The purpose was to compare the effectiveness of practice progressions on learning the volleyball serve and overhead set. Ninth-grade students were randomly assigned to three groups. Each group practiced the volleyball serve and set for 60 trials over 6 days. The progression group practiced four levels of difficulty of the set and serve. The criterion group began practice at the beginning level of difficulty and had to achieve an 80% success rate before practicing at a more advanced level. The third group practiced the AAHPERD volleyball skill tests for the serve and set for all 60 trials. At the end of practice, all subjects were posttested using these AAHPERD tests. The results indicated the progression and criterion groups had higher posttest scores than the third group. Profiles of the success rates across acquisition for each group showed that students in the third group and low-skilled students in the progression and criterion groups did not improve during practice. Students with some initial skill in the progression and criterion groups exhibited high success rates for acquisition and improvement. These results indicate that sequencing practice in progressive levels of difficulty enhances retention when task difficulty is appropriate for the learner. However, no condition was effective when task difficulty was inappropriate for the learner.

This study examined algebra students' understanding of equivalent equations. Ninety-eight eighth- and ninth-grade students were presented with pairs of equations and asked to judge whether the equations in each pair were equivalent. The students were also asked to justify their answers. The responses fell into three major groups: computed solutions, judgments based on transformations of equations, and incorrect solutions. Most of the students consistently gave justifications from one group. Children who gave reasons based on transformations had a significantly higher rate of correct responses than the children who calculated solutions. In the incorrect group, the success rate was much lower than in the other two groups. Most students in the transformations group were able to transfer their knowledge to transformations not used in solving equations.

Introduction: Unfortunately, the most important consideration that is ignored in evaluation of the success rate of IANB technique is the teaching and learning of the correct injection technique in the academic atmosphere of universities and during the study period. Only a limited number of studies have evaluated this matter. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the success rate of the IANB technique administrated by dental students in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in order to promote the dental educational programs. Materials and Methods: The subjects in the present consisted of patients referring to the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Tabriz Faculty of Dentistry, who required surgery in the lower jaw. The dental students evaluated in the present study consisted of the third-, fourth- and fifth-year students who were selected randomly. A total of 30 patients underwent a local anesthetic technique by the third-, fourth- and fifth-year dental students each. Anesthetic agent cartridges containing 1.8 mL of 2% lidocaine with adrenalin were used for the local anesthetic technique. The success of the anesthetic technique was analyzed 2 and 5 minutes after injection with the use of an electric pulp tester (EPT). In addition, the severity of pain was tested with the use of VAS. Results: there was no significant difference in the success rate of the IANB technique between male and female students. Comparison of the success rate of the IANB technique between the third-, fourth- and fifth-year dental students showed no significant differences in response to EPT, perception of pain and feeling of the dental explorer between the three groups of students. However, the frequency of the success rate of the IANB technique showed that the success rates were 86.3%, 93.3% and 83.3% for the third-, fourth- and fifth-year dental students, respectively. Discussion: the success of this technique has been reported to be low in references for some reasons. In this context, unfortunately the most important fact that is not taken into account in the evaluation of the reasons for the failure of the IANB technique is the teaching and learning of the correct technique in universities and during university studies and only a limited number of studies have evaluated it. Conclusion: Previous studies have reported a 70% success rate for the IANB technique administrated by dental students; however, the results of the present study showed a success rates >70 for this technique administered by the third-, fourth- and fifth-year dental students in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. The discrepancy between the results might indicate the important role of proper education in decreasing the failure rate of this technique.

This research was a classroom action research (CAR). The objective of this research was to find out students’ vocabulary mastery especially its application in a correct sentence pattern by using Word Wall method to the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Mamuju. This research consisted of three cycles. There were 30 students in one class that followed this research. The result showed there was improvement of the students’ vocabulary. It could be seen on their average score in the first cycle improved by 49.25%, from the diagnostic test 34.83%. Then, it improved more in the second cycle by 60.8% and more in the third cycle that achieves 68.25%. However, despite getting the students’ average score improved, after applying the three cycles, it is still not success achieving the Minimum Completeness Criteria (MCC) of the subject that was 75.

This article focuses on the decision-making processes involved in research and knowledge integration in translation processes. First, the relevance of decision taking intranslation is discussed. Second, the psychology of decision making as seen by Jungermann et al. (2005) is introduced, who propose a categorization of decision-making processes intofour types: “routinized”, “stereotype”, “reflected” and “constructed”. This classification is then applied to the translations by five professional translators and five novices of five segments occurring in a popular-science text. The analysis reveals that the decision-making types are distributed differently among students and professional translators, which also has to be seen against the background of whether the decisions made were successful or not. The preliminary results of this study show that students resort to reflected decisions in most cases, but with a low success rate. Professionals achieve a higher success rate when making reflected decisions. As expected, they also make more routinized decisions than students. The professionals’ success rates improve with increasing cognitive involvement, while their failure rates are relatively high when making routinized decisions, an aspect worthwhile considering in translation didactics.

When we play competitive games, the opponents that we face act as predictors of the outcome of the game. For instance, if you are an average chess player and you face a Grandmaster, you anticipate a loss. Framed in a reinforcement learning perspective, our opponents can be thought of as predictors of rewards and punishments. The present study investigates whether facing an opponent would be processed as a reward or punishment depending on the level of difficulty the opponent poses. Participants played Rock, Paper, Scissors against three computer opponents while electroencephalographic (EEG) data was recorded. In a key manipulation, one opponent (HARD) was programmed to win most often, another (EASY) was made to lose most often, and the third (AVERAGE) had equiprobable outcomes of wins, losses, and ties. Through practice, participants learned to anticipate the relative challenge of a game based on the opponent they were facing that round. An analysis of our EEG data revealed that winning outcomes elicited a reward positivity relative to losing outcomes. Interestingly, our analysis of the predictive cues (i.e., the opponents’ faces) demonstrated that attentional engagement (P3a) was contextually sensitive to anticipated game difficulty. As such, our results for the predictive cue are contrary to what one might expect for a reinforcement model associated with predicted reward, but rather demonstrate that the neural response to the predictive cue was encoding the level of engagement with the opponent as opposed to value relative to the anticipated outcome.

Abstract Background Gastrointestinal tumor bleeding remains a clinical challenge because it is difficult to treat with conventional endoscopic hemostatic options. Recently, an endoscopic hemostatic powder (UI-EWD) was developed and reported to provide effective control of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The aim of current study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of this novel hemostatic powder in tumor bleeding. Methods A total of 41 consecutive patients with upper gastrointestinal tumor bleeding were included. UI-EWD was applied in all patients as an auxiliary hemostatic method as a salvage therapy or monotherapy during endoscopic treatment. Hemostasis success rates, adverse event related to UI-EWD, and rates of re-bleeding were evaluated. Results In all cases, UI-EWD application was successful at tumor bleeding sites. Immediate hemostasis occurred in 40/41 (97.5%) patients, and re-bleeding within 28 days occurred in 10 of 40 (22.5%) patients that achieved initial hemostasis. The success rate of immediate hemostasis for UI-EWD monotherapy was 100% (23/23). The re-bleeding rate at 28 days after UI-EWD monotherapy was 26.1% (6/23). No adverse events associated with UI-EWD application were encountered. Conclusions The success rate of UI-EWD for immediate hemostasis in cases of GI tumor bleeding was excellent and UI-EWD produced promising results with respect to the prevention of re-bleeding. Based on these results, we suggest that UI-EWD be considered an effective salvage therapy or even monotherapy for GI tumor bleeding.

AbstractThis article reports on a case study that aims to help students develop mechanistic reasoning through constructing a model based stop-motion animation of a physical phenomenon. Mechanistic reasoning is a valuable thinking strategy for students in trying to make sense of scientific phenomena. Ten ninth-grade students used stop-motion software to create an animation of projectile motion. Retrospective think-aloud interviews were conducted to investigate how the construction of a stop-motion animation induced the students’ mechanistic reasoning. Mechanistic reasoning did occur while the students engaged in creating the animation, in particular chunking and sequencing. Moreover, all students eventually exhibited mechanistic reasoning including abstract concepts, e.g., not directly observable agents. Students who reached the highest level of mechanistic reasoning, i.e., chaining, demonstrated deeper conceptual understanding of content.

Abstract Aim This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess this relationship and determine the most appropriate age for recommendation of surgery. Method According to the “Preferred Reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis” (PRISMA) statement, a literature search was performed across Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane library from 1946-2018. Articles examining a relationship between age and myringoplasty or type 1 tympanoplasty success rates were screened. Results 20 articles encompassing data from 2244 procedures were included. The overall results conveyed a clear correlation between increasing age and rising success rate. A t-test was conducted which demonstrated a significant (P = 0.05) transition at aged 10, whereby success rate below age 10 was 70.6% and above 10 was 86%. Conclusions This systematic review and meta-analysis has uncovered a clear correlation between increasing age and increasing success rate for myringoplasty in the paediatric population. Furthermore, a significant transitional point has been demonstrated at the age of 10 and We hope that knowledge of increased success rates particularly after the age of 10 helps clinicians make more informed decisions about when to operate

BackgroundIt is generally recommended to keep the wrist joint mildly dorsiflexed during radial artery catheterisation. However, wrist dorsiflexion might decrease the success rate of radial artery catheterisation with dynamic needle tip positioning technique. Therefore, we assessed the success rates of two groups with or without wrist dorsiflexion by 5 cm wrist elevation in adult patients.MethodsThis randomised controlled clinical trial was performed between March and December 2018 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College, China. We recruited 120 adult patients undergoing major surgical procedures and randomly allocated them into two groups: dorsiflexion group (group D) and neutral group (group N). The primary outcome was first-attempt success rates of two groups. Secondary outcomes were overall success rates within 5 min; numbers of insertion and cannulation attempts; overall catheterisation time; duration of localisation, insertion and cannulation; and complication rates of catheterisation.ResultsFirst-attempt success rate was 88.3% in group D and 81.7% in group N (p=0.444). The overall success rate within 5 min was 93.3% in group D compared with 90.0% in group N (p=0.743). Numbers of insertion and cannulation attempts, overall catheterisation time, duration of localisation and insertion, and complication rates did not show a significant difference between the two groups. Cannulation time was longer in group N (35.68 s) than that in group D (26.19 s; p<0.05).ConclusionWrist dorsiflexion may not be a necessity for ultrasound-guided radial artery catheterisation using dynamic needle tip positioning technique in adult patients.Trial registration numberChiCTR1800015262.

AbstractIn this article, we present the genomic DNA yield and the microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping success rates of genomic DNA extracted from a large number of mouth swab samples. In total, the median yield and quality was determined in 714 individuals and the success rates in 378,480 genotypings of 915 individuals. The median yield of genomic DNA per mouth swab was 4.1 μg (range 0.1–42.2 μg) and was not reduced when mouth swabs were stored for at least 21 months prior to extraction. A maximum of 20 mouth swabs is collected per participant. Mouth swab samples showed in, respectively, 89% for 390 microsatellites and 99% for 24 SNPs a genotyping success rate higher than 75%. A very low success rate of genotyping (0%–10%) was obtained for 3.2% of the 915 mouth swab samples using microsatellite markers. Only 0.005% of the mouth swab samples showed a geno-typing success rate lower than 75% (range 58%–71%) using SNPs. Our results show that mouth swabs can be easily collected, stored by our conditions for months prior to DNA extraction and result in high yield and high-quality DNA appropriate for genotyping with high success rate including whole genome searches using microsatellites or SNPs.
