Advanced robotics requires a new generation of actuators able to exhibit a number of desirable characteristics ranging from high power density and high efficiency, high positioning resolution, high torque capacity and torsional stiffness, lightweight designs and low-cost packages. In this paper, we present the development and the experimental evaluation of a new actuator, aimed at improving the torque density and mechanical efficiency of actuated robotic joints, and enhancing the portability and effectiveness of robotic systems engaged in biomechanical applications such as rehabilitation robots and wearable exoskeletons. The new actuator, called the Gear Bearing Drive (GBD), consists of a two-stage planetary gear arrangement coupled through the planets and driven by an external rotor brushless motor that is inscribed within the input stage sun gear. This planetary configuration enables for incredible high-speed reductions and allows for embedding the motor directly within the gearbox saving significant space on the actuator length. Our initial experimental prototypes have demonstrated impressive performance with the potential to deliver more than 30Nm of continuous torque with 85% mechanical efficiency and 0.0005 degree of backlash, and up to 200 rpm maximum output speed in a highly compact and robust package.

Iron loss will be rapidly increased when the permanent magnet iron core synchronous motor runs at a high speed, which makes the motor produce so much heat that causes low efficiency of the motor and even burns out the motor. The iron-core-free permanent magnet synchronous motor remedies this defect and has a high efficiency at high speed. This article makes a comparative analysis on the iron-core-free permanent magnet synchronous motor torque density with different slot engagement classifications. The paper puts forward an optimized model of permanent magnet synchronous motor without the iron core. The technology of the permanent magnet synchronous motor without iron core is studied based on this model which provides a method to design and manufacture the iron-core-free permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Since the urgent demands for high-speed broadband Internet, facilities originally installed in a unit-central office end are moved to the places close to the users in order to enhance the broadband and overcome the high-frequency attenuation of copper cables, such as cross connecting cabinets (CCC) on streets, and the lines between a unit-central office and CCC are changed to optical fiber cables. Network transmission technology has currently become the generation of optical fiber. To actually promote fiber to the home, the value-added services of high-speed Internet access, VoIP, and multimedia service for users are currently the highlighted telecommunications technology and businesses. Nevertheless, copper cables have been used for a long period of time that it would be costly to completely replace copper cables. Gradually replacing old cables with new ones is considered as the optimal strategy. Without constructing optical fiber lines at different places or completely removing copper cables, Automatic Handshaking Signal Module (AHSM) for a CCC developed in this study is considered economical and simple. It could monitor the signal handshaking through remote control and make structural and functional changes of existing copper-cable cross connecting cabinets for the low-cost and high-efficiency seamless technology transfer.

We present a low-cost, low-power, high efficiency, and portable integrated implementations of a lab-on-chip for magnetic molecular level sensing manipulation, and diagnosis. The design features an all-integrated programmable magnetic coil array for sensing and actuating small magnetic bead objects. The coil array is selectively and dynamically controlled using the smallest permissible vertical coil inductors in this technology. Each cell, composed of the coil and its logical control circuitry, can detect small objects in the order of 1 μm diameter as well as emit eight programmable magnetic field levels for manipulation. All array sensing and driving components are shared to reduce the overall imprint. They are tuned towards the 900 s MHz ISM band and incorporating high-speed serial row/column switching up to 40 MHz for seamless pseudo-parallel operation.

Train-induced vibrations will undoubtedly influence the stability of slopes near railway lines. To monitor the effects of such vibrations on slope stability, a wirelessly networked vibration test system was established, which included wirelessly networked vibration meters, high-precision and high-speed three-dimensional sensors and a remote wirelessly networked data server system. This system represents the first attempt to monitor the effects of train-induced vibrations on the stability of slopes in China. It enables real-time and long-distance monitoring by means of remote transmission with a low cost and high efficiency. The duration, frequency, amplitude, peak acceleration and peak particle velocity were adopted as measures for evaluating the influence of train vibrations. Simultaneously, we used additional monitoring technologies to verify the conclusions of the wirelessly networked vibration test system. The monitoring results indicated that the peak particle velocity was much higher near the track and gradually decreased with increasing distance. When the distance between the measurement point and the road axis was 12 m ( H = 0 m), the maximal peak particle velocity was 0.4 mm/s, which remained below the maximum safe value.

Cell lysis is a process of breaking cell membranes to release intracellular substances such as DNA, RNA, protein, or organelles from a cell. The detection of DNA, RNA, or protein from the lysed cells is of importance for cancer diagnostics and drug screening. In this study, we develop a microbubble array that enables the realization of multiple cell lysis induced by the shear stress resulting from the individual oscillating microbubbles. The oscillating microbubbles in the channel have similar vibration amplitudes, and the intracellular substances can be released from the individual cells efficiently. Moreover, the efficiency of cell lysis increases with increments of input voltage and sonication time. By means of DNA agarose-gel electrophoresis, a sufficient extraction amount of DNA released from the lysed cells can be detected, and there is no significant difference in lysis efficiency when compared to cell lysis achieved using commercial kits. With the advantages of the simple manufacturing process, low cost, high efficiency, and high speed, this device can serve as an efficient and versatile tool for the single-cell sequencing of cell biology research, disease diagnosis, and stem cell therapy.

Abstract Active meta polarizers based on phase-change materials have recently led to emerging developments in terahertz devices and systems for imaging, security, and high-speed communications. Existing technologies of adaptive control of meta polarizers are limited to the complexity of external stimuli. Here, we introduce an active terahertz polarizer consisting of a single layer of large array patterns of vanadium dioxide material integrated with metallic patch matrix to dynamically reconfigure the polarization of the terahertz waves. The proposed active polarizer is simple in structure and can independently manipulate the polarization of the incident THz waves in two orthogonal directions. In addition, the device can also be performing as a highly efficient reflector at the same frequencies. We demonstrate that efficient and fast polarization changes of THz waves can be achieved over a wide operating bandwidth. Compared with other active polarizers using mechanical, optical and thermal controls, it can be conveniently manipulated with DC bias without any external actuators, intense laser source or heater. Therefore, with the advantages of high efficiency, compact size, low loss, low cost and fast response, the proposed polarizer can be highly integrative and practical to operate within adaptive terahertz circuits and systems.

Single Phase Switched Reluctance Motor is more popular in many industrial purposes for high speed applications because of its robust and rugged construction. For low cost and variable speed drive applications SRM are widely used.Due to doubly salient structure of motor, the torque pulsations are high when compared to other sinusoidal machines. The major drawback in using SRM drive is torque pulsations and increased number of switching components. In order to overcome these drawbacks, a bridgeless Single Ended Primary Inductor Converter (SEPIC) is proposed. The major advantages of this converter are continuous output current, smaller voltage ripple and reduced semiconductor current stress when compared to the conventional SEPIC converter. The ripple free input current is obtained by using additional winding of input inductor and auxiliary capacitors. To achieve high efficiency, active power factor correction circuits (PFC) are employed to precise the power factor. Further, the unity power factor can be obtained by making the input current during switching period proportional to the input voltage is proposed. The proposed system consists of reduced components and it is also capable of reducing the conduction losses. The working principles and the waveforms of proposed converter are analyzed. To analyze the circuit operation, theoretical analysis and simulation results are provided. Finally, the comparison between the waveforms of conventional SEPIC and proposed system is presented by using MATLAB/Simulink tools.
