Experimental Observations of Nitrogen Diluted Ethylene and Methane Jet Flames

While the liftoff mechanisms of nitrogen-diluted methane jet flames have been well documented, higher order fuels, such as ethylene, have not been studied as extensively with regards to flame stabilization and behavior. Higher order fuels generally burn more intensely, and thus produce much different stabilization patterns than those of simple hydrocarbon fuels, such as methane. The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of nitrogen dilution on ethylene combustion and compare to that witnessed in typical methane jet flames; specifically, the influence on the liftoff height, blowout, and flame chemiluminescence. Liftoff and blowout velocities were compared for various mixtures of ethylene without nitrogen. It was observed that the reason behind the varying stabilization patterns is due to the higher thermal diffusivity of ethylene as well the higher flame speeds that are characterized in the combustion of ethylene. Using a sequence of images from each mixture, the flame liftoff heights were recorded. Due to the strong chemiluminescence of ethylene flames, little fluctuation between liftoff parameters was observed, with respect the velocity; however, there was a significant effect on the liftoff height, with respect to dilution. Blowout for fuel mixtures was much more difficult to achieve due to the higher thermal diffusivity of ethylene, meaning the flame would stabilize at positions much farther downstream than those of simple hydrocarbon fuels.

The effects of diluents on the liftoff of turbulent, partially premixed methane and ethylene jet flames for potential impact in industrial burner operation for multifuel operation have been investigated. Both fuel jets were diluted with nitrogen and argon in separate experiments, and the flame liftoff heights were compared for a variety of flow conditions. Methane flames have been shown to liftoff at lower jet velocities and reach blowout conditions much more rapidly than ethylene flames. Diluting ethylene and methane jets with nitrogen and argon, independently, resulted in varying trends for each fuel. At low dilution levels (∼5% by mole fraction), methane flames were lifted to similar heights, regardless of the diluent type; however, at higher dilution levels (∼10% by mole fraction) the argon diluent produced a flame which stabilized farther downstream. Ethylene jet flames proved to vary less in liftoff heights with respect to diluent type. Significant soot reduction with dilution is witnessed for both ethylene and methane flames, in that flame luminosity alteration occurs at the flame base at increasing levels of argon and nitrogen dilution. The increasing dilution levels also decreased the liftoff velocity of the fuel. Analysis showed little variance among liftoff heights in ethylene flames for the various inert diluents, while methane flames proved to be more sensitive to diluent type. This sensitivity is attributed to the more narrow limits of flammability of methane in comparison to ethylene, as well as the much higher flame speed of ethylene flames.

The use of highly reactive hydrogen-rich fuels in lean premixed combustion systems strongly affects the operability of stationary gas turbines (GT) resulting in higher autoignition and flashback risks. The present study investigates the autoignition behavior and ignition kernel evolution of hydrogen–nitrogen fuel mixtures in an inline co-flow injector configuration at relevant reheat combustor operating conditions. High-speed luminosity and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in an optically accessible reheat combustor are employed. Autoignition and flame stabilization limits strongly depend on temperatures of vitiated air and carrier preheating. Higher hydrogen content significantly promotes the formation and development of different types of autoignition kernels: More autoignition kernels evolve with higher hydrogen content showing the promoting effect of equivalence ratio on local ignition events. Autoignition kernels develop downstream a certain distance from the injector, indicating the influence of ignition delay on kernel development. The development of autoignition kernels is linked to the shear layer development derived from global experimental conditions.

This paper discusses the development and testing of a full-scale micro-mixing lean-premix injector for hydrogen and syngas fuels that demonstrated ultra-low emissions and stable operation without flashback for high-hydrogen fuels at representative full-scale operating conditions. The injector was fabricated using Macrolamination technology, which is a process by which injectors are manufactured from bonded layers. The injector utilizes sixteen micro-mixing cups for effective and rapid mixing of fuel and air in a compact package. The full scale injector is rated at 1.3 MWth when operating on natural gas at 12.4 bar (180 psi) combustor pressure. The injector operated without flash back on fuel mixtures ranging from 100% natural gas to 100% hydrogen and emissions were shown to be insensitive to operating pressure. Ultra-low NOx emissions of 3 ppm were achieved at a flame temperature of 1750 K (2690 °F) using a fuel mixture containing 50% hydrogen and 50% natural gas by volume with 40% nitrogen dilution added to the fuel stream. NOx emissions of 1.5 ppm were demonstrated at a flame temperature over 1680 K (2564 °F) using the same fuel mixture with only 10% nitrogen dilution, and NOx emissions of 3.5 ppm were demonstrated at a flame temperature of 1730 K (2650 °F) with only 10% carbon dioxide dilution. Finally, using 100% hydrogen with 30% carbon dioxide dilution, 3.6 ppm NOx emissions were demonstrated at a flame temperature over 1600 K (2420 °F). Superior operability was achieved with the injector operating at temperatures below 1470 K (2186 °F) on a fuel mixture containing 87% hydrogen and 13% natural gas. The tests validated the micro-mixing fuel injector technology and the injectors show great promise for use in future gas turbine engines operating on hydrogen, syngas or other fuel mixtures of various compositions.

With the increased utilization of multicomponent fuels, such as natural gas and biogas, in industrial applications, there is a need to be able to effectively model and predict the properties of jet flames for mixed fuels. In addition, the interaction of these diluted fuels with outside influences (such as differing levels of coflow air) is a primary consideration. Experiments were performed on methane jet flames under the influence of varying levels of nitrogen dilution, from low Reynolds number lifted regimes to blowout, observing the influence of the nitrogen on lifted flame height and flame chemiluminesence images. These findings were analyzed and compared with existing lifted jet flame relations, such as the flammable region approximation proposed by Tieszen et al., as well as to undiluted flames. The influence of nitrogen dilution was seen to have an effect on the liftoff height of the flame, as well as the blowout velocity of the flame, but was seen to have a less pronounced effect compared with flames with coflowing air.

Abstract A detailed investigation on flame structures and stabilization mechanisms of confined high momentum jet flames by one-dimensional (1D)-laser Raman measurements is presented. The flames were operated with natural gas (NG) at gas turbine relevant conditions in an optically accessible high-pressure test rig. The generic burner represents a full scale single nozzle of a high temperature FLOX® gas turbine combustor including a pilot stage. 1D-laser Raman measurements were performed on both an unpiloted and a piloted flame and evaluated on a single shot basis revealing the thermochemical states from unburned inflow conditions to burned hot gas in terms of average and statistical values of the major species concentrations, the mixture fraction and the temperature. The results show a distinct difference in the flame stabilization mechanism between the unpiloted and the piloted case. The former is apparently driven by strong mixing of fresh unburned gas and recirculated hot burned gas that eventually causes autoignition. The piloted flame is stabilized by the pilot stage followed by turbulent flame propagation. The findings help to understand the underlying combustion mechanisms and to further develop gas turbine burners following the FLOX concept.

Experiments were performed on a prototype 4th generation DLE (dry low emission) burner under atmospheric pressure conditions to investigate the effects of hydrogen (H2) enrichment on methane (CH4) flames. The burner assembly was designed to have three concentrically arranged premixed sections: an outer Main section, an intermediate section (Pilot) and a central pilot body termed the RPL (Rich-Pilot-Lean) section. The Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of OH radicals together with flame chemiluminescence imaging were employed for studying the local flame characteristics so as to be able to investigate the turbulence-flame interactions and the location of the reaction zone at the burner exit. Flames were investigated for three different fuel mixtures having hydrogen (H2)/methane (CH4) in vol. % concentration of 0/100, 25/75 and 50/50. The results show that the characteristics of the flames are clearly affected by the addition of hydrogen and the effects are expected due to the faster reaction rate, higher diffusivity and higher laminar burning velocity of H2. Enriching the flame with H2 at a constant global phi (ϕ) is found to shorten the total extension of the flame due to the higher laminar flame speed. The OH signal distribution becomes thicker and more pronounced due to the higher production of OH radicals, and the flame stabilization zone that is produced after the burner throat, moves further downstream. At a constant global ϕ in altering the RPL and the Pilot ϕ, similar changes for both 0/100 and 25/75 (in vol. %) of the H2/CH4 fuel mixtures can be observed. At a rich RPL ϕ, the secondary RPL flame contributes to the main flame and to determining the flame stabilization position. The flame stabilization zone located after the burner throat moves further downstream with an increase in the RPL ϕ. When the PFR (Pilot fuel ratio) increases, the extension of the flame shortens and the flame stabilization zone moves upstream. Combustion emissions were also determined so as to observe the effects of the H2 enrichment on the NOX level.

The purpose of this study is to observe methane jet flames under varying levels of nitrogen dilution and coflowing air. The jet flames were examined in order to determine the conditions for which liftoff and blowout occur under conditions that strain the flame. Methane flow rates were varied, corresponding to intermediate lifted positions to blowout. A sequence of images were taken at each level of dilution and coflow, and were used to determine the lowest radial and axial position of the flammability limit. These flammability regions were compared to the lean flammability limit. It was observed that flame shape and liftoff were considerably more influenced by the effects of the coflowing air compared to the presence of the diluents, and that flames under coflow lost the trailing diffusion flame earlier, which has been shown to be a marker for flame blowout.
