This paper deals with the assessment of dispersiod content and the effect of chill for improved mechanical properties. Investigation is carried out to evaluate Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), Fracture toughness, Hardness, and microstructure of chilled aluminum matrix and quartz particulate composite. In the present work, Quartz (SiO2) particles ranging from 30- to 100μm were chosen as dispersiod and added, ranging from 3 to 12 wt% in steps of 3%. The composite was prepared by stir-casting technique and poured into the sand molds incorporated with non-metallic and metallic chills. Test result showed that this MMC was greatly influenced by the dispersiod and chills. Fracture toughness & UTS of the composite are found to depend on the wt% of the dispersiod and chilling medium. It is observed that chill has influenced hardness of the composite. Volumetric heat capacity (VHC) of the chill is found to increase the amount of heat absorbed. Microstructure analysis also reveled uniform distribution of the dispersiod, which results in improved properties of the particulate metal matrix composite.

Composite materials like Aluminium metal matrix composite is playing a very important role in manufacturing industries e.g. automobile and aerospace industries, due to their superior properties such as light weight, low density, high specific modulus, high fatigue strength etc., In this study Aluminium(Al 6061) is reinforced with Silicon Carbide particles and fabricated by Stir Casting Technique (vortex method). The MMC rectangular bars (samples) are prepared with Al6061 and SiC (28 µ size) as the reinforced particles by weight fraction from 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of SiC. The microstructure analysis and Mechanical properties like Tensile Strength, Vickers Hardness and Charpy Impact Strength were investigated on prepared specimens. It is observed that the properties are increased with increasing of reinforced specimens by weight fraction.

It is well known that the addition of ceramic phases in an alloy e.g. aluminum, in form of fibers or particles influences its mechanical properties. This leads to a new generation of materials, which are called metal matrix composites (MMCs). They have found a lot of application during the last twenty-five years due to their low density, high strength and toughness, good fatigue and wear resistance. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well known for their good thermophysical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites in the automobile industry. Automobile industry use aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC or Al2O3 particles for the production of pistons, brake rotors, calipers and liners. However, no reference could be cited in the international literature concerning aluminum reinforced with TiB particles and Fe and Cr, although these composites are very promising for improving the mechanical properties of this metal without significantly alter its corrosion behavior. Several processing techniques have been developed for the production of reinforced aluminum alloys. This paper is concerned with the study of TiB, Fe and Cr reinforced aluminum produced by the stir-casting method.

The objective of this work is to investigate the process parameters which influence the fracture toughness of aluminum-silicon carbide particulate composite prepared using the stir casting technique. The Taguchi’s design of experiments is conducted to analyze the process parameters. Three parameters considered are composition of material, grain size and a/W ratio. From the Taguchi’s analysis, on compact tension specimens, aluminum 6061 reinforced with 9 wt% of the silicon carbide particles composite and a/W ratio of 0.45 are considered to be optimized parameters. Taguchi's technique result shows that the increment in the a/W ratio causes decrement in the load carrying capacity of the composite. Whereas the fine grain size of silicon carbide have better toughness values. From the ANOVA outcomes it is clear that the composition and a/W ratio of the geometry has more influence on the fracture toughness than the grain size of reinforcement.

Composite materials are defined as material systems consisting of mixture of or combination of two or more micro constituents insoluble in each other and differing in form and or material composition. In this study Metal Matrix Composite (MMCs) has been produced using stir casting method for performing the mechanical properties. Most of the engineering industries want light and better mechanical properties of components; this can be achieved by MMCs of Aluminium because of its excellent performance. In this research work we fabricate the Aluminium by liquid route. Here Al 7075 is used as a base metal and Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) used as sub metal with various percentages. Experiments were conducted to analyze microstructure, hardness & tensile strength. By using optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) we analyze the sample specimens are well dispersion in MWCNT with AA 7075. Hardness and tensile strength increases with increasing of wt. %. Hardness of material increases with increase in percentages of MWCNT, whereas tensile strength of the material increases with increase in percentages of MWCNT and Elongation reduces

This study was conducted to investigate the synthesis, characterization and mechanical properties of aluminium reinforced with ferrotitanium and silicon carbide via stir casting technique. Microstructures of as-cast samples were analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopes equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The mechanical properties in terms of hardness, tensile, tribological behaviour and fracture were assessed. Results showed that the homogeneous dispersion of reinforcement was within the metal matrix composite. Tribological study revealed a decrease in frictional coefficient of the composites with lowest frictional coefficient observed in composite with addition of silicon carbide as reinforcement. Morphology of fractured surface displayed a reduction in the size of dimples formed in reinforced aluminium composites when compared with larger dimple sizes observed in as-cast aluminium alloy.

Aluminium based composite are getting a vast scope nowadays because of its properties and availability. In the present work, fly ash and AL2O3 reinforced composite are prepared using stir casting technique for varying wt.% (fly ash 3% and AL2O3 3%, 6% & 9%). Hardness and tensile properties were determined, with the addition of reinforcement the properties are improved compared to the parent metal alone. Based on the evaluation 6% AL2O3 and 3%fly ash gives a better result as compared to other composition.

Aluminum metal matrix composites are a new class of materials that have gathered more attention from many materialists. Especially, the automotive components like a piston, cylinder block, brake drum, etc., fabricated by different reinforcement, which has exposed better performance over conventional engineering materials. Aluminum composites are generally fabricated by stir casting technique due to simplicity in operation and adaptive to mass or job order production. The paper provides a background for the readers interested in the production of metal matrix composites through stir casting. Based on the literature assessment, the special attentions taken by the researchers to enhance the uniform distribution of particle to avoid agglomeration are discussed. The composite performances mainly depend on the aluminum matrix, particle size, the quantity of reinforcement, preheating temperature of reinforcement, and processing parameters such as stirring speed, stirring time, and wetting agents. The selection of two reinforcements and their suitable parameters for wetting are attaining interest by many researchers and maybe opted as future scope.

Stir casting is an economical process for the production of aluminum matrix composites. There are many parameters in this process, which affect the final microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. In this study, micron-sized SiC and Gr particles were used as reinforcement to fabricate Al-SiC/Gr composites at holding temperature of 700 ± 5 °C for 5 min at 350 rev/min stirring speed. The evaluation of the mechanical properties of the composites show improvement compared with pure aluminum-matrix. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) of the as-cast composites shows that the vortex formations within the melt eliminates the agglomeration of the particles and improve the wettability phenomenon.
