Mini centrifugal pumps having a diameter smaller than 100mm are employed in many fields; automobile radiator pump, ventricular assist pump, cooling pump for electric devices and so on. Further, the needs for mini centrifugal pumps would become larger with the increase of the application of it for electrical machines. It is desirable that the mini centrifugal pump design be as simple as possible as precise manufacturing is required. But the design method for the mini centrifugal pump is not established because the internal flow condition for these small-sized fluid machines is not clarified and conventional theory is not suitable for small-sized pumps. Therefore, we started research on the mini centrifugal pump for the purpose of development of high performance mini centrifugal pumps with simple structure. Three types of rotors with different outlet angles are prepared for an experiment The performance tests are conducted with these rotors in order to investigate the effect of the outlet angle on performance and internal flow condition of mini centrifugal pumps. In addition to that, the blade thickness is changed because blockage effect in the mini centrifugal pump becomes relatively larger than that of conventional pumps. On the other hand, a three dimensional steady numerical flow analysis is conducted with the commercial code (ANSYS-Fluent) to investigate the internal flow condition. It is clarified from the experimental results that head of the mini centrifugal pump increases according to the increase of the blade outlet angle and the decrease of the blade thickness. In the present paper, the performance of the mini centrifugal pump is shown and the internal flow condition is clarified with the results of the experiment and the numerical flow analysis. Furthermore, the effects of the blade outlet angle and the blade thickness on the performance are investigated and the internal flow of each type of rotor is clarified by the numerical analysis results.

The recent advances in centrifugal pump design do not only require a better suction performance but also there have been attempts to reduce design time at a lower cost. The traditional trial-and-error optimization design method, however, depends on the designer's experience, which requires longer cycles. This is because the computational process of calculating the net positive suction head required (NPSHr) involves several calculation steps and this consumes a lot of computational time. An investigation was therefore carried out to test a novel NPSHr prediction method in a double-suction centrifugal pump using unsteady numerical simulations. In the new approach, a new boundary pair was introduced and an algorithm was used to estimate a good value for a static pressure value that correlates to a 3% drop in pump head to determine the critical cavitation point. Experiments were conducted to validate the hydraulic performance and the cavitation model. The NPSHr and the characteristic “sudden” head-drop were very well predicted by the novel approach in only three simulation steps. The internal flow analysis showed that for 0.6 Q d, the flow around the volute tongue was uneven at NPSH = 10.06 m, inducing flow separation and recirculation at the tongue region. Attached cavities were also observed around the suction ring in the spiral suction domain. The pressure fluctuations were analyzed also and the dominant frequency at the pump outlet and tongue region was the blade passing frequency. Consequently, the novel approach proved very robust and efficient in NPSHr prediction and would be a good alternative to shorten simulation time during cavitation optimization design process in centrifugal pumps.

Small hydropower generation is one of important alternative energy, and potential of small hydropower is great. Efficiency of small hydroturbines is lower than that of large one, and these small hydroturbine’s common problems are out of operation by foreign materials. Then, there are demands for small hydroturbines to keep high performance and wide flow passage. Therefore, we adopted contra-rotating rotors, which can be expected to achieve high performance and enable to use low-solidity rotors with wide flow passage, in order to accomplish high performance and stable operation. Final goal of this study is development of a small hydroturbine like electrical goods, which has high portability and makes an effective use of unused small hydro power energy source. Efficiency of the contra-rotating small hydroturbine was high in pico-hydroturbine and high efficiency could be kept in wide flow rate range. On the other hand, the relatively large loss occurred at the spokes which should be installed for this small hydroturbine to support the rotors. Then, the new spoke to increase its performance is proposed in this research. Internal flow condition, which was difficult to measure experimentally, was shown by the numerical flow analysis. Further, the influence of spoke geometry was clarified. Then, a relation between the performance and internal flow condition was considered by the numerical analysis results. In the present paper, the performance of the contra-rotating small hydroturbine using different spoke geometry is shown by the numerical results. Further, internal flow condition between the front and rear rotors are investigated.

AbstractCavitation is a phenomenon that occurs easily during rotation of fluid machinery and can decrease the performance of a pump, thereby resulting in damage to flow passage components. To study the influence of wall roughness on the cavitation performance of a centrifugal pump, a three-dimensional model of internal flow field of a centrifugal pump was constructed and a numerical simulation of cavitation in the flow field was conducted with ANSYS CFX software based on the Reynolds normalization group k-epsilon turbulence model and Zwart cavitation model. The cavitation can be further divided into four stages: cavitation inception, cavitation development, critical cavitation, and fracture cavitation. Influencing laws of wall roughness of the blade surface on the cavitation performance of a centrifugal pump were analyzed. Research results demonstrate that in the design process of centrifugal pumps, decreasing the wall roughness appropriately during the cavitation development and critical cavitation is important to effectively improve the cavitation performance of pumps. Moreover, a number of nucleation sites on the blade surface increase with the increase in wall roughness, thereby expanding the low-pressure area of the blade. Research conclusions can provide theoretical references to improve cavitation performance and optimize the structural design of the pump.

The strong noise generated during the operation of the centrifugal pump harms the pump group and people. In order to decrease the noise of the centrifugal pump, a specific speed of 117.3 of the centrifugal pump is chosen as a research object. The bionic modification of centrifugal pump blades is carried out to explore the influence of different bionic structures on the noise reduction performance of centrifugal pumps. The internal flow field and internal sound field of bionic blades are studied by numerical calculation and test methods. The test is carried out on a closed pump test platform which includes external characteristics and a flow noise test system. The effects of two different bionic structures on the external characteristics, acoustic amplitude–frequency characteristics and flow field structure of a centrifugal pump, are analyzed. The results show that the pit structure has little influence on the external characteristic parameters, while the sawtooth structure has a relatively great influence. The noise reduction effect of the pit structure is aimed at the wide-band noise, while the sawtooth structure is aimed at the discrete noise of the blade-passing frequency (BPF) and its frequency doubling. The noise reduction ability of the sawtooth structure is not suitable for high-frequency bands.

Marine centrifugal pumps are mostly used on board ship, for transferring liquid from one point to another. Based on the combination of orthogonal testing and numerical simulation, this paper optimizes the structure of a drainage trough for a typical low-specific speed centrifugal pump, determines the priority of the various geometric factors of the drainage trough on the pump performance, and obtains the optimal impeller drainage trough scheme. The influence of drainage tank structure on the internal flow of a low-specific speed centrifugal pump is also analyzed. First, based on the experimental validation of the initial model, it is determined that the numerical simulation method used in this paper is highly accurate in predicting the performance of low-specific speed centrifugal pumps. Secondly, based on the three factors and four levels of the impeller drainage trough in the orthogonal test, the orthogonal test plan is determined and the orthogonal test results are analyzed. This work found that slit diameter and slit width have a large impact on the performance of low-specific speed centrifugal pumps, while long and short vane lap lengths have less impact. Finally, we compared the internal flow distribution between the initial model and the optimized model, and found that the slit structure could effectively reduce the pressure difference between the suction side and the pressure side of the blade. By weakening the large-scale vortex in the flow path and reducing the hydraulic losses, the drainage trough impellers obtained based on orthogonal tests can significantly improve the hydraulic efficiency of low-specific speed centrifugal pumps.

The backflow vortexes at the suction connection in high-speed centrifugal pumps have negative effect on the flow field. Setting an orifice plate in front of the inducer is able to decrease the negative effect caused by backflow vortexes. The traditional plate is able to partially control the backflow vortexes, but a small part of the vortex is still in the inlet and the inducer. Four new types of orifice plates were created, and the control effects on backflow vortexes were analyzed. The ANSYS-CFX software was used to numerically simulate a high-speed centrifugal pump. The variations of streamline and velocity vectors at the suction connection were analyzed. Meanwhile, the effects of these plates on the impeller pressure and the internal flow field of the inducer were analyzed. Numerically, simulation and experimental data analysis methods were used to compare the head and efficiency of the high-speed pumps. The results show that the C-type orifice plate can improve the backflow vortex, reduce the low-pressure area, and improve the hydraulic performance of the high-speed pump.

A tandem arrangement of double rotating cascades and single diffuser cascade, proposed as a centrifugal pump with high performance in air-water two-phase flow condition, yields lower head due to the smallness of the impeller outlet in comparison with a impeller with large outlet diameter and no diffuser. Influences of impeller diameter change and installation of diffuser blades on two-phase flow performance were experimentally investigated under the case of the same volute casing. As the result, the similarity law of the diameter of impeller having the similar blade geometry and the rotational speed is satisfied even in two-phase flow condition. Comparing pump performances between a large impeller without diffuser blades and a small one with diffuser blades, higher two-phase flow performance is obtained by controlling the rotational speed of a small impeller with diffuser blades in the range of small water flow rates, while a large impeller with no diffuser gives high performance in the range of high water flow rate and small air flow rate.
