A Survey of Positive Engagement, Continuously Variable Transmissions

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of transmission that allows an infinitely variable ratio change within a finite range, allowing the engine to continuously operate in an efficient or high performance range. A brief history of CVT’s is presented, including the families under which they can be categorized. A new family of CVT’s, with the classification of positive engagement, is presented. Three different published embodiments of CVT’s of the positive engagement type are presented describing a meshing problem that exists apparently regardless of the embodiment in this family. The problem is called the non-integer tooth problem and its occurrences are detailed in each of the three embodiments. Specific solutions to the problem, as embodied in each case, are presented. Two additional embodiments of the positive engagement type are also presented for comparison. These last embodiments rely on less efficient methods of power transmission but are not subject to the non-integer tooth problem.

In recent years the increasing demand for fuel efficient and less pollutant vehicles has stimulated the development of hybrid and electric vehicles. These vehicle platforms often incorporate drivetrains which utilize multiple power sources for vehicle propulsion to increase fuel mileage and reduce emissions. Understanding the torque and RPM relationship within the power transmission device used to combine power sources is fundamental to overcoming the design challenges associated with hybrid/electric vehicle platforms. Results from this research include the fundamental torque and RPM relationships that exist in a multiple-input, single-output power transmission device. Results were deduced from a test incorporating two separate power inputs into a mechanical differential, which produced a single output. Testing showed that a mechanical differential has the ability to function as an infinitely variable transmission (IVT). Additionally, recommendations for overcoming some of the challenges associated with using a mechanical differential as a multiple-input, single-output device were identified.

The correct work of a power transmission system for the sake of a car motion properties, fuel consumption and pollution emission, requires proper control of an engine and power transmission system. This problem becomes especially significant in the case of automation of the power transmission system and particularly regarding the system of constant gear ratio change between the engine and drive wheels (Continuously Variable Transmission), examined in the paper. This control is based on friction degree conditions estimation between metal belt and the transmission wheels. This paper also describes the experimental results of bench test and road test and applying of different control strategies.

Paper concerned the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The comparison of the engine’s work conditions with conventional manual transmission and CVT’s is presented. Also, a short historical track is included. Furthermore, a production data with the forecast is presented for different parts of the World. Various current solutions of continuous ratio change are mentioned with the more detailed description of the most popular design used in passenger cars. Technological challenges and possibilities of further transmission improvement are included.

The history of the systematics of isopod suborders is summarised. Several authors have suggested that the traditional suborder Flabellifera is paraphyletic and includes one or more of the suborders Gnathiidea, Epicaridea and Anthuridea. Two suborders, Cymothoida and Sphaeromatidea, have been proposed as replacement taxa for the Flabellifera, but it has not been possible on the basis of phylogenetic analyses to elucidate significant relationships between the suborders and families. Morphological characters are used to explore relationships between 35 genus-, family- and suborder-level taxa of flabelliferan Isopoda in a cladistic analysis (using Phreatoicidea and Asellota as outgroups) and to derive a new classification. The analysis did not find a synapomorphy for 'Flabellifera' sensu lato, but recognises two diverging clades of 'long-tailed' isopods. Members of the Oniscidea are not part of either clade. Nor are the Tainisopidea, a new suborder erected for members of the family Tainisopidae. The Tainisopidea has many synapomorphies and plesiomorphic features, but does not share characters with either clade. The first clade comprises Phoratopidea (for Phoratopus remex) and sister-taxa Cymothoida and Limnoriidea. Representatives of these suborders have uropodal rami ventral to the pleotelson and articulating from side-to-side inside the branchial space. The new suborder, Phoratopidea, is for one species with unique, broad articles of pereopods 3 and 4 with reduced dactyls. It lacks the synapomorphies of the following two suborders. In members of the suborder Cymothoida, the mandibular molar is either a flat triangular blade, reduced to a conical process, or absent, and the maxillipedal endite is rarely longer than palp article 1 (or is absent), distally tapering and has few setae. The suborder Limnoriidea is diagnosed as lacking the mandibular molar, and the non-tapering, slender (except in Keuphylia) maxillipedal endite reaches to at least the distal margin of palp article 4. Members of the second clade share a vaulted pleotelson enclosing a branchial chamber defined by ventrolateral ridges and uropods lateral to the pleotelson margin that fold down alongside the branchial space. It comprises two suborders. Members of the Sphaeromatidea have pleonite 1 much narrower than pleonite 2 and a reduced (or absent) right lacinia mobilis fused to the spine row. They lack operculiform uropods, which characterise Valvifera. The suborder Anthuridea is reduced to superfamily rank and Epicaridea is reduced to two superfamilies within Cymothoida. Unambiguous relationships between most families are resolved, but Sphaeromatidae is suspected to be paraphyletic, Paravireia is placed as the most plesiomorphic of the Sphaeromatoidea and a new family, Basserolidae, is proposed. The Tainisopidea includes freshwater taxa in a relictual environment. The sole species of Phoratopidea is marine, rare, and its ecology is unknown. The Cymothoida are most diverse in tropical regions. Members of the most plesiomorphic family, the Cirolanidae, are mobile predators or scavengers and the more derived families are ectoparasites on fishes and other crustaceans. Members of the Limnoriidea are mainly tropical and at least one family is herbivorous. The Valvifera and Sphaeromatidea are benthic, with respiratory pleopods in a branchial chamber. They are most diverse in the temperate southern hemisphere, and most are detritivores.

The review considers the first attempt in the history of Russian economic thought to give a detailed analysis of informal institutions (IF). It recognizes that in general it was successful: the reader gets acquainted with the original classification of institutions (including informal ones) and their genesis. According to the reviewer the best achievement of the author is his interdisciplinary approach to the study of problems and, moreover, his bias on the achievements of social psychology because the model of human behavior in the economic mainstream is rather primitive. The book makes evident that namely this model limits the ability of economists to analyze IF. The reviewer also shares the author’s position that in the analysis of the IF genesis the economists should highlight the uncertainty and reject economic determinism. Further discussion of IF is hardly possible without referring to this book.

Subject. The article addresses the history of development and provides the criticism of existing criteria for aggregate social welfare (on the simple exchange economy (the Edgeworth box) case). Objectives. The purpose is to develop a unique classification of criteria to assess the aggregate social welfare. Methods. The study draws on methods of logical and mathematical analysis. Results. The paper considers strong, strict and weak versions of the Pareto, Kaldor, Hicks, Scitovsky, and Samuelson criteria, introduces the notion of equivalence and constructs orderings by Pareto, Kaldor, Hicks, Scitovsky, and Samuelson. The Pareto and Samuelson's criteria are transitive, however, not complete. The Kaldor, Hicks, Scitovsky citeria are not transitive in the general case. Conclusions. The lack of an ideal social welfare criterion is the consequence of the Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem, and of the group of impossibility theorems in economics. It is necessary to develop new approaches to the assessment of aggregate welfare.

The two-dimensional(2D) materials are highly promising candidates to realise elegant and e cient transistor. In the present letter, we conjecture a novel co-planar metal-insulator-semiconductor(MIS) device(capacitor) completely based on lateral 2D materials architecture and perform numerical study of the capacitor with a particular emphasis on its di erences with the conventional 3D MIS electrostatics. The space-charge density features a long charge-tail extending into the bulk of the semiconductor as opposed to the rapid decay in 3D capacitor. Equivalently, total space-charge and semiconductor capacitance densities are atleast an order of magnitude more in 2D semiconductor. In contrast to the bulk capacitor, expansion of maximum depletion width in 2D semiconductor is observed with increasing doping concentration due to lower electrostatic screening. The heuristic approach of performance analysis(2D vs 3D) for digital-logic transistor suggest higher ON-OFF current ratio in the long-channel limit even without third dimension and considerable room to maximise the performance of short-channel transistor. The present results could potentially trigger the exploration of new family of co-planar at transistors that could play a signi significant role in the future low-power and/or high performance electronics.<br>

The article covers the issues of initiative acquisition of archives in the documents of personal origin during the Great Patriotic War, the organization of work to identify and collect the wartime documents. Collecting documents of ordinary citizens, in particular letters from the front and to the front is analyzed. Proposals to create the specialized archives of documents on the history of the war were never implemented. Quite a lot of the actions, search operations and expeditions were conducted in the country, for example, the “Chronicle of the Great Patriotic War”, the “Frontline letter”, the “Search”, the “Memory”, etc., during which a significant number of documents of war participants and home front workers were collected and stored. Not so much of the documents of personal origin of the war participants are concentrated in the archives. In general, there prevails the collection type of organization for storing documents from the period of the Great Patriotic War. With reference to the corpus of documents of personal origin of the war period the research literature pays its attention mostly to correspondence and diaries, memoirs. Historians and archivists, analyzing wartime letters, offer different classifications depending on the authors, recipients, subjects, etc. The article provides a generalized classification of letters based on their inherent similarities. The author also analyzes the reasons for a small number of extant diaries and memoirs, and provides examples of their classification. Likewise the article describes current approaches to the collection of personal papers within the frames of the Moscow Glavarkhiv project “Moscow – with care for history” and the Ministry of Defense project “The Memory Road”.

Date of «birth» of phytosociology (phytocenology) is considered to be 1910, when at the third International Botanical Congress in Brussels adopted the definition of plant association in the wording Including Flaó and K. Schröter (Flahault, Schröter, 1910; Alexandrov, 1969). The centenary of this momentous event in the history of phytocenology devoted to the 46th edition of the Yearbook «Braun-Blanquetia», which began to emerge in 1984 in Camerino (Italy) and it has a task to publish large geobotanical works. During the years of the publication of the Yearbook on its pages were published twice work of the Russian scientists — «The steppes of Mongolia» (Z. V. Karamysheva, V. N. Khramtsov. Vol. 17. 1995), and «Classification of continental hemiboreal forests of Northern Asia» (N. B. Ermakov in collaboration with English colleagues and J. Dring, J. Rodwell. Vol. 28. 2000).
