A Numerical Study on the Design and Flow Patterns of Compressor Impeller in a Marine Engine Turbocharger

The centrifugal compressor design of the high-speed marine engine (500–900 kW) turbocharger has been done. Increased Higher compressed air and power density help improvement of the engine performance and power. The centrifugal compressor of the marine engine turbocharger is composed of impeller, 1st vaneless diffuser, vaned diffuser, 2nd vaneless diffuser and volute casing. The design process is achieved by three following stages. First, quasi-two dimensional code is used to determine the main geometry of the compressor. Second, three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equation is applied to analyze the flow pattern and structures of the compressor blade loading. Here, among compressor impeller geometry, blade height variables are mainly changed. Smooth flow guidance has to precede and flow separation symptoms must not appear within compressor impeller. When the loading distribution is inadequate from blade hub to shroud, new curved profile should be designed to minimize the pressure loss. By analyzing the internal flow fields for the compressor impeller geometry variations, three dimensional impeller design profile has been confirmed. Compressed air pressure and mass flow rates from new optimized design were 2.7%, 27.3% higher than that of old one each other. Third, analyzed results are compared with experimental data for the verification of the present design method.

ABSTRACTThis paper is a numerical simulation that was made in the three-dimensional flow, carried out in a modified centrifugal compressor, having vaned diffuser stage, used as an auto-motive turbo charger. Moreover, the performance of the centrifugal compressor was dependent on the proper matching between compressor impeller and vaned diffuser, influencing significantly surge and the efficiency of centrifugal compressor stages. In addition, a modified compressor impeller, coupled with vane and vaneless diffuser, has been found to have similar internal flow patterns for both the vaneless and vaned diffuser design. The vaned diffuser effect has been paid particular attention in terms of better analysis where the diffuser was designed for high sub-sonic inlet conditions. Another aim of this research was to study and simulate the effect of vaned diffuser on the performance of a centrifugal compressor. The simulation was undertaken by using a commercial software, the so-called ANSYS CFX, to predict numerically the performance in terms of pressure ratio, poly tropic efficiency and mass flow rate for the centrifugal compressor stage. The results were generated from CFD and were analyzed for better understanding of the fluid flow through centrifugal compressor stage. Conclusively, it was observed that the effect of the vaned diffuser is to convert the kinetic energy into a high static pressure after analyzing the results of the simulation.

Shown the possibility of using the standard ANSYS CFX hydrodynamic software package for calculating the gasdynamic characteristics of the centrifugal compressor impeller of micro turbojet engines with different options for profiling blades which based on physical and numerical modeling. Presented a methodology for designing the impeller of a centrifugal compressor based on solving the inverse problem of gas dynamics. As a result of a numerical study, the head coefficient of various forms of the impeller was obtained and presented the dependences of the head coefficient and efficiency on the blade back sweep angle 2 β . b The article discusses the effect of the blade back sweep angle 2 β b on the compressor efficiency and the head characteristic for three different values of the blade back sweep angle 2 β b for example, the impeller with the back sweep angle  2 β b and with the radial blades  2 β 90 b and with blades bent forward  2 β b The centrifugal compressor was designed using Vista CCD programs in one-dimensional computing and Fluid flow CFX in three-dimensional computing. For blade profiling, the BladeGend program was used with different profiling options in order to improve compressor efficiency. The computational grid and the construction of a structured hexahedral mesh for the impeller was carried out in Ansys Turbogrid and the SST model of turbulence was selected in the calculation, which, with sufficient grinding of the mesh at the walls, adequately simulates separated flows at the channel walls, as well as the flow in the flow core. When constructing a grid along the walls between the channel blades, the parameter y + was controlled, which should not exceed 2. It is permissible to use a coarser grid in the flow core compared to the grid near the walls. The design grid of the impeller consists of 350000 elements.

Numerical analysis of the three-dimensional turbulent flow in an unshrouded impeller of a high-speed centrifugal compressor has been conducted using the multi-purpose CFD code STAR-CD. The work presented in this paper concentrates mainly on assessing the effects of the modelling of the actual spinner geometry on the quality of the predictions as compared to the often used practice of simplifying the inlet geometry. Furthermore, the contribution of detailed modelling of the flow in the tip clearance is studied using a two-layer k-ε turbulence model. As well as a qualitative analysis of the throughflow and tip leakage, a systematic quantitative comparison between the predicted and measured mean velocities and flow angles is presented.

The centrifugal compressor of marine engine turbocharger is composed of impeller, 1st vaneless diffuser, vaned diffuser, 2nd vaneless diffuser and volute casing. An examination of the condition of the flow leaving the impeller exit kinetic energy often accounts for 30–50% of the shaft work input to the compressor stage, and for energy efficiency it is important to recover as much of this as possible. This is the function of the diffuser which follows the impeller. Effective pressure recovery downstream of an impeller is very important to realize a centrifugal compressor with high efficiency and high pressure ratio, and an appropriate selection of a diffuser for a specific impeller is a critical step to develop the compressor accordingly. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sensitivity of how compressor performances changes as vaned diffuser geometry is varied. Three kinds of vaned diffusers were studied and its results were compared. First vaned diffuser type is based on NACA airfoil and second is channel diffuser and third is conformal transformation of NACA 65 airfoil. Mean-line prediction method was applied to investigate the performance and stability for three kinds of diffusers. And CFD analyses have been done for comparison and detailed interior flow pattern study. In this study, the off design behavior of three different type of diffuser, given by mean-line prediction, was investigated using CFD results and selected best diffuser geometry which satisfy wider operating range and higher pressure recovery than the others. The numerical results were compared with experimental data for validation.

The article describes an assessment of possible changes in constant fatigue life of a medium flow-coefficient centrifugal compressor impeller subject to operation at close-to-surge point. Some aspects of duct acoustics are additionally analyzed. The experimental measurements at partial load are presented and are primarily used for validation of unidirectionally coupled fluid-structural numerical model. The model is based on unsteady finite-volume fluid-flow simulations and on finite-element transient structural analysis. The validation is followed by the model implementation to replicate the industry-scale loads with reasonably higher rotational speed and suction pressure. The approach demonstrates satisfactory accuracy in prediction of stage performance and unsteady flow field in vaneless diffuser. The latter is deduced from signal analysis relying on continuous wavelet transformations. On the other hand, it is found that the aerodynamic incidence losses at close-to-surge point are underpredicted. The structural simulation generates considerable amounts of numerical noise, which has to be separated prior to evaluation of fluid-induced dynamic strain. The main source of disturbance is defined as a stationary region of static pressure drop caused by flow contraction at volute tongue and leading to first engine-order excitation in rotating frame of reference. Eventually, it is concluded that the amplitude of excitation is too low to lead to any additional fatigue.

A numerical study that was made in a three-dimensional flow, carried out in a modified centrifugal compressor, having vaned diffuser stage, used as an automotive turbo charger. In order to study the influence of vaned diffuser meridional outlet section with a different width ratio of the modified centrifugal compressor. Moreover, the performance of the centrifugal compressor was dependent on the proper matching between the compressor impeller along the vaned diffuser. The aerodynamic characteristics were compared under different meridional width ratio. In addition, the velocity vectors in diffuser flow passages, and the secondary flow in cross-section near the outlet of diffuser were analysed in detail under different meridional width ratio. Another aim of this research was to study and simulate the effect of vaned diffuser on the performance of a centrifugal compressor. The simulation was undertaken using commercial software so-called ANSYS CFX, to predict numerically the performance charachteristics. The results were generated from CFD and were analysed for better understanding of the fluid flow through centrifugal compressor stage and as a result of the minimum width ratio the flow in diffuser passage tends to be uniformity. Moreover, the backflow and vortex near the pressure surface disappear, and the vortex and detachment near the suction surface decrease. Conclusively, it was observed that the efficiency was increased and both the total pressure ratio and static pressure for minimum width ratio are increased.

This study experimentally and numerically investigates the effect of application of curvilinear element blades to fully-shrouded centrifugal compressor impeller on the performance of centrifugal compressor stage. Design suction flow coefficient of compressor stage investigated in this study is 0.125. The design guidelines for the curvilinear element blades which had been previously developed was applied to line element blades of a reference conventional impeller and a new centrifugal compressor impeller with curvilinear element blades was designed. Numerical calculations and performance tests of two centrifugal compressor stages with the conventional impeller and the new one were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of application of the curvilinear element blades and compare the inner flowfield in details. Despite 0.5% deterioration of the impeller efficiency, it was confirmed from the performance test results that the compressor stage with the new impeller achieved 1.7% higher stage efficiency at the design point than that with the conventional one. Moreover, it was confirmed that the compressor stage with the new impeller achieved almost the same off-design performance as that of the conventional stage. From results of the numerical calculations and the experiments, it is considered that this efficiency improvement of the new stage was achieved by suppression of the secondary flows in the impeller due to application of negative tangential lean. The suppression of the secondary flows in the impeller achieved uniformalized flow distribution at the impeller outlet and increased the static pressure recovery coefficient in the vaneless diffuser. As a result, it is thought that the total pressure loss was reduced downstream of the vaneless diffuser outlet in the new stage.

The reduction of fluid-dynamic losses in high speed gearing systems is nowadays increasing importance in the design of innovative aircraft propulsion systems, which are particularly focused on improving the propulsive efficiency. Main sources of fluid-dynamic losses in high speed gearing systems are windage losses, inertial losses resulting by impinging oil jets used for jet lubrication and the losses related to the compression and the subsequent expansion of the fluid trapped between gears teeth. The numerical study of the latter is particularly challenging since it faces high speed multiphase flows interacting with moving surfaces, but it paramount for improving knowledge of the fluid behavior in such regions. The current work aims to analyze trapping losses in a gear pair by means of three-dimensional CFD simulations. In order to reduce the numerical effort, an approach for restricting computational domain was defined, thus only a portion of the gear pair geometry was discretized. Transient calculations of a gear pair rotating in an oil-free environment were performed, in the context of conventional eddy viscosity models. Results were compared with experimental data from the open literature in terms of transient pressure within a tooth space, achieving a good agreement. Finally, a strategy for meshing losses calculation was developed and results as a function of rotational speed were discussed.
