In-Water Resisted Swim Training for Age-Group Swimmers: An Evaluation of Training Effects

Purpose:The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of resisted sprint swim training with that of nonresisted sprint swim training on 50-m freestyle competition time (Vmax50) in age-group swimmers.Methods:Twenty-four age-group swimmers (age 10.6–14.9 y) were divided into resisted or nonresisted sprint swim training groups and completed a sprint swim training intervention 2 times per week for 10 weeks. Repeated 10-m sprints with progressively increasing resistance were used to determine measures of swim power. Skeletal muscle mass was estimated using B-mode ultrasound. Maturity status was estimated using predicted adult height (%Htadult) and maturity offset.Results:A 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance revealed no group × time interaction for measured variables. Vmax50 was correlated with skeletal muscle mass and swim power variables, but no significant relationship was found between relative changes in these variables. Estimated maturity status (%Htadult) appeared to be associated with initial measures of swim power and performance variables.Conclusions:Ten weeks of resisted sprint swim training was not any more effective than nonresisted sprint swim training at improving sprint swim performance in age-group swimmers.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the combined effects of having sleep problems and taking sleeping pills on the skeletal muscle mass and performance of community-dwelling elders. A total of 826 participants who have complete information regarding dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry examination, questionnaire, and physical performance tests were included. The status of having sleep problems and taking sleeping pills was assessed with a self-reported questionnaire. The prevalence rates of sleep problems among older men and women were 37.4% and 54.5%, respectively. After multivariate adjustment, the mean height-adjusted skeletal muscle indices for elders having sleep problems and taking sleeping pills among men and women were 7.29 and 5.66 kg/m2, respectively, which were lower than those without sleep problems (P = 0.0021 and P = 0.0175). The performance of the older men having sleep problems and taking sleeping pills in terms of walking speed, grip strength, and number of squats, was poorer than those of the older men without sleep problems. The status of having sleep problems and taking sleeping pills was correlated with low skeletal muscle mass and poor physical performance in community-dwelling elders. These findings suggest that having sleep problems and taking sleeping pills are associated with having sarcopenia among community elderly.

Background: Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, represents a crucial risk factor for disability and mortality. Increasing intake of some nutrients, particularly protein and omega-3 fatty acids seems to be a promising strategy to augment muscle mass and function.Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the beneficial effects of fish consumption on muscle mass and function among middle-age and older adults.Methods: Twenty-two adults aged 50–85 years participated in this study. Participants were asked to consume 150–170-g of fish for lunch twice a week for a 10-week period. During that period, participants were asked to maintain their normal diet and physical activity. Outcome measures included anthropometry, muscle mass, and muscle function. All these measures were assessed at baseline, week 5, and week 10. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyze statistical significance.Results: Consuming fish twice a week for 10 weeks significantly increased the skeletal muscle mass and appendicular lean mass divided by height squared (ALM/h2) (p < 0.01). Handgrip strength and gait speed <0.8 m/s were also improved (p < 0.01) at week 10 compared with that at baseline.Discussion: Consuming fish seems to improve muscle mass and function and may slow sarcopenia progression in middle-age and older adults.

Abstract Introduction Muscle strength and muscle endurance are important fitness components related to safe and efficient execution of physically demanding military work. In soldiers, these components are traditionally measured from simple field tests like push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups. However, the validity of such muscle fitness field tests is questioned due to reports of low association between test performance and the ability to conduct strength demanding military work (eg, lift and carry tasks). It is therefore necessary to study, develop, and implement more valid field tests, which are still feasible for mass testing in the military. Skeletal muscle mass (SMM) is an important physiological component related to maximal muscle force generation (strength). Thus, an alternative way of validating muscle fitness field tests is by comparisons against SMM. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between SMM and performance in five muscle fitness field tests. Materials and Methods A total of 275 military cadets (including 27 women) participated in this method comparison study. The field tests included push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups (vertical for men, horizontal for women), standing medicine ball throw, and Sargent jump (peak power and jump height). SMM was estimated from bioelectrical impedance analysis and expressed in absolute values (kg) or relative to body mass. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were calculated to investigate associations between SMM and performance in the five field tests. The study was submitted to the Regional Committee for Medical and Health Research Ethics prior to startup, and the Committee considered the study to be exempted from notification. The study was reviewed and approved by the Norwegian Social Science Data Services. Results In men, the highest correlation against absolute SMM was found for the Sargent jump (peak power) and the medicine ball throw (r = 0.71 and 0.54, respectively). The same trend was evident for women (r = 0.85 and 0.61, respectively) and for the two genders combined (r = 0.85 and 0.79, respectively). All these r-values were significant (P < 0.001). In men, the highest r against relative SMM was found for pull-ups (r = 0.50, P < 0.001). The same pattern was found in women, but the association was not significant (r = 0.36, P = 0.07). The sit-ups test demonstrated low or nonsignificant associations with both absolute and relative SMM. Conclusions Among the five muscle fitness field tests investigated, the Sargent jump (peak power) and the medicine ball throw demonstrated the strongest correlation coefficients against absolute SMM. Thus, these two tests should be better alternatives for assessing relevant upper and lower body strength and power in soldiers compared with push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups. Pull-ups generally demonstrated the strongest correlation against relative SMM. Sit-ups demonstrated low or nonsignificant associations with both absolute and relative SMM. Consequently, the test should be considered for removal from military fitness test batteries or replaced by alternative abdominal tests that are more valid.
