Modelling the Wall Collision of Regular Non-Spherical Particles and Experimental Validation

The importance of numerical calculations (CFD) for supporting the optimization and lay-out of industrial processes involving multiphase flows is continuously increasing. Numerous processes in powder technology involve wall-bounded gas-solid flows where wall collisions essentially affect the process performance. In modelling the particle wall-collision process in the frame of numerical computations the general assumption is that the particles are spherical. However, in most practical situations one is dealing with irregular non-spherical particles or particles with a certain shape, such as granulates or fibers. In the case of non-spherical particle-wall collisions in confined flows, additional parameters such as roughness, particle shape and orientation play an important role and may strongly affect the transport behavior. The change of linear and angular velocity of the particle depends on these parameters, specifically the orientation and the radius of impact of the particles. In order to improve the non-spherical particle-wall understanding and modeling, in this work regular non-spherical particle-wall collisions in three dimensions are studied experimentally and computationally. For that purpose, cylindrical particles impacting a smooth wall at different angles are used. Single particle motion is tracked in space solving for both the translational and the rotational motion whereby the orientation of the non-spherical particle is obtained through the Euler angles and the Euler parameters. Once the particle touches the wall, the change of translational and angular velocity is determined by the non-spherical particle wall collision model. Experiments are made by shooting cylindrical non-spherical particles against a smooth plane wall at various impact angles and velocities. The collision event is recorded by two perpendicular arranged high-speed cameras. The experimental velocities obtained are used for validating the model.

The results of a theoretical treatment are presented for the slow flow of a viscous fluid through a circular cylinder within which a small spherical particle is confined. The sphere is situated in an arbitrary position within the cylinder, rotates with an arbitrary constant angular velocity and moves at constant velocity parallel to the wall. Approximate expressions are presented which give the frictional force, torque, and permanent pressure drop caused by the presence of this obstacle in the original Poiseuillian field of flow.An eccentricity function for the torque on a sphere in a circular cylinder was evaluated numerically. It can be used to predict the wall-effect for the torque as well as the angular velocity with which a ‘dense’ spherical particle will rotate. Expressions are presented which predict the angular velocity of ‘dense’ as well as neutrally buoyant hydrodynamically supported spherical particles.

The ability to image cells in three dimensions has brought about a revolution in biological microscopy, enabling many questions to be asked which would be inaccessible without this capability. There are currently two major methods of three dimensional microscopy: laser-scanning confocal microscopy and widefield-deconvolution microscopy. The method of widefield-deconvolution uses a cooled CCD to acquire images from a standard widefield microscope, and then computationally removes out of focus blur. Using such a scheme, it is easy to acquire time-lapse 3D images of living cells without killing them, and to do so for multiple wavelengths (using computer-controlled filter wheels). Thus, it is now not only feasible, but routine, to perform five dimensional microscopy (three spatial dimensions, plus time, plus wavelength).Widefield-deconvolution has several advantages over confocal microscopy. The two main advantages are high speed of acquisition (because there is no scanning, a single optical section is acquired at a time by using a cooled CCD camera) and the use of low excitation light levels Excitation intensity can be much lower than in a confocal microscope for three reasons: 1) longer exposures can be taken since the entire 512x512 image plane is acquired in parallel, so that dwell time is not an issue, 2) the higher quantum efficiently of a CCD detect over those typically used in confocal microscopy (although this is expected to change due to advances in confocal detector technology), and 3) because no pinhole is used to reject light, a much larger fraction of the emitted light is collected. Thus we can typically acquire images with thousands of photons per pixel using a mercury lamp, instead of a laser, for illumination. The use of low excitation light is critical for living samples, and also reduces bleaching. The high speed of widefield microscopy is also essential for time-lapse 3D microscopy, since one must acquire images quickly enough to resolve interesting events.

This paper investigates the influence of multiple inclusions on the Cauchy stress of a spherical particle-reinforced metal matrix composite (MMC) under uniaxial tensile loading condition. The approach of three-dimensional cubic multi-particle unit cell is used to investigate the 15 non-overlapping identical spherical particles which are randomly distributed in the unit cell. The coordinates of the center of each particle are calculated by using the Random Sequential Adsorption algorithm (RSA) to ensure its periodicity. The models with reinforcement volume fractions of 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% are evaluated by using the finite element method. The behaviour of Cauchy stress for each model is analyzed at a far-field strain of 5%. For each reinforcement volume fraction, four models with different particle spatial distributions are evaluated and averaged to achieve a more accurate result. At the same time, single-particle unit cell and analytical model were developed. The stress-strain curves of multi-particle unit cells are compared with single-particle unit cells and the tangent homogenization model coupled with the Mori-Tanaka method. Only little scatters were found between unit cells with the same particle volume fractions. Multi-particle unit cells predict higher response than single particle unit cells. As the volume fraction of reinforcements increases, the Cauchy stress of MMCs increases.

Fast-start escape performances for two species of threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus spp., were investigated using high-speed cinematography (400 Hz). The two fishes (not yet formally described, referred to here as benthic and limnetic) inhabit different niches within Paxton Lake, British Columbia, Canada, and are recent, morphologically distinct species. All escape responses observed for both species were double-bend C-type fast-starts. There were no significant differences between the species for any linear or angular parameter (pooled averages, both species: duration 0.048 s, distance 0.033 m, maximum velocity 1.10 m s-1, maximum acceleration 137 m s-2, maximum horizontal angular velocity 473.6 rad s-1 and maximum overall angular velocity 511.1 rad s-1). Benthics and limnetics have the greatest added mass (Ma) at 0.3 and 0.6 body lengths, respectively. The maximum Ma does not include the fins for benthics, but for limnetics the dorsal and anal fins contribute greatly to the maximum Ma. The deep, posteriorly placed fins of limnetics enable them to have a fast-start performance equivalent to that of the deeper-bodied benthics. Both the limnetic and benthic fishes have significantly higher escape fast-start velocities than their ancestral form, the anadromous threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, suggesting that the high performance of the Paxton Lake sticklebacks is an evolutionarily derived trait. In this biomechanical study of functional morphology, we demonstrate that similar high fast-start performance can be achieved by different suites of morphological characteristics and suggest that predation might be the selective force for the high escape performance in these two fishes.

Quantitative autoradiography is a powerful method for studying brain function by the determination of blood flow, glucose utilization, or transport of essential nutrients. Autoradiographic images contain vast amounts of potentially useful information, but conventional analyses can practically sample the data at only a small number of points arbitrarily chosen by the experimenter to represent discrete brain structures. To use image data more fully, computer methods for its acquisition, storage, quantitative analysis, and display are required. We have developed a system of computer programs that performs these tasks and has the following features: 1) editing and analysis of single images using interactive graphics, 2) an automatic image alignment algorithm that places images in register with one another using only the mathematical properties of the images themselves, 3) the calculation of mean images from equivalent images in different experimental serial image sets, 4) the calculation of difference images (e.g., experiment-minus-control) with the option to display only differences estimated to be statistically significant, and 5) the display of serial image metabolic maps reconstructed in three dimensions using a high-speed computer graphics system.

The parameterization of rotations is a central topic in many theoretical and applied fields such as rigid body mechanics, multibody dynamics, robotics, spacecraft attitude dynamics, navigation, three-dimensional image processing, and computer graphics. Nowadays, the main alternative to the use of rotation matrices, to represent rotations in ℝ3, is the use of Euler parameters arranged in quaternion form. Whereas the passage from a set of Euler parameters to the corresponding rotation matrix is unique and straightforward, the passage from a rotation matrix to its corresponding Euler parameters has been revealed to be somewhat tricky if numerical aspects are considered. Since the map from quaternions to 3 × 3 rotation matrices is a 2-to-1 covering map, this map cannot be smoothly inverted. As a consequence, it is erroneously assumed that all inversions should necessarily contain singularities that arise in the form of quotients where the divisor can be arbitrarily small. This misconception is herein clarified. This paper reviews the most representative methods available in the literature, including a comparative analysis of their computational costs and error performances. The presented analysis leads to the conclusion that Cayley's factorization, a little-known method used to compute the double quaternion representation of rotations in four dimensions from 4 × 4 rotation matrices, is the most robust method when particularized to three dimensions.

Among optical imaging techniques light sheet fluorescence microscopy stands out as one of the most attractive for capturing high-speed biological dynamics unfolding in three dimensions. The technique is potentially millions of times faster than point-scanning techniques such as two-photon microscopy. However current-generation light sheet microscopes are limited by volume scanning rate and/or camera frame rate. We present speed-optimized Objective Coupled Planar Illumination (OCPI) microscopy, a fast light sheet technique that avoids compromising image quality or photon efficiency. We increase volume scanning rate to 40 Hz for volumes up to 700 µm thick and introduce Multi-Camera Image Sharing (MCIS), a technique to scale imaging rate by parallelizing acquisition across cameras. Finally, we demonstrate fast calcium imaging of the larval zebrafish brain and find a heartbeat-induced artifact that can be removed by filtering when the imaging rate exceeds 15 Hz. These advances extend the reach of fluorescence microscopy for monitoring fast processes in large volumes.

Tracking the coordinated activity of cellular events through volumes of intact tissue is a major challenge in biology that has inspired significant technological innovation. Yet scanless measurement of the high-speed activity of individual neurons across three dimensions in scattering mammalian tissue remains an open problem. Here we develop and validate a computational imaging approach (SWIFT) that integrates high-dimensional, structured statistics with light field microscopy to allow the synchronous acquisition of single-neuron resolution activity throughout intact tissue volumes as fast as a camera can capture images (currently up to 100 Hz at full camera resolution), attaining rates needed to keep pace with emerging fast calcium and voltage sensors. We demonstrate that this large field-of-view, single-snapshot volume acquisition method—which requires only a simple and inexpensive modification to a standard fluorescence microscope—enables scanless capture of coordinated activity patterns throughout mammalian neural volumes. Further, the volumetric nature of SWIFT also allows fast in vivo imaging, motion correction, and cell identification throughout curved subcortical structures like the dorsal hippocampus, where cellular-resolution dynamics spanning hippocampal subfields can be simultaneously observed during a virtual context learning task in a behaving animal. SWIFT’s ability to rapidly and easily record from volumes of many cells across layers opens the door to widespread identification of dynamical motifs and timing dependencies among coordinated cell assemblies during adaptive, modulated, or maladaptive physiological processes in neural systems.

Abstract A new distributed multiplier/fictitious (DLM) domain method is developed for direct simulation of electrorheological (ER) suspensions subjected to spatially uniform electrical fields. The method is implemented both in two and three dimensions. The fluid-particle system is treated implicitly using the combined weak formulation described in [1,2]. The governing Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid are solved everywhere, including the interior of the particles. The flow inside the particles is forced to be a rigid body motion by a distribution of Lagrange multipliers. The electrostatic force acting on the polarized spherical particles is modeled based on the point-dipole approximation. Using our code we have studied the time evolution of particle-scale structures of ER suspensions in channels subjected to the pressure driven flow. In our study, the flow direction is perpendicular to that of the electric field. Simulations show that when the hydrodynamic force is zero, or very small compared to the electrostatic force, the particles form chains that are aligned approximately parallel to the direction of electric field. But, when the magnitude of hydrodynamic force is comparable to that of the electrostatic force the particle chains orient at an angle with the direction of the electric field. The angle between the particle chain and the direction of the electric field depends on the relative strengths of the hydrodynamic and electrostatic forces.

High-speed videography and muscle denervation experiments were used to quantify the feeding kinematics of Hemisus marmoratum and to test hypotheses of muscle function. The feeding behavior of H. marmoratum, which feeds on ants and termites, differs radically from that of other frogs that have been studied. During feeding in H. marmoratum, the tongue 'telescopes' straight out of the mouth, as opposed to the 'flipping' tongue trajectory observed in most other frogs. At the time of prey contact, two lateral lobes of tissue at the tongue tip envelop the prey. These lateral lobes are capable of applying significant pulling forces to the prey and the tongue is, therefore, described as prehensile. The trajectory of the tongue can be adjusted throughout protraction so that the frog can 'aim' its tongue in all three dimensions; distance, azimuth and elevation. Bilateral denervation of the genioglossus muscles results in a complete lack of tongue protraction, indicating that the genioglossus muscle is the main tongue protractor in H. marmoratum, as in other frogs. Thus, H. marmoratum provides strong evidence of functional conservatism of the genioglossus muscle within anurans. Bilateral denervation of the hyoglossus muscle indicates that although the hyoglossus is involved in several aspects of normal tongue retraction, including the prehensile capability of the tongue tip, it is not necessary for tongue retraction. Unilateral denervation of the genioglossus muscle causes significant deviation of the tongue towards the denervated side, providing evidence for a mechanism of lateral tongue aiming. On the basis of the kinematics of prey capture, the anatomy of the tongue and the results of the denervation experiments, we propose that H. marmoratum uses a hydraulic mechanism to protract its tongue.
