An Experimental and Numerical Study of a Hydrogen Fueled, Directly Injected, Heavy Duty Engine at Knock-Limited Conditions

Abstract This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of a directly injected, spark-ignited (DI SI), heavy duty hydrogen fueled engine at knock-limited conditions. The impact of air-fuel ratio and ignition timing on engine performance is first investigated experimentally. Two-zone combustion modeling of the hydrogen fueled cylinder is then used to infer burn profiles and unburned, end-gas conditions using the measured in-cylinder pressure traces. Simulation of the autoignition chemistry in this end-gas is then undertaken to identify key parameters that are likely to impact knock-limited behavior. The experiments demonstrate knock-limited performance on this high compression ratio engine over a wide range of air-fuel ratios, λ. Other trends with λ are qualitatively similar to those shown in previous studies of hydrogen fueled engines. Kinetic simulations then suggest that some plausible combination of residual nitric oxide from previous cycles and locally high charge temperatures at intake valve closing can lead to autoignition at the knock-limited conditions identified in the experiments. This prompts a parametric study that shows how increased λ makes hydrogen less likely to autoignite, and suggests options for the design of high efficiency, directly injected, hydrogen fueled engines.

A wide range of strategies for reducing energy consumption from heavy-duty vehicles have been explored from vehicle electrification to real-time vehicle energy management based on vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Full electrification of heavy-duty vehicles can be challenging due to current limitations on battery energy density. However, hybridization and the implementation of high efficiency engines present other potential near-term solutions. In contrast to many prior studies that have explored the use of one or two of these techniques, this work discusses the combined influence of hybridization level, engine combustion mode, and connected energy management on fuel efficiency in heavy-duty applications. The impact of hybridization in different driving conditions is quantified and the effectiveness of hybrid powertrain structures with different engine combustion strategies is also explored. Utilizing an alternative combustion strategy can improve fuel efficiency by 5% in conventional and mild hybrids but was found to have a more minimal impact in full hybrids. An additional layer of complexity is also introduced when vehicles have some degree of connectivity and this influence on the energy management method is investigated by comparing control approaches which leverage current and future vehicle speed information. Connectivity and the ability to optimize energy production in real-time was found to be essential in uncertain cases and enable improvements in fuel consumption of up to 12% over baseline cases.

Recent experiments with droplets impacting macro-textured superhydrophobic surfaces revealed new regimes of bouncing with a remarkable reduction of the contact time. Here we present a comprehensive numerical study that reveals the physics behind these new bouncing regimes and quantifies the roles played by various external and internal forces. For the first time, accurate three-dimensional simulations involving realistic macro-textured surfaces are performed. After demonstrating that simulations reproduce experiments in a quantitative manner, the study is focused on analysing the flow situations beyond current experiments. We show that the experimentally observed reduction of contact time extends to higher Weber numbers, and analyse the role played by the texture density. Moreover, we report a nonlinear behaviour of the contact time with the increase of the Weber number for imperfectly coated textures, and study the impact on tilted surfaces in a wide range of Weber numbers. Finally, we present novel energy analysis techniques that elaborate and quantify the interplay between the kinetic and surface energy, and the role played by the dissipation for various Weber numbers.

Engine performance and emissions of a six-stroke gasoline compression ignition engine with a wide range of continuously variable valve duration control were numerically investigated at low engine load conditions. For the simulations, an in-house three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code with high-fidelity physical sub-models was used, and the combustion and emission kinetics were computed using a reduced kinetics mechanism for a 14-component gasoline surrogate fuel. Variation of valve timing and duration was considered under both positive valve overlap and negative valve overlap including the rebreathing of intake valves via continuously variable valve duration control. Close attention was paid to understand the effects of two additional strokes of the engine cycle on the thermal and chemical conditions of charge mixtures that alter ignition, combustion and energy recovery processes. Double injections were found to be necessary to effectively utilize the additional two strokes for the combustion of overly mixed lean charge mixtures during the second power stroke. It was found that combustion phasing in both power strokes is effectively controlled by the intake valve closure timing. Engine operation under negative valve overlap condition tends to advance the ignition timing of the first power stroke but has minimal effect on the ignition timing of second power stroke. Re-breathing was found to be an effective way to control the ignition timing in second power stroke at a slight expense of the combustion efficiency. The operation of a six-stroke gasoline compression ignition engine could be successfully simulated. In addition, the operability range of the six-stroke gasoline compression ignition engine could be substantially extended by employing the continuously variable valve duration technique.

In this paper, the impact of transformer turns ratio on the performance of the quasi-Z-source galvanically isolated DC-DC converters is studied. Embedded buck–boost functionality enables these converters to regulate the input voltage and load in a wide range, which makes them suitable for such demanding application as photovoltaic microconverters. The isolation transformer here plays a central role as its turns ratio defines the point of transition between the boost and buck modes and overall capability of the converter to regulate the input voltage in a wide range at high efficiency. The studied quasi-Z-source galvanically isolated DC-DC converter is benchmarked in terms of power loss of components and weighted power conversion efficiency for three different turns ratios of isolation transformer to achieve the best and optimized turns ratio lead to the efficient operation. Operation in a wide range of input voltage at high efficiency is the main criterion for assessing the effect of turns ratio on the efficiency of the converter. The proposed loss model and theoretical predictions of the efficiency were validated with the help of a 300 W experimental prototype of the photovoltaic microconverter based on the quasi-Z-source galvanically isolated DC-DC converter topology.

This paper presents a simplified and fast method to evaluate the impact of a single engine component design on the overall performance. It consists of three steps. In the first step, an engine system model is developed using available data on existing engines. Alongside the cycle reference point, a sweep of operating points within the flight envelop is simulated. The engine model is tuned to match a wide range of conditions. In the second step, the module that contains the engine component of interest is analyzed. Different correlations between the component design and the module efficiency are investigated. In the third step, the deviations in efficiency related to different component configurations are implemented in the engine baseline model. Eventually, the effects on the performances are evaluated. The procedure is demonstrated for the case of a two-spool turbofan. The effects of tip leakage in the low pressure turbine on the overall engine performance are analyzed. In today’s collaborative engine development programs, the OEMs facilitate the design process by using advanced simulation software, in-house available technical correlations and experience. Suppliers of parts have a limited influence on the design of the components they are responsible for. This can be rectified by the proposed methodology and give subcontractors a deeper insight into the design process. It is based on commercially available PC engine simulation tools and provides a general understanding of the relations between component design and engine performance. These relations may also take into account of aspects like production technology and materials in component optimization.

Abstract In this paper, the single-sided vibro-impact track nonlinear energy sink (SSVI track NES) is studied. The SSVI track NES, which is attached to a primary structure, has nonlinear behavior caused by the NES mass moving on a fixed track and impacting on the primary structure at an impact surface. Unlike previous studies of the SSVI track NES, both the horizontal and vertical dynamics of the primary structure are considered. A numerical study is carried out to investigate the way in which energy is dissipated in this system. Assuming a track shape with a quartic polynomial, an optimization procedure that considers the total energy dissipated during a time period is carried out, to determine the optimum NES mass and track parameter. It is found that there is dynamic coupling between the horizontal and vertical directions caused by the SSVI track NES motion. The vibrational energy, originally in the structure in the horizontal direction, is transferred to the vertical motion of the structure where it is dissipated. Considering that many civil and mechanical systems are particularly vulnerable to extreme loads in the horizontal direction, this energy transformation can be beneficial to prevent or limit damage to the structure. The effect on energy dissipation of the position of the impact surface in the SSVI track NES and the ratio of the vertical to horizontal stiffness in the primary structure are discussed. Numerical results demonstrate a robust and stable performance of the SSVI track NES over a wide range of stiffness ratios.

Geometric instabilities in bilayered structures control the surface morphology in a wide range of biological and technical systems. Depending on the application, different mechanisms induce compressive stresses in the bilayer. However, the impact of the chosen origin of compression on the critical conditions, post-buckling evolution and higher-order pattern selection remains insufficiently understood. Here, we conduct a numerical study on a finite-element set-up and systematically vary well-known factors contributing to pattern selection under the four main origins of compression: film growth, substrate shrinkage and whole-domain compression with and without pre-stretch. We find that the origin of compression determines the substrate stretch state at the primary instability point and thus significantly affects the critical buckling conditions. Similarly, it leads to different post-buckling evolutions and secondary instability patterns when the load further increases. Our results emphasize that future phase diagrams of geometric instabilities should incorporate not only the film thickness but also the origin of compression. Thoroughly understanding the influence of the origin of compression on geometric instabilities is crucial to solving real-life problems such as the engineering of smart surfaces or the diagnosis of neuronal disorders, which typically involve temporally or spatially combined origins of compression.

Injection timing variations have a significant effect on the performance and pollutant formation in diesel engines. Numerical study was conducted to investigate the impact of injection timing on engine performance and pollutants in a six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Diesel fuel with different amounts (5%, 15%, and 25% by volume) of n-butanol was used. Simulations were performed at four distinct injection timings (5°, 10°, 20°, 25°CA bTDC) and two distinct loads of brake mean effective pressure (BMEP = 4.5 bar and 10.5 bar) at constant engine speed (1800 rpm) using the GT-Power computational simulation package. The primary objective of this research is to determine the optimum injection timing and optimum blending ratio for improved efficiencies and reduced emissions. Notable improvements in engine performance and pollutant trends were observed for butanol-diesel blends. The addition of butanol to diesel fuel has greatly diminished NOX and CO pollutants but it elevated HC and CO2 emissions. Retarded injection timing decreased NOX and CO2 pollutants while HC and CO2 emissions increased. The results also indicated that early injection timings (20°CA bTDC and 25°CA bTDC) lowered both CO2 and unburned hydrocarbon emissions. Moreover, advanced injection timing slightly improved brake thermal efficiency (BTE) for all engine loads. It is concluded that retarded injection timing, i.e., 10°CA bTDC demonstrated optimum results in terms of performance, combustion and emissions and among the fuels 15B showed good outcome with regard to BTE, higher heat release rate, and lower pollution of HC, CO, and NOx.

In this article, based on a combined chemical mechanism with detailed ethanol oxidization and NO production mechanisms, a single cylinder ethanol HCCI engine model was established using the software CHEMKIN. Comparing with experimental data, this model can well predict cylinder pressure and NO emission. By changing mole fraction of hydrogen peroxide in initial ethanol mixture at different conditions, the effect of hydrogen peroxide additive on ethanol HCCI engine performance was investigated. The results show that hydrogen peroxide can effectively improve cylinder pressure and advance heat release progress, without notably increasing NO production.

Investigating the impact of jet fuel on diesel engine performance and emissions is very important for military vehicles, due to the US Army Single Fuel Forward Policy mandating that deployed vehicles must refuel with aviation fuel JP-8. There is a known torque and fuel economy penalty associated with the operation of a diesel engine with JP-8 fuel, due to its lower density and viscosity. On the other hand, a few experimental studies have suggested that kerosene-based fuels have the potential for lowering exhaust emissions, especially particulate matter, compared to diesel fuel #2 (DF-2). However, studies so far have typically focused on quantifying the effects of simply replacing the regular DF-2 with JP-8, rather than fully investigating the reasons behind the observed differences. This research evaluates the effect of using JP-8 fuel in a heavy-duty diesel engine on fuel injection, combustion, performance, and emissions, and subsequently utilizes the obtained insight to propose changes to the engine calibration to mitigate the impact of the trade-offs. Experiments were carried out on a Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) S60 engine outfitted with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The results indicate that torque and fuel economy of diesel fuel can be matched, without smoke or NO x penalty, by increasing the duration of injection to compensate for the lower fuel density. The lower cetane number of JP-8 caused an increased ignition delay and increased premixed combustion, and their cumulative effect led to relatively unchanged combustion phasing. Under almost all conditions, JP-8 led to lower NO x and particulate matter (PM) emissions and shifted the NO x-PM trade-off favourably.
