CFD Simulation of a Multi-Stage Centrifugal Pump

In this paper, a CFD software package is applied to the performance prediction of a 14-stage centrifugal pump with opposed impeller configuration. In this study, the fluid volumes of the complete multistage pump are simulated together. The CFD model includes not only all the main flow channels from inlet to discharge, but also all the secondary flow passages such as wearing ring leakage and seal flush. The CFD model and the simulation results will be presented and discussed in detail. The CFD prediction will be compared with available experiment data.

In this paper the seat vibration acceleration response was reduced through flow passage modification of the centrifugal pump which could decrease the fluid excitation of the pump. CFD simulation technology was applied to optimize the fluid field of the multi-stage centrifugal pump, and then the velocity, pressure fluctuation and fluid excitation were concerned to investigate the effect of optimization. Finally, the influence of fluid field modification on the seat vibration response was verified experimentally.

Abstract This paper describes how CFD simulations were used to help evaluating a centrifugal pump performance. The simulated pump was designed totally from scratch. Many aspects of pump performance characteristics were predicted based on the geometry generated using a pump design software. Especially the effects of the free spin of the 3rd rotor in a 3 stage pump assembly on overall performance were evaluated. Pump models, simulation techniques, and simulation approaches will be presented in detail. Simulation results will be discussed and compared with available test data.

The article presents results of research on an adjustable check valve. In particular, the article deals with improvement of flow characteristics and reduction in pressure losses of an existing valve design. The subject of the research was the valve body in the form of a steel block intended for mounting a typical cartridge valve insert. Two variants of the valve body were analysed: a standard one, which is currently in production, and the proposed new solution, in which the geometry was modified based on the results of CFD simulations. The main research task was to properly shape and arrange holes and flow channels inside the body, between the cartridge valve and the connecting plate. Using CFD analyses, a solution for minimising the flow resistance was sought and then the method of modifying flow channels geometry was developed. The CFD simulation results showed a significant reduction in pressure loss, up to 40%. The obtained simulation results were verified on a test bench using a prototype of the proposed valve block. A high degree of consistency in the results of CFD simulations and laboratory experiments was achieved. The relative difference between simulation and experimental results in the entire considered range of the flow rate did not exceed 6.0%.

A commercial CFD software was used to simulate and predict a centrifugal pump performance. In this paper,the influences on the numerical simulation results using different turbulence models and different leakage flow assumptions were studied. The simulations are based on RANS with the and SST turbulence models. It is found that SST turbulence is better. Also the influence of the leakage flow was studied.

The structure of the centrifugal pump with splitting blades is complex, and the law of the internal flow is not fully grasped. Therefore Reverse Engineering (RE) and numerical simulations of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are adopted to study the centrifugal pumps with splitter blades. In this process, the law of velocity and pressure distribution of internal flow about the centrifugal pump with splitter blades is preliminary disclosed. In addition, performance prediction was carried out in centrifugal pumps. Comparing to the calculation curve and text characteristic curve, it’s obvious that simulation results are in good agreement with experimental results. The results verify the reliability and feasibility of the research method.

Microbubble generators are of considerable importance to a range of scientific fields from use in aquaculture and engineering to medical applications. This is due to the fact the amount of sea life in the water is proportional to the amount of oxygen in it. In this paper, experimental measurements and computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation are performed for three water flow rates and three with three different air flow rates. The experimental data presented in the paper are used to validate the CFD model. Then, the CFD model is used to study the effect of diverging angle and throat length/throat diameter ratio on the size of the microbubble produced by the Venturi-type microbubble generator. The experimental results showed that increasing water flow rate and reducing the air flow rate produces smaller microbubbles. The prediction from the CFD results indicated that throat length/throat diameter ratio and diffuser divergent angle have a small effect on bubble diameter distribution and average bubble diameter for the range of the throat water velocities used in this study.

The wear-ring abrasion can cause performance degradation of the marine centrifugal pump. In order to study the effect of front and back wear-ring clearance on a pump, test and numerical simulation were used to investigate the performance change of a pump. The test results show that the head and efficiency of pump decrease by 3.56% and 9.62% respectively at 1.0 Qd due to the wear-ring abrasion. Under 1.0 Qd, with the increase of the front wear-ring the vibration velocity at pump foot increases from 0.4 mm/s to 1.0 mm/s. The axis passing frequency (APF) at the measuring points increases significantly and there appears new characteristic frequency of 3APF and 4APF. The numerical simulation results show that the front wear-ring abrasion affects the flow at the inlet of the front chamber of the pump and impeller passage. And the back wear-ring abrasion has obvious effect on the flow in the back chamber of the pump and impeller passage, while the multi-malfunction of the front wear-ring abrasion and back wear-ring abrasion has the most obvious effect on the flow velocity and flow stability inside pump. The pressure pulsation at Blade Passing Frequency (BPF) of the three schemes all decrease with the increase of the clearance.

A theoretical and numerical study is carried out to investigate the transformation of the wave boundary layer from non-depth-limited (wave-like boundary layer) to depth-limited one (current-like boundary layer) over a smooth bottom. A long period of wave motion is not sufficient to induce depth-limited properties, although it has simply been assumed in various situations under long waves, such as tsunami and tidal currents. Four criteria are obtained theoretically for recognizing the inception of the depth-limited condition under waves. To validate the theoretical criteria, numerical simulation results using a turbulence model as well as laboratory experiment data are employed. In addition, typical field situations induced by tidal motion and tsunami are discussed to show the usefulness of the proposed criteria.
