Do Irish Adolescents Have Adequate Functional Movement Skill and Confidence?

Recent research has shown that post-primary Irish youth are insufficiently active and fail to reach a level of proficiency across basic fundamental movement skills. The purpose of the current research was to gather cross-sectional data on adolescent youth, differentiated by gender, specifically to inform the development of a targeted movement-oriented intervention. Data were collected on adolescents (N = 219; mean age : 14.45 ± 0.96 years), within two, mixed-gender schools. Data collection included actual and perceived movement measurements comprised of fundamental movement skills, the functional movement screen, perceived movement confidence, and perceived functional confidence. Overall, levels of actual mastery within fundamental and functional movement were low, with significant gender differences observed. Adolescent males scored higher in the overall fundamental movement skill domain (male mean score = 70.87 ± 7.05; female mean score = 65.53 ± 7.13), yet lower within the functional movement screen (male mean score = 13.58 ± 2.59), in comparison to their female counterparts (female mean score = 14.70 ± 2.16). There were high levels of perceived confidence reported within fundamental and functional movement scales. Future intervention strategies should combat the low levels of actual movement skill proficiency, while identifying the reasons for higher perceived movement confidence within adolescents.

AbstractThis study investigates motor fitness (MF), fundamental movement skills (FMS), and functional movement screen (FMS™) in 7-10-year-old children, and evaluates the relationship between FMS , MF and FMS™ combination with Seefeldt’s model for empirical research, thus to present effective strategies of physical development in children. A class was randomly selected in four school grades (1-4) along with 30 students from each to take the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2). A total of 117 children (42 girls, aged 7-10) participated in three tests: TGMD-2, MF tests, and FMS™. MF levels (good, fair, and poor) and FMS™ levels (high, moderate, and low) were classified according to specific percentile ranges. A multiple (R×C) chi-square test analysis of the relationship between MF, FMS, and FMS™ was applied and post hoc testing estimated the possibility of FMS and FMS™ predicting MF. The results showed that only 43% of children were rated “good” on MF. Most fourth-grade students exhibited a certain gap with mature FMS (TGMD-2 score 70.13±9.68< 96 full scores). Boys scored significantly higher on the object control subtest and the TGMD-2 total score compared to girls (p<0.001), while girls had a significantly greater score than boys on the FMS™ (p=0.001). The results of multiple chi-square demonstrated FMS to be weakly correlated with MF, χ2 (4,N=117) =14.605, p =0.006< 0.01, Cramer’s V = 0.25. Both 60.5% of “excellent” FMS and 59.6% of “high” FMS™ children were categorized as having a “good” MF level. On the other hand, only 23.1% of the “worst” FMS and 24.3% of “low” FMS™ individuals were classified as having a “good” MF level. Our results suggest that MF, FMS, FMS™ are relatively independent systems linking with each other, generating mutual interaction in children’s motor development. At different stages or different advantages of them motor development, we may emphasize training one or a few parts.

Irish adolescents have been found to possess high perceptions of motor competence. However, there is an evidential value to investigating the strength of the relationship between adolescent perceptions of motor competence and their low levels of actual motor competence. The purpose of this research was to gather data on the fundamental, functional, and perceived motor competence in adolescents, differentiated by year group, to discern if participants could assess their perceptions of ability. Data were collected on adolescents (N = 373; mean age: 14.38 ± 0.87 years; 47.7% female) across six second-level schools in Ireland, including measurements of fundamental movement skills, functional movement, and perceived motor competence. Poor levels of fundamental and functional movement were observed, with significant differences between year groups detected. Participants in 1st year scored the highest in overall fundamental movement skills; however, for overall functional movement, 3rd-year participants scored highest. High levels of perceived motor competence were reported across the entire sample. These scores did not align with actual motor competence, nor did any alignment between these measurements improve with aging, countering theorized age-related associations. Future research should target low levels of actual motor competence while emphasizing the cognitive aspects of movement to ensure greater accuracy between actual and perceived motor competence.

Little is known of how reallocations of time spent in different movement behaviors during preschool might relate to preschoolers’ fundamental movement skills (FMS), a key predictor of later physical activity (PA). Thus, the aim of this study was to examine (a) whether preschoolers’ school-time movement was associated with their FMS and (b) the effects on FMS of reallocating time between PA and sedentary behavior (SB). This was a cross-sectional study, using intervention data with Brazilian low-income preschoolers. We observed Brazilian preschoolers of both sexes ( Mage = 4.5, SD = 0.8 years-old; 101boys) over 10 hours of school-time and objectively assessed their PA and SB with Actigraph wGT3X and their FMS with the Test of Gross Motor Development – Second Edition. We explored the associations between school-time movement behaviors and FMS and between reallocated school-time movement behaviors and FES using compositional analysis in R (version 1.40-1), robCompositions (version 0.92-7), and lmtest (version 0.9-35) packages. This isotemporal reallocation showed that, for manipulative skills, reallocating time (5, 10, and 15 minutes, respectively) from light PA to SB was associated with increasing skill (0.14, 0.28, and 0.42 FMS units), raising questions as to whether fine motor activity occurred during SB. Thus, school-time movement significantly predicted FMS, with a modest increase in SB, at the expense of light PA eliciting improved manipulative skills.

Context: The deep squat (DS) test is a component of the functional movement screen, which is used to assess the quality of fundamental movement patterns; however, the accuracy of the DS has not been studied. The DS is a complex, total body movement pattern with evaluation required at several points along the kinematic chain. Objective: To assess the accuracy of DS scoring by an athletic trainer, physical therapist, and exercise science professional via a comparative analysis with kinematic data (KD) and to identify scoring criteria that would improve agreement between raters and KD scores. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Motion analysis laboratory. Participants: A rater from each of 3 movement science disciplines rated the DS of 23 male college athletes (20.3 [1.2] y; 70.5 [3.5] kg). Interventions: Subjects were outfitted with reflective markers and asked to perform the DS. The DS performance was scored by 3 raters and kinematic analysis. Subsequently, the optimal set of criteria that minimized the difference between mode rater score and KD was determined via a Nelder–Mead simplex optimization routine. Main Outcome Measures: Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated using SPSS (version 23; IBM, Armonk, NY) to determine tester agreement with the KD score and between the mode score and KD score. Results: Agreement was poor for the athletic trainer (ICC = .387), physical therapist (ICC = .298), exercise science professional (ICC = .378), and raters’ DS scores when compared with the KD. Agreement was poor for the mode score when compared with KD prior to optimization and good following optimization (ICC = .830), thereby allowing identification of specific scoring errors. Conclusions: Agreement for DS scores is poor when compared with KD; however, it may be improved with optimization of DS scoring criteria.

Preschoolers with developmental delay (DD) are at risk for poor fundamental movement skills (FMS), but a paucity of early FMS interventions exist. The purpose of this review was to critically appraise the existing interventions to establish direction for future trials targeting preschoolers with DD. A total of 11 studies met the inclusion criteria. Major findings were summarized based on common subtopics of overall intervention effect, locomotor skill outcomes, object-control outcomes, and gender differences. Trials ranged from 8 to 24 weeks and offered 540–1700 min of instruction. The majority of trials (n = 9) significantly improved FMS of preschoolers with DD, with a large intervention effect (η2 = 0.57–0.85). This review supports the utility of interventions to improve FMS of preschoolers with DD. Future researchers are encouraged to include more robust designs, a theoretical framework, and involvement of parents and teachers in the delivery of the intervention.

  Objetivo: Valorar la calidad de movimiento aplicando el Functional Movement Screen (FMS) en adolescentes de 12 a 17 años practicantes o no de Gimnasia Acrobática (GA). Método: Estudio descriptivo, comparativo y transversal donde participaron 41 adolescentes (20 practicantes de GA y 21 no practicantes). Se usó la batería FMS, compuesta por siete pruebas: sentadilla profunda, paso de valla, estocada en línea, movilidad de hombro, elevación activa de la pierna recta, estabilidad del tronco en flexiones, estabilidad rotatoria del tronco. Resultados: se observó una relación estadísticamente significativa de signo positivo a través del estadístico R de Spearman, entre la puntuación global del FMS y la práctica de GA (p= .023). Las gimnastas presentan mejor calidad de movimiento que las no practicantes, con diferencias estadísticamente significativas, puntuando mejor en prácticamente todas las pruebas. Conclusión: se corrobora una relación entre la práctica de GA y una mayor puntuación del FMS.  Abstract. Objective: To assess the quality of movement by applying the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to teenagers aged 12 to 17, whether or not they practice Acrobatic Gymnastics (AG). Methods: Descriptive, comparative and cross-sectional study in which 41 teenagers (20 AG practitioners and 21 non-practitioners) participated. The FMS battery was used, consisting of seven tests: deep squat, fence step, line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight leg lift, trunk stability in bending, trunk rotation stability. Results: a statistically significant positive relationship was observed through Spearman's R statistic, between the overall FMS score and the AG practice (p= .023). Gymnasts presented better quality of movement than non-gymnastics practitioners, with statistically significant differences, scoring better in practically all tests. Conclusion: a relationship between AG practice and a higher FMS score is corroborated.

Two hundred and four preschoolers of both sexes (4.5±0.8 years-old; 101boys) provided 10 hours of school-time objectively assessed PA and sedentary behaviour (SB) data (Actigraph wGT3X), and FMS assessments (TGMD-2). Association of school-time composition of movement behaviuors with FMS and its reallocations during school-time was explored using compositional analysis in R (version 1.40-1), robCompositions (version 0.92-7), and lmtest (version 0.9-35) packages. <b>RESULTS:</b> The isotemporal reallocation showed that for manipulative skills, an increasing pattern was observed (0.14, 0.28, and 0.42-units) when reallocating 5, 10 and 15 minutes, respectively, from light PA to SB. <b>CONCLUSIONS:</b> The current study highlights that school-time composition is a significant predictor of FMS. Moreover, a modest increase in SB, at the expense of LPA, during the school-time may elicit a positive change in manipulative skills. </p>

The aim of this study was to quantify levels of physical activity (PA) and fundamental movement skills (FMS) of children aged 3 to 5 years in Irish preschool services during care hours, and investigate the relationship between these two variables. Data were collected from 141 children (50.3% boys, age M = 3.9 ± 0.5 years) across 9 preschool services. Measurements included PA via accelerometry, and proficiency in four FMS (run, vertical jump, throw and catch). The recommended guideline of 15 minutes of PA per hour (min PA/hour) was met by 35% of children (M = 13.6 min PA/hour). Significant differences in mean PA per hour were found by gender, with boys (14.2 min PA/hour) more active than girls (13.0 min PA/ hour), and age, with younger children (14.2 min PA/hour) more active than older (12.6 minutes PA/hour). Percentage of children proficient in the run was high (88.4%), but low across the other skills (4.9%–18.5%). Significant differences were identified by gender for vertical jump with girls scoring higher than boys. No significant relationship was found between FMS and total PA. Low levels of PA and FMS proficiency highlight need for intervention in early years settings to ensure children develop skills to participate in PA.

Abstract Background Several studies have evaluated the applicability of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) as a screening tool for injury prediction. However, only few studies investigate gender differences for FMS as a screening tool for female and male college students. Objective To evaluate gender differences in FMS single items and the overall score. In addition, the applicability of FMS as a diagnostic tool for injury prevention of German exercise students will be investigated. Method N = 99 college students performed an FMS at the beginning of the semester. Injuries were recorded for the entire term. Gender differences of FMS single items were assessed using the Mann-Whitney-U-Test. Differences in injury prediction were calculated using logistic regression. If the model was statistically significant, diagnostic accuracy was calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the curve (AUC). The Youden index was used to identify a cut-off score. 2 × 2 contingency tables, sensitivity and specifity, positive/negative predictive values, and likelihood ratios were assessed. Results There were significant gender differences for Deep Squat, Shoulder Mobility, Trunk Stability Push Up, and Active Straight Leg Raise. The logistic regression showed that the composite score was statistically significant in clarifying the model for females (p = 0.005, RN 2 = 0.14), but not for males (p = 0.18, RN 2 = 0.04). The ROC curve indicated acceptable injury prediction in females (AUC: 0.66, p = 0.02) and poor injury prediction in males (AUC: 0.40, p = 0.19). The cut-off score of ≤ 16 for females resulted in a sensitivity of 63 % and specificity of 54 %. No cut-off score was calculated for males. Conclusion Females performed better on flexibility items, while males scored higher on strength exercises. Results of the study indicate low predictive accuracy. Therefore, no solid recommendation can be made for the use of the FMS as an injury screening tool for either female or male German exercise science students.

Background: Through play, children develop motor, cognitive, social, and other life skills. Play barriers can impede physical and psychosocial benefits. Objectives: We describe participation in active play, fundamental movement skills, play environment characteristics, and potential play barriers for school-aged children (6–12 years) who use lower extremity prostheses. Study design: Cross-sectional questionnaire study. Methods: A questionnaire was developed and administered online to parents of children 6–12 years who use lower extremity prostheses. Questions focused on children’s valued play activities, participation in active play, fundamental movement skills, body positions for play, and characteristics of play environments. Results: Parents (n = 26) reported their children who use lower extremity prostheses participated in a range of activities including active play (e.g. playgrounds, swimming). Fundamental movement skill limitations were identified (e.g. walking long distances, running fast, hopping on one foot, and skipping). Mobility limitations with floor positions, movement transitions, and uneven or sloped surfaces were reported. Active play with equipment such as roller skating, climbing structures, and bicycling presented challenges. Conclusion: Parents of children who use lower extremity prostheses reported participation restrictions associated with mobility limitations, activity type, and built environment characteristics (e.g. surfaces and equipment). Challenges made it difficult for children who use lower extremity prostheses to keep up with peers in schools and communities. Clinical relevance Understanding potential barriers to participation in active play of children who use lower extremity prostheses may contribute to enhanced prosthetic design, rehabilitation strategies, universal design of play and built environments, and improved outcome measures ultimately enabling these children to participate fully in active play in diverse contexts.
