A New Concept in Design of Rheolytic Thrombectomy Devices: The Coanda Effect

The Coanda effect, which was first named by Henri Coanda in 1910, is the phenomenon when a fluid, gas or liquid, attaches to a solid surface, called the Coanda surface. The direction of this adhered flow changes along with the surface because of the Van der Walls forces or surface tension. Therefore, the pressure distribution of the ambient fluid is also altered due to the bent attached Coanda flow. The fluid material properties, Coanda flow velocity, curvature of the Coanda surface, velocity of the ambient fluid flow, and distance to the wall above the Coanda flow are the primary factors affecting this pressure distribution. In experimental studies, Panitz and Wasan [1] evaluated the pressure distribution of the Coanda effect by using pressure sensors on the Coanda surface and a colored dye solution in the flow. By means of photographs and experimental data, they describe the influence of different heights of the shroud (a sheath plate above the Coanda surface) and the secondary flow entrainment (flow of ambient fluid) on the pressure profiles. Vortices occur beneath the Coanda flow when the height of the shroud is lower than a specified reference. Cutbill et al. [2] developed a high speed Coanda flow k-ε turbulence model in the application of PHOENICS to improve the prediction of the mixing rate, shock wave structure and flow separation. The pressure drop occurs near the Coanda surface in both experimental and computational prediction results.

Abstract As a result of the Coanda effect, a symmetrical free jet will flow as an asymmetrical wall jet. At the same time, at the obstacle along which the flow is observed, the wall jet generates pressure distribution. In this study, the obstacle located at the diffuser outlet is a flat plate with a variable inclination angle. The article presents results of the study on pressure distributions on a flat plate with a variable angle of inclination. What is new, however, is that the presented results of the experimental research include the influence of the Coanda effect hysteresis on the pressure distribution on the plate. The article shows how pressure distributions change on the plate depending on whether the initial angle of inclination was 0 degree and was increased gradually in the course of the experiment until a detachment of the jet flowing from the plate was observed, or the initial angle of inclination was close to 90 degrees in the primal state and as the angle of the plate inclination was decreased, the jet flowing towards the plate reached the state of attachment to the plate surface.

In the present work it is performed a numerical study for simulation of turbulent air and water flows in a nozzle based on the Coanda effect named H.O.M.E.R. (High-Speed Orienting Momentum with Enhanced Reversibility). The main purposes of this work are the development of a numerical model for simulation of the main operational principle of the H.O.M.E.R. nozzle, verify the occurrence of the physical principle in a device using water as working fluid and generate theoretical recommendations about the influence of the difference of mass flow rate in two inlets and length of septum over the fluid dynamic behavior of water flow. The time-averaged conservation equations of mass and momentum are solved with the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and turbulence closure is tackled with the k-ε model. Results for air flow show a good agreement with previous predictions in the literature. Moreover, it is also noticed that this main operational principle is promising for future applications in maneuverability and propulsion systems in marine applications. Results obtained here also show that water jets present higher deflection angles when compared with air jets, enhancing the capability of impose forces to achieve better maneuverability. Moreover, results indicated that the imposition of different mass flow rates in both inlets of the device, as well as central septum insertion have a strong influence over deflection angle of turbulent jet flow and velocity fields, indicating that these parameters can be important for maneuverability in marine applications.

On the basis of the obtained analytical dependencies, the expediency of fan loading of bunkers with powdery bulk material has been proved. The design of an annular charging device, which reduces dust formation, using the Coanda effect is proposed. The rational design and technological parameters of the developed device are numerically and experimentally determined.

Despite the numerous theoretical and experimental studies carried out throughout the years, the use of the Coanda effect in the propulsion-related field definitely remains one of the most current discussion topics since no definite conclusion has been drawn yet regarding the capabilities, applications and performances of the devices based on the Coanda effect. The present paper sets out to present the theoretical quantitative and qualitative aspects of the most important uses of the Coanda phenomenon, including the author’s own interpretations and ideas.

Abstract The contact pressure distribution and the rolling resistance of a running radial tire under load are fundamental properties of the tire construction, important to the steering performance of automobiles, as is well known. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been previously published on these tire properties. However, the relationships between tire performances in service and tire structural properties have not been clarified sufficiently due to analytical and experimental difficulties. In this paper, establishing a spring support ring model made of a composite belt ring and a Voigt type viscoelastic spring system of the sidewall and the tread rubber, we analyze the one-dimensional contact pressure distribution of a running tire at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The predicted distribution of the contact pressure under appropriate values of damping coefficients of rubber is shown to be in good agreement with experimental results. It is confirmed by this study that increasing velocity causes the pressure to rise at the leading edge of the contact patch, accompanied by the lowered pressure at the trailing edge, and further a slight movement of the contact area in the forward direction.

Sensing pressure at the physical interface between the robot and the human has important implications for wearable robots. On the one hand, monitoring pressure distribution can give valuable benefits on the aspects of comfortability and safety of such devices. Additionally, on the other hand, they can be used as a rich sensory input to high level interaction controllers. However, a problem is that the commercial availability of this technology is mostly limited to either low-cost solutions with poor performance or expensive options, limiting the possibilities for iterative designs. As an alternative, in this manuscript we present a three-dimensional (3D) printed flexible capacitive pressure sensor that allows seamless integration for wearable robotic applications. The sensors are manufactured using additive manufacturing techniques, which provides benefits in terms of versatility of design and implementation. In this study, a characterization of the 3D printed sensors in a test-bench is presented after which the sensors are integrated in an upper arm interface. A human-in-the-loop calibration of the sensors is then shown, allowing to estimate the external force and pressure distribution that is acting on the upper arm of seven human subjects while performing a dynamic task. The validation of the method is achieved by means of a collaborative robot for precise force interaction measurements. The results indicate that the proposed sensors are a potential solution for further implementation in human–robot interfaces.

Uncertainties inherent in gate-opening speeds are rarely studied in dam-break flow experiments due to the laborious experimental procedures required. For the stochastic analysis of these mechanisms, this study involved 290 flow tests performed in a dam-break flume via varying gate speeds between 0.20 and 2.50 m/s; four pressure sensors embedded in the flume bed recorded high-frequency bottom pressures. The obtained data were processed to determine the statistical relationships between gate speed and maximum pressure. The correlations between them were found to be particularly significant at the sensors nearest to the gate (Ch1) and farthest from the gate (Ch4), with a Pearson’s coefficient r of 0.671 and −0.524, respectively. The interquartile range (IQR) suggests that the statistical variability of maximum pressure is the largest at Ch1 and smallest at Ch4. When the gate is opened faster, a higher pressure with greater uncertainty occurs near the gate. However, both the pressure magnitude and the uncertainty decrease as the dam-break flow propagates downstream. The maximum pressure appears within long-period surge-pressure phases; however, instances considered as statistical outliers appear within short and impulsive pressure phases. A few unique phenomena, which could cause significant bottom pressure variability, were also identified through visual analyses using high-speed camera images. For example, an explosive water jet increases the vertical acceleration immediately after the gate is lifted, thereby retarding dam-break flow propagation. Owing to the existence of sidewalls, two edge waves were generated, which behaved similarly to ship wakes, causing a strong horizontal mixture of the water flow.

The ballasted track superstructure is characterized by a relative quick deterioration of track geometry due to ballast settlements and the accumulation of sleeper voids. The track zones with the sleeper voids differ from the geometrical irregularities with increased dynamic loading, high vibration, and unfavorable ballast-bed and sleeper contact conditions. This causes the accelerated growth of the inhomogeneous settlements, resulting in maintenance-expensive local instabilities that influence transportation reliability and availability. The recent identification and evaluation of the sleeper support conditions using track-side and on-board monitoring methods can help planning prevention activities to avoid or delay the development of local instabilities such as ballast breakdown, white spots, subgrade defects, etc. The paper presents theoretical and experimental studies that are directed at the development of the methods for sleeper support identification. The distinctive features of the dynamic behavior in the void zone compared to the equivalent geometrical irregularity are identified by numeric simulation using a three-beam dynamic model, taking into account superstructure and rolling stock dynamic interaction. The spectral features in time domain in scalograms and scattergrams are analyzed. Additionally, the theoretical research enabled to determine the similarities and differences of the dynamic interaction from the viewpoint of track-side and on-board measurements. The method of experimental investigation is presented by multipoint track-side measurements of rail-dynamic displacements using high-speed video records and digital imaging correlation (DIC) methods. The method is used to collect the statistical information from different-extent voided zones and the corresponding reference zones without voids. The applied machine learning methods enable the exact recent void identification using the wavelet scattering feature extraction from track-side measurements. A case study of the method application for an on-board measurement shows the moderate results of the recent void identification as well as the potential ways of its improvement.

AbstractThe determination of structural loads plays an important role in the certification process of new aircraft. Strain gauges are usually used to measure and monitor the structural loads encountered during the flight test program. However, a time-consuming wiring and calibration process is required to determine the forces and moments from the measured strains. Sensors based on MEMS provide an alternative way to determine loads from the measured aerodynamic pressure distribution around the structural component. Flight tests were performed with a research glider aircraft to investigate the flight loads determined with the strain based and the pressure based measurement technology. A wing glove equipped with 64 MEMS pressure sensors was developed for measuring the pressure distribution around a selected wing section. The wing shear force determined with both load determination methods were compared to each other. Several flight maneuvers with varying loads were performed during the flight test program. This paper concentrates on the evaluation of dynamic flight maneuvers including Stalls and Pull-Up Push-Over maneuvers. The effects of changes in the aerodynamic flow characteristics during the maneuver could be detected directly with the pressure sensors based on MEMS. Time histories of the measured pressure distributions and the wing shear forces are presented and discussed.
