A Rational Approach to Automated Pre- and Post-Processing of Offshore Structure Global Strength Finite Element Analysis

Offshore structure global strength analysis based on finite element plate model is a requirement for today’s classification societies and designers. Wave, wind, current loads have to be applied to the global strength model as a pre processing step to allow the analysis to take place. After the analysis, code checking must be performed to verify if the structure meets class or other requirements. Due to its complex nature, a large amount of engineering hours have to be spent for the pre and post processing. This is not only lengthy if performed manually or semi-automatically, but also mistake prone. General guidelines from classification societies exist, but general purpose commercial software is scarce and often still requires significant amount of engineering time to perform these tasks. This paper shows a rational approach to automate the pre and post processing of offshore structure global strength finite element analysis. Utilizing the FEMAP Application Program Interface (API), a complete automatic pre and post processing is implemented in one integrated program, Exmar Design Suite (EDS). The program will load the model from WAMIT generated wave pressure, apply internal pressure induced from motions to internal tanks, and also apply other environmental loads. After the finite element analysis, the program can execute strength code checking including yielding and buckling for the model. Both beam and stiffened plate panels can be identified using an automatic search algorithm, which is not a function available for general finite element software. The panels and beams are then checked against various common codes such as API/AISC/ABS/DNV. In addition, fatigue analysis can also be performed in either spectral or simplified approach. The benefits of automation are timesaving, accuracy and reliability. It also makes the check of whole model possible. Instead of relying more on “screening” or experience based structure check, engineers will have more confidence in the results by going through the whole model.

Railways can transport cargo and persons a great distance. The combination of high axle loads, and the rigid wheels and rails made of steel results in high stresses at the wheel-rail contact. These high stresses cause rolling contact fatigue. To prevent and to forecast the rolling contact fatigue, the knowledge of the stresses and their effect on the local damage are important. One possible way to achieve results of the stresses is based on a finite element analysis. The calculation of the rolling contact fatigue is conducted subsequently. This paper will present one possibility to implement the damage calculation into a finite element software and use the post-processing to enable a fast assessment of rolling contact fatigue on the surface and the adjacent volume of a rail.

AbstractThe paper presents a novel manufacturing approach to fabricate origami based on 3D printing utilizing digital light processing. Specifically, we propose to leave part of the model uncured during the printing step, and then cure it in the post-processing step to set the shape in a folded configuration. While the cured regions in the first step try to regain their unfolded shape, the regions cured in the second step attempt to keep their folded shape. As a result, the final shape is obtained when both regions’ stresses reach equilibrium. Finite element analysis is performed in ANSYS to obtain the stress distribution on common hinge designs, demonstrating that the square-hinge has a lower maximum principal stress than elliptical and triangle hinges. Based on the square-hinge and rectangular cavity, two variables—the hinge width and the cavity height—are selected as principal variables to construct an empirical model with the final folding angle. In the end, experimental verification shows that the developed method is valid and reliable to realize the proposed deformation and 3D development of 2D hinges.

Verify the design of main stand fully comply with the technical requirements .In this paper, it provides the theoretical position of split casting and welding method using electric slag welding.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is mature technology that has been in use for several decades as a tool to optimize structures for a wide variety of applications. Its application to composite structures is not new, however the technology for modeling and analyzing the behavior of composite structures continues to evolve on several fronts. This paper provides a review of the current state-of-the-art with regard to composites FEA, with a particular emphasis on applications to yacht structures. Topics covered are divided into three categories: Pre-processing; Postprocessing; and Non-linear Solutions. Pre-processing topics include meshing, ply properties, laminate definitions, element orientations, global ply tracking and load case development. Post-processing topics include principal stresses, failure indices and strength ratios. Nonlinear solution topics include progressive ply failure. Examples are included to highlight the application of advanced finite element analysis methodologies to the optimization of composite yacht structures.

Inner vessel in reactor assembly of sodium cooled fast reactor separates hot and cold pool sodium. The shape of inner vessel is optimized with reduced upper & lower shell diameters and toroidal redan for future Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR). This results in higher buckling strength and reduced thickness and hence reduced weight. To achieve the intricate toroidal shape with specified dimensional tolerances, a comprehensive technology development exercise was carried out successfully for the manufacture of inner vessel 30° sector. The achieved profile of the redan meets the specified dimensions and other design requirements. Spring-back observed in the sector was small. To verify the developmental exercise results, a finite element analysis (FEA) of forming of inner vessel sector was performed on finite element software ABAQUS. In this paper, FEA results and spring back are discussed. Spring back assessed is maximum at the center and relatively lower towards the edges for the redan with the chosen radius of 5980 mm.

Uncertainty modelling with random variables motivates the adoption of advanced PTM for reliability analysis to solve problems of mechanical systems. Probabilistic transformation method (PTM) is readily applicable when the function between the input and the output of the system is explicit. When these functions are implicit, a technique is proposed that combines finite element analysis (FEA) and probabilistic transformation method (PTM) that is based on the numerical simulations of the finite element analysis (FEA) and the probabilistic transformation method (PTM) using an interface between finite element software and Matlab. Structure problems are treated with the proposed technique, and the obtained results are compared to those obtained by the reference Monte Carlo method. A second aim of this work is to develop an algorithm of global optimization using the local method SQP. The proposed approach MSQP is tested on test functions comparing with other methods, and it is used to resolve a structural problem under reliability constraints.

In this article, three small wind turbine blades of different materials were manufactured. Finite element analysis was carried out using finite element software ANSYS 14.5 on modeled blades of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 4412 airfoil profile. From finite element analysis, first, two flap-wise natural frequencies and mode shapes of three different blades are obtained. Experimental vibration analysis of manufactured blades was carried out using fast Fourier transform analyzer to find the first two flap-wise natural frequencies. Finally, the results obtained from the finite element analysis and experimental test of three blades are compared. Based on vibration analysis, we found that the natural frequency of glass fiber reinforced plastic blade reinforced with aluminum sheet metal (small) strips increases compared with the remaining blades. An increase in the natural frequency indicates an increase in the stiffness of blade.

To ensure the safe use of single shear hydraulic lift platform for processing and manufacturing railway vehicles. This paper analyzes the use conditions of single shear hydraulic lift platform, and makes a contact nonlinear finite element analysis on various typical use conditions. The positions of parts subject to danger can be found out through the results of static strength analysis, which finds out the weaknesses and prejudges the failure trend of parts, and which provides guidance for prejudging the faults in actual production and can prevent occurrence of accidents.
