Natural fiber composite materials are expected as capable materials which may replace the conventional and synthetic materials for the practical applications where manufacture requires less weight and energy conservation. In this study, three kinds of cellulosic-fiber mats including kenaf, bamboo and jute mats were used to fabricate composites by hand lay-up and compression molding methods. As the basic investigation, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out to analyze the material’s fatigue properties by using different bending or tensile loads. Moreover, the scanning electron microscope observation (SEM) on the fracture surfaces has been carried out respectively to investigate the degradation under cycle loads and discuss the possibility of kenaf/bamboo/jute composites achieving hypothetical outstanding mechanical properties in engineering uses.

Natural fiber composite materials are such an appropriate material, that replaces synthetic composite materials for many of practical applications where we need high strength and low density. Natural fiber composites combine the technological, ecological and economical aspects. This leads to discovering its vast applications in the aeronautics, automotive, marine and sporting sectors. This paper deals with the study on mechanical characterization (Tensile, Compression and Flexural) of jute/epoxy (JE) polymer composite. The flexural properties of composites are experimentally tested and are simulated in commercially available FEA software. Flexural tested results are in good agreement with FEA results. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the failed samples reveals the matrix dominated failure.

The fiber reinforced polymers are candidate materials for critical applications in view of the high strength, stiffness characteristics; however, they are highly anisotropic and have complex failure mechanisms. Thermo-mechanical response characterization is one of the means of identifying damage progression in these materials. In this study, tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid composite laminates and Infrared thermographs were used to capture the thermal response of the specimen for the entire range of loading till failure. The tests were conducted on natural fiber composite specimens and hybrid (natural + synthetic fiber) composite specimens. The natural fibers used were in the form of uni-directionally stitched mats of Sunhemp, Kenaf and Flax fiber. The synthetic fibers used were bi-directionally woven Carbon fiber mat and Glass fiber mat. All the laminates were prepared using the hand lay-up technique. Four different configurations of the laminates were prepared. The natural fiber composite laminate comprised of Sunhemp fiber mat in a polyester resin system. The Sunhemp fiber mat was also used with woven Glass fiber mat on one side to prepare an unsymmetrical hybrid laminate. The Kenaf fiber mat was placed between layers of woven Glass fiber mats whereas the flax fiber mat was placed between the woven carbon fiber mats; Epoxy LY 556 and hardener Araldite® was used as the matrix. The finished laminate thickness was 2.1 mm and dog-bone tensile specimens were extracted using a CNC router. Some of the specimens were impacted at low velocities from two different heights to study the change in thermo-mechanical response, post-impact, during tensile test. Temperature response as a function of applied stress, failure strain and work done suggests that there is a correlation between the fracture events that take place during tensile test with the temperature response. In cases where there was a ply-drop failure, the rate of temperature change could identify the failure events, even though the resultant peak temperature was less. When the specimen failed by a single mode of failure (delamination/fiber failure), the temperature rise was found to be proportional to the input work done during tensile testing.

Currently, researchers are more focusing on eco-friendly materials, sustainability, and low consumption of energy during the stage of handling, low initial cost, have appropriate mechanical properties and biodegradable and less susceptible to health hazards are the main challenge facing in the present day across the world especially to developing new materials that would improve the industrial supplies for making lightweight materials. Therefore; natural cellulosic fiber one, of effective strategies to substitute artificial fibers for its own benefits when compared and mainly concentrating to reinforce polymer matrices by natural cellulosic fiber due to their decomposable characteristic in nature. This an overview mainly discussed on commonly available natural fiber property such as physical property, chemical composition analysis, surface morphology analysis such as thermal stability analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to be adopted in order to characterized natural fiber and impact of treating natural fibers by appropriate chemical on certain properties was discussed by supporting literature. In addition to this the significance of characterization of natural fiber briefly discussed and this an overview will helps other researcher’s source for natural fiber composite studies in future studies.

A stent is employed to expand a narrowed tubular organ, such as a blood vessel. However, the persistent presence of a stainless steel stent yields several problems of late thrombosis, restenosis and chronic inflammation reactions. Biodegradable magnesium stents have been introduced to solve these problems. However, magnesium-based alloys suffer from poor ductility and lower than desired fatigue performance. There is still a huge demand for further research on new alloys and stent designs. Then, as fundamental research for this, AZ31 B magnesium alloy has been investigated for the effect of equal-channel angular pressing on the fatigue properties. ECAP was conducted for one pass and eight passes at 300 °C using a die with a channel angle of 90°. An annealed sample and ECAP sample of AZ31 B magnesium alloy were subjected to tensile and fatigue tests. As a result of the tensile test, strength in the ECAP (one pass) sample was higher than in the annealed sample. As a result of the fatigue test, at stress amplitude σa = 100 MPa, the number of cycles to failure was largest in the annealed sample, medium in the ECAP (one pass) sample and lowest in the ECAP (eight passes) sample. It was suggested that the small low cycle fatigue life of the ECAP (eight passes) sample is attributable to severe plastic deformation.

Composites are becoming essential part of today’s material because they offer advantages such as low weight, corrosion resistance, high fatigue strength; faster assembly etc. composites are generating curiosity and interest all over the worlds. The attempts can be found in literature for composite materials high strength fiber and also natural fiber like jute, flax and sisal natural fibers provides data but there is need of experimental data availability for unidirectional natural fiber composite with seldom natural fiber like cotton, palm leaf etc., it can provide a feasible range of alternative materials to suitable conventional material. It was decided to carry out the systematic experimental study for the effect of volume fraction of reinforcement on longitudinal strength as well as Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) using developed mould-punch set up and testing aids. The testing is carried out as per ASTM D3039/3039M-08. The comparative assessment of obtained experimental results with literature is also carried out, which forms an important constituent of present work. It is also observed through SEM images and theoretical investigations that interface/interphase plays and important role in natural fiber composite.
