Conjugate Heat Transfer Modelling in Film Cooled Blades

A reliable and accurate prediction of temperature field in hot components plays a key role in design process of modern gas turbines. The first stages of turbine and the combustor basket are usually subjected to high heat transfer rates and hot gas temperatures exceed the melting point of the employed alloys. The accurate knowledge of temperature distribution could extend the life of critical components through an accurate design of coolant systems. The present work concerns the upgrade of the finite volume CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) solver HybFlow, (see Adami et al.[1]) to simulate heat transfer in gas turbine cooling devices. In particular, the conjugate simulation of flow field heat transfer and metal heat conduction has been considered. To this aim, the original solver has been coupled to a routine solving the Fourier equation in solid domain. This modification allows the “conjugate heat transfer” investigation of heat transfer in fluid flow and solid domain simultaneously. The code has been validated through two different test-case applications. The first is a laminar flow over a flat plate, while the second is a film-cooled plate. Finally, a complete 3D film cooled NGV (Nozzle Guide Vane) has been investigated as an example for a more complex application. The simulation couples the thermal field inside the metal and the flow field in the vane, in the two plenum channels and in the six rows of cooling channels as well.

Abstract Augmented backside cooling refers to the enhancement of the backside convection of a combustor liner using extended heat transfer surfaces to fully utilise the cooling air by maximising the heat transfer to pumping ratio characteristic. Although film cooling has and still is widely used in the gas turbine industry, augmented backside cooling has been in development for decades now. The reason for this, is to reduce the amount of air used for liner cooling and to also reduce the emissions caused by using film cooling in the primary zones. In the case of micro gas turbines, emissions are of even greater importance, since the regulations for such engines will most likely become stricter in the following years due to a global effort to reduce emission. Furthermore, the liners investigated in this paper are for a 10 kWe micro turbine, destine for various potential markets, such as combine heat and power for houses, EV hybrids and even small UAVs. The majority of these markets require long service intervals, which in turn requires the combustor liners to be under the least amount of thermal stress possible. The desire to also increase combustor inlet temperatures with the use of recuperated exhaust gases, which in turn increase the overall system efficiency, limits the cooling effectiveness of the inlet air. Due to all these reasons, an advanced form of augmented backside cooling would be of substantial significance in such a system. Currently some very simple designs are used in the form of straight plain fins, transverse strips or other similar geometries, but the creation of high heat transfer efficiency surfaces in such small sizes becomes very difficult with traditional subtractive manufacturing methods. When using additive manufacturing though these types of surfaces are not an issue. This paper covers the comparison of experimental results with conjugate heat transfer CFD models and empirical heat balance models for two different AM liner cooling geometries and an AM blank liner. The two cooling fin geometries include a rotating plain fin and an offset strip fin. The liners were tested in an AM built reverse flow radial swirl stabilised combustion chamber at a variety of operating conditions. During the experiments the surfaces were compared using a thermal camera to record the outer liner temperature which was viewed through a quartz outer casing. The experimental results showed that the cooling surfaces were effective at reducing the liner temperatures with minimal pressure losses for multiple operating points. Those results were then compared against the conjugate heat transfer CFD models and the empirical calculations used to design the surfaces initially. From this comparison, it was noticed both the CFD and empirical calculations under predicted the wall temperatures. This is thought to be due to inaccuracies in the predicted flame temperatures and the assumed emissivity values used to calibrate the thermal imaging camera. Further uncertainties arise from the assumption of a constant air and hot gas temperature and mass flow along the cooling surfaces and the lack of data for the surface roughness of the parts.

In this study, the characteristic of the swirling flow was analyzed in detail in terms of flow field by means of a visualization experiment using matched refractive index PIV measurement to evaluate the applicability of the swirling flow generated downstream of a three-dimensionally connected dual elbow to the divertor cooling. The dual elbow used in the experiment comprises two 90-degree elbows with the same curvature connected directly in three-dimensional configuration. From the experiment, it was found that strong swirling velocity component appears locally near the pipe wall downstream of the second elbow. Moreover, although the strength of the swirling flow changed gradually as it flowed downstream, it attenuated little even 8D downstream of the dual elbow, where D was the diameter of the piping. Therefore, this swirling flow is expected to survive for a considerable distance downstream of the elbow, and the applicability of this flow field to divertor cooling can be promising. Furthermore turbulence quantities such as Reynolds stress were analyzed in terms of heat transfer performance. Since there were some regions where larger Reynolds stress than a developed turbulent pipe flow was observed near the pipe wall, high heat transfer is expected there.

As an indirect noise source generated in the combustion chamber, entropy waves are widely prevalent in modern gas turbines and aero-engines. In the present work, the influence of entropy waves on the downstream flow field of a turbine guide vane is investigated. The work is mainly based on a well-known experimental configuration called LS89. Two different turbulence models are used in the simulations which are the standard k-ω model and the scale-adaptive simulation (SAS) model. In order to handle the potential transition issue, Menter’s ð-Reθ transition model is coupled with both models. The baseline cases are first simulated with the two different turbulence models without any incoming perturbation. Then one forced case with an entropy wave train set at the turbine inlet at a given frequency and amplitude is simulated. Results show that the downstream maximum Mach number is rising from 0.98 to 1.16, because the entropy waves increase the local temperature of the flow field; also, the torque of the vane varies as the entropy waves go through, the magnitude of the oscillation is 7% of the unforced case. For the wall (both suction and pressure side of the vane) heat transfer, the entropy waves make the maximum heat transfer coefficient nearly twice as the large at the leading edge, while the minimum heat transfer coefficient stays at a low level. As for the averaged normalized heat transfer coefficient, a maximum difference of 30% appears between the baseline case and the forced case. Besides, during the transmission process of entropy waves, the local pressure fluctuates with the wake vortex shedding. The oscillation magnitude of the pressure wave at the throat is found to be enhanced due to the inlet entropy wave by applying the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method. Moreover, the transmission coefficient of the entropy waves, and the reflection and transmission coefficients of acoustic waves are calculated.

An increased demand for lower emission of stationary gas turbines as well as civil aircraft engines has led to new, low emission combustor designs with less liner cooling and a flattened temperature profile at the outlet. As a consequence, the heat load on the endwall of the first nozzle guide vane is increased. The secondary flow field dominates the endwall heat transfer, which also contributes to aerodynamic losses. A promising approach to reduce these losses is non-axisymmetric endwall contouring. The effects of non-axisymmetric endwall contouring on heat transfer and film cooling are yet to be investigated. Therefore, a new cascade test rig has been set up in order to investigate endwall heat transfer and film cooling on both a flat and a non-axisymmetric contoured endwall. Aerodynamic measurements that have been made prior to the upcoming heat transfer investigation are shown. Periodicity and detailed vane Mach number distributions ranging from 0 to 50% span together with the static pressure distribution on the endwall give detailed information about the aerodynamic behavior and influence of the endwall contouring. The aerodynamic study is backed by an oil paint study, which reveals qualitative information on the effect of the contouring on the endwall flow field. Results show that the contouring has a pronounced effect on vane and endwall pressure distribution and on the endwall flow field. The local increase and decrease of velocity and the reduced blade loading towards the endwall is the expected behavior of the 3d contouring. So are the results of the oil paint visualization, which show a strong change of flow field in the leading edge region as well as that the contouring delays the horse shoe vortex hitting the suction side.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of the heat transfer inside a micro gas turbine and its impact on the performance. The large temperature difference between turbine and compressor in combination with the small dimensions results in a high heat transfer causing a drop in efficiency of both components. Present study aims to quantify this heat transfer and to reveal the different mechanisms that contribute to it. A conjugate heat transfer solver has been developed for this purpose. It combines a three-dimensional (3D) conduction calculation inside the rotor and the stator with a 3D flow calculation in the radial compressor, turbine and gap between stator and rotor. The results for micro gas turbines of different size and shape and different material characteristics are presented and the impact on performance is evaluated.

Due to the importance of the problems of implementing energy-saving technologies in modern conditions, one of the promising areas is the use of gas turbines for combined heat and power generation. One of the areas of effective development and technical re-equipment is the widespread use of highly economical combined steam and gas plants and gas turbines. The operation of the gas turbine unit “Aquarius” SE NPCG “Zorya-Mashproekt” with the injection of steam into the combustion chamber, which operates on the advanced cycle A-STIG and has in its circuit equipment for water regeneration, condensed from a vapor-gas mixture is considered. For condensation of steam from the vapor-gas mixture, a contact condenser-gas cooler is used, which is a mixing heat exchanger of complex design. The efficiency of heat transfer is determined by the design of the nozzle, namely, the developed heat transfer surface, small hydraulic supports, high heat transfer coefficients. An important aspect is the overall dimensions, which must be within certain limits. In the work it is offered to execute a design of the condenser in the form of a packed column. Different types of nozzles are considered to choose the best option. As a result of thermal design calculation of the contact capacitor, it is proposed to use Rashiga rings (15152) as a nozzle, which provide the lowest height of the nozzle at the required diameter of the device.

Time-mean endwall heat transfer and flow-field data in the endwall region are presented for a turbulent juncture flow formed with a symmetric bluff body. The experimental technique employed allowed the simultaneous recording of instantaneous particle image velocimetry flow field data, and thermochromic liquid-crystal-based endwall heat transfer data. The time-mean flow field on the symmetry plane is characterized by the presence of primary (horseshoe), secondary, tertiary, and corner vortices. On the symmetry plane the time-mean horseshoe vortex displays a bimodal vorticity distribution and a stable-focus streamline topology indicative of vortex stretching. Off the symmetry plane, the horseshoe vortex grows in scale, and ultimately experiences a bursting, or breakdown, upon experiencing an adverse pressure gradient. The time-mean endwall heat transfer is dominated by two bands of high heat transfer, which circumscribe the leading edge of the bluff body. The band of highest heat transfer occurs in the corner region of the juncture, reflecting a 350% increase over the impinging turbulent boundary layer. A secondary high heat-transfer band develops upstream of the primary band, reflecting a 250% heat transfer increase, and is characterized by high levels of fluctuating heat load. The mean upstream position of the horseshoe vortex is coincident with a region of relatively low heat transfer that separates the two bands of high heat transfer.

Determination of heat loads is a key issue in the design of gas turbines. In order to optimize the cooling, an exact knowledge of the heat flux and temperature distributions on the airfoils surface is necessary. Heat transfer is influenced by various factors, like pressure distribution, wakes, surface curvature, secondary flow effects, surface roughness, free stream turbulence, and separation. Each of these phenomenons is a challenge for numerical simulations. Among numerical methods, large eddy simulations (LES) offers new design paths to diminish development costs of turbines through important reductions of the number of experimental tests. In this study, LES is coupled with a thermal solver in order to investigate the flow field and heat transfer around a highly loaded low pressure water-cooled turbine vane at moderate Reynolds number (150,000). The meshing strategy (hybrid grid with layers of prisms at the wall and tetrahedra elsewhere) combined with a high fidelity LES solver gives accurate predictions of the wall heat transfer coefficient for isothermal computations. Mesh convergence underlines the known result that wall-resolved LES requires discretizations for which y+ is of the order of one. The analysis of the flow field gives a comprehensive view of the main flow features responsible for heat transfer, mainly the separation bubble on the suction side that triggers transition to a turbulent boundary layer and the massive separation region on the pressure side. Conjugate heat transfer computation gives access to the temperature distribution in the blade, which is in good agreement with experimental measurements. Finally, given the uncertainty on the coolant water temperature provided by experimentalists, uncertainty quantification allows apprehension of the effect of this parameter on the temperature distribution.

During recent years,micro-channel heat transfer technique has been successfully used in many practical situations,and has notable advantages of high heat transfer efficiency and compact configuration.It is an important subject in modern hydrodynamic and heat transfer research field.Computational fluid dynamic program CFX will be used in this article to simulate flow and heat transfer of single-phase water in micro-channel ,flow and temperature felid will be described visually in CFX, and this object is searching a new method to research more flow and heat transfer of single-phase water.
