvious.

In this paper, the 3D flow analysis model of gasoline engine turbocharger compressor was built by using the software NUMECA. The flow fields of the vaneless diffuser and volute, such as airflow velocity field, temperature field, pressure field and the entropy field were simulated. The internal flow performance of the vaneless diffuser and volute were analyzed. The simulation results show that the field changes accord with the compressor characteristics, thus the vaneless diffuser and volute of the compressor design is reasonable. The approach of numerical simulation and flow field analysis by using CFD method can accurately predict the compressor performance. The research methods and conclusions provide theoretical and practical reference for the optimization design of the compressor.

Due to the increasing fuel cost and environmental targets, the demand for more efficient gas turbines has risen considerably in the last decade. One of the most important systems in a gas turbine is the secondary air system, which provides cooling air to the disks and to the blades. It also provides air for sealing of the bearing chambers. The amount of secondary air that is extracted from the compressor is a performance penalty for the engine. In aero engines, bearing chambers are in most cases sealed by the most traditional type of seal, the labyrinth seal. Bearing chambers contain the oil lubricated components like bearings and gears. In order to avoid oil migration from the bearing chamber into the turbomachinery, the seals are pressurized by secondary air; thus, a pressure difference is setup across the seal, which retains the lubricant into the bearing chamber. Oil loss can lead to a number of problems like oil fire or coking with the probability of an uncontained destruction of the aero engine. Oil fumes can also cause contamination of the air conditioning system of the aircraft thus cause discomfort to the passengers. Beside labyrinth seals, other types of seals such as brush seals and carbon seals are used. Both the latter are contact type seals, that is, they may be installed with zero gap and lift during operation when they get pressurized. Brush seals particularly may be installed having an overlap with the rotating part. An original aero engine bearing chamber was modified by MTU Aero Engines to run with brush seals in a simulating rig in Munich. Two types of brush seals were used for testing: (a) a brush seal with bristles made of Kevlar fibers and (b) a brush seal with bristles made of steel. Both types were installed with an overlap to the rotor. The targets set were twofold: (a) to measure the transient temperatures in the rotor and particularly in the contact zone between the bristles and the rotor and (b) to calculate the heat generation by the seals which could enable predictions of the heat generation in future applications (i.e., scaling to bigger rotor diameters). For the heat transfer calculations, numerical models using ansys cfx were created. Additionally, a coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) approach was applied to simulate flow and bristle's behavior. In order to obtain the transient temperature measurements with high fidelity, a new pyrometric technique was developed and was applied for the first time in brush seals as reported by Flouros et al. (2013, “Transient Temperature Measurements in the Contact Zone Between Brush Seals of Kevlar and Metallic Type for Bearing Chamber Sealing Using a Pyrometric Technique,” ASME J. Gas Turbines Power, 135(8), p. 081603) and Flouros et al. (2012, “Transient Temperature Measurements in the Contact Zone Between Brush Seals of Kevlar and Metallic Type for Bearing Chamber Sealing Using a Pyrometric Technique,” ASME Turbo Expo 2012, Copenhagen, Paper No. GT2012-68354). This technique has enabled positioning of the pyrometer (SensorthermGmbH, www.sensortherm.com) into the bristles pack of the seal adjacent to the rotating surface. The pyrometer could record the frictional temperature evolution in the bristles/rotor contact zone during accelerations or decelerations of the rotor. The sealing air demand can be reduced up to 97% with brush seals compared to traditional three fin labyrinth. It has been estimated that this can result in a reduction in fuel burned up to 1%. Further, the reduction in air flow has additional potential benefits such as a possible simplification of the bearing chamber architecture (vent less chamber). Even though the rotor was accelerated up to 19,500 rpm, the temperature induced overshoots in the seal/rotor contact zone have caused no deterioration in either the materials or the oil.

This flow-field analysis is thus being done using a turbulence model solution to take into the effects of a real-time environment where the vortices from the canard are captured more accurately. The analysis has been done meticulously and made to be as error-free as possible under the guidance of Dr. Yagya Dutta Dwivedi.

The rotating components in gas turbines are very highly stressed as a result of the centrifugal and thermal loads. One of the main functions of the secondary air system (SAS) is to ensure that the rotating components are surrounded by air that optimizes disc lifing and integrity. The SAS is also responsible for the blade cooling flow supply, preventing hot gas ingestion from the main annulus into the rotor-stator cavities, and for balancing the net axial load in the thrust bearings. Thus, the SAS design requires a multidisciplinary compromise to provide the above functions, while minimizing the penalty of the secondary flows on engine performance. The phenomenon known as rotor-stator drag or windage is defined as the power of the rotor moment acting on its environment. The power loss due to windage has a direct impact on the performance of the turbine and the overall efficiency of the engine. This paper describes a novel preliminary design approach to calculate the windage of the rotor-stator cavities in the front of a typical aero engine HP turbine. The new method is applied to investigate the impact of the SAS design parameters on the windage losses and on the properties of the cooling flows leading to the main annulus. Initially, a theoretical approach is followed to calculate the power losses of each part of the HPT front air feed system. Then, a 1D-network integral model of the cavities and flow passages of the HPT front is built and enhanced with detailed flow field correlations. The new 1D-flow network model offers higher fidelity regarding local effects. A result comparison between the theoretical calculation and the prediction of the enhanced flow network model puts forward the relevance of the local flow field effects in the design concept of the SAS. Using the enhanced 1D-flow network models, the SAS design parameters are varied to assess their influence on the windage and pumping power calculation. As a conclusion, the paper shows how the SAS design can have a significant influence on the HPT overall power and the air that is fed back into the turbine blade rows. Controlling these features is essential to bid a competitive technology in the aero engine industry.

In the paper the effect of negative pre-swirl on the performance and the flow in a centrifugal compressor stage are investigated by both the experimental and numerical methods. The results show that, at a negative pre-swirl, whether the pressure ratio of compressor is increased or not is determined by the contest between the increased energy transfer and flow losses. At a large negative pre-swirl, the flow losses in the IGV and the impeller are increased obviously, which makes the pressure ratio and efficiency reduced dramatically. The further flow analysis show that, the enhanced separation area in the IGV and the depravation of the inlet flow condition of the impeller are the main sources of the losses, while there is almost no influence of the pre-swirl on the diffuser losses. Additionally, at a large negative pre-swirl there exist vortexes shedding from the separation region at impeller leading edge, which causes severe excited force on the impeller leading edge.

For this reason, it is of particular importance to increase the level of understanding of the flow field inside the bearing chamber in order to optimize its design and improve its performance. The flow field inside a bearing chamber is complicated since there is a strong interaction between the sealing air-flow and the flow of lubrication oil, and both of them are affected by and interacting with the geometry of the chamber and the rotating shaft. In order to understand the flow field development and, as a next step, to optimize the aero engine bearing chamber performance, in relation to the lubrication and heat transfer capabilities, the behavior of this interaction must be investigated. In this work, an investigation of the air-flow field development inside the front bearing chamber of an aero engine is attempted. The front bearing chamber is divided into two separate sections. The flow from the first section passes through the bearing and the bearing holding structure to the second one where the vent and the scavenging system are located. The investigation was performed with the combined use of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The experimental measurements were carried out using a laser Doppler anemometry system in an experimental rig, which consists of a 1:1 model of the front bearing chamber of an aero engine. Tests were carried out at real operating conditions both for the air-flow and for the lubricant oil-flow and for a range of shaft rotating speeds. The CFD modeling was performed using a commercial CFD package. Particularly, the air-flow through the bearing itself was modeled, adopting a porous medium technique, the parameters of which were developed in conjunction with the experiments. A satisfactory quantitative agreement between the experimental measurements and the CFD computations was achieved. At the same time, the effect of the important parameters such as the air and oil mass flow, together with the shaft rotational speed, and the effect of the chamber geometry were identified. The conclusions can be exploited in future attempts in combination with the CFD model developed in order to optimize the efficiency of the lubrication and cooling system. The latter forms the main target of this work, which is the development of a useful engineering tool capable of predicting the flow field inside the aero engine bearing, which can be used subsequently for optimization purposes.
