ABSTRACTFed batch bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) based on electrical stimulation were used to treatp-fluoronitrobenzene (p-FNB) wastewater at high salinities. At a NaCl concentration of 40 g/liter,p-FNB was removed 100% in 96 h in the BES, whereas in the biotic control (BC) (absence of current),p-FNB removal was only 10%. By increasing NaCl concentrations from 0 g/liter to 40 g/liter, defluorination efficiency decreased around 40% in the BES, and in the BC it was completely ceased.p-FNB was mineralized by 30% in the BES and hardly in the BC. Microorganisms were able to store 3.8 and 0.7 times more K+and Na+intracellularly in the BES than in the BC. Following the same trend, the ratio of protein to soluble polysaccharide increased from 3.1 to 7.8 as the NaCl increased from 0 to 40 g/liter. Both trends raise speculation that an electrical stimulation drives microbial preference toward K+and protein accumulation to tolerate salinity. These findings are in accordance with an enrichment of halophilic organisms in the BES.Halobacteriumdominated in the BES by 56.8% at a NaCl concentration of 40 g/liter, while its abundance was found as low as 17.5% in the BC. These findings propose a new method of electrical stimulation to improve microbial salinity resistance.

Object. The goal of this study was to develop a new method of intraoperative monitoring of functions located in the lateral portion of the medulla oblongata. Based on the fact that the spinal trigeminal nucleus and tract are located in the lateral portion of the medulla oblongata, the authors intended to investigate the efficacy of trigeminal evoked potentials (TEPs) in intraoperative monitoring for assessing functions of the medulla oblongata.Methods. Trigeminal evoked potentials induced by electrical stimulation of the infraorbital nerve were recorded from the dorsolateral portion of the medulla oblongata (M-TEP) and the cerebral sensory cortex (C-TEP) in dogs. When the lateral one-sixth portion of the medulla was cut, the amplitude of the M-TEP decreased markedly, but the amplitude of the C-TEP and the somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) did not decrease. When the lateral one-third portion of the medulla was cut, the amplitude of the SSEP decreased, but that of the C-TEP showed no change. When the medulla was retracted, the amplitude of the M-TEP was more sensitive than that of SSEP. Pathological examinations revealed that retraction force less than 10 g and a reduction in the amplitude of the M-TEP less than 50% were safe.Conclusions. These results suggest that M-TEPs obtained from the dorsolateral portion of the medulla oblongata by electrical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve are clinically applicable as a new means of intraoperative monitoring of the functions of the medulla oblongata.

Purpose Elastomer seals are used in many applications. They are exposed to lubricants and additives at elevated temperatures, as well as mechanical stresses. They can only provide good sealing function when they have resistance to those factors. There are many elastomer-lubricant compatibility tests based on DIN ISO 1817 in industry. However, they are insufficient and costly. Correlations between the tests and the applications are inadequate. The purpose of this study is investigating lubricant compatibility of fluoroelastomers (FKM) seals in polyethylene-glycol (PG)- and polyalphaolefin (PAO)- based synthetic oils and developing a methodology to predict seal service life. Design/methodology/approach A new compatibility test which is more sufficient in terms of time and cost was developed and compared with a standard test, currently used in industry. Compatibility of FKM radial lip seals with PG- and PAO-based synthetic oils with different additives was investigated chemically and dynamically. Failure mechanisms were examined. Findings The new method and the Freudenberg Flender Test FB 73 11 008 showed similar results concerning damages and similar tendencies regarding wear. The additive imidazole derivative was the most critical. Static tests give indications of possible chemically active additives, but alone they are insufficient to simulate the dynamic applications. Originality/value The paper describes a new method to investigate elastomer-lubricant compatibility and gives first results with a variety of lubricants.

ABSTRACTPseudomonas aeruginosais an important, thriving member of microbial communities of microbial bioelectrochemical systems (BES) through the production of versatile phenazine redox mediators. Pure culture experiments with a model strain revealed synergistic interactions ofP. aeruginosawith fermenting microorganisms whereby the synergism was mediated through the shared fermentation product 2,3-butanediol. Our work here shows that the behavior and efficiency ofP. aeruginosain mediated current production is strongly dependent on the strain ofP. aeruginosa. We compared levels of phenazine production by the previously investigated model strainP. aeruginosaPA14, the alternative model strainP. aeruginosaPAO1, and the BES isolatePseudomonassp. strain KRP1 with glucose and the fermentation products 2,3-butanediol and ethanol as carbon substrates. We found significant differences in substrate-dependent phenazine production and resulting anodic current generation for the three strains, with the BES isolate KRP1 being overall the best current producer and showing the highest electrochemical activity with glucose as a substrate (19 μA cm−2with ∼150 μg ml−1phenazine carboxylic acid as a redox mediator). Surprisingly,P. aeruginosaPAO1 showed very low phenazine production and electrochemical activity under all tested conditions.IMPORTANCEMicrobial fuel cells and other microbial bioelectrochemical systems hold great promise for environmental technologies such as wastewater treatment and bioremediation. While there is much emphasis on the development of materials and devices to realize such systems, the investigation and a deeper understanding of the underlying microbiology and ecology are lagging behind. Physiological investigations focus on microorganisms exhibiting direct electron transfer in pure culture systems. Meanwhile, mediated electron transfer with natural redox compounds produced by, for example,Pseudomonas aeruginosamight enable an entire microbial community to access a solid electrode as an alternative electron acceptor. To better understand the ecological relationships between mediator producers and mediator utilizers, we here present a comparison of the phenazine-dependent electroactivities of threePseudomonasstrains. This work forms the foundation for more complex coculture investigations of mediated electron transfer in microbial fuel cells.

Object. Although chronic electrical stimulation of the globus pallidus (GP) has been shown to ameliorate motor disabilities in Parkinson disease (PD), the underlying mechanism remains to be clarified. In this study the authors explored the mechanism for the effects of deep brain stimulation of the GP by investigating the changes in neurotransmitter levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during the stimulation. Methods. Thirty patients received chronic electrical stimulation of the GP internus (GPi). Clinical effects were assessed using the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) and the Hoehn and Yahr Staging Scale at 1 week before surgery and at 6 and 12 months after surgery. One day after surgery, CSF samples were collected through a ventricular tube before and 1 hour after GPi stimulation. The concentration of neurotransmitters such as γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), noradrenaline, dopamine, and homovanillic acid (HVA) in the CSF was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography. The treatment was effective for tremors, rigidity, and drug-induced dyskinesia. The concentration of GABA in the CSF increased significantly during stimulation, although there were no significant changes in the level of noradrenaline, dopamine, and HVA. A comparison between an increased rate of GABA concentration and a lower UPDRS score 6 months postimplantation revealed that the increase in the GABA level correlated with the stimulation-induced clinical effects. Conclusions. Stimulation of the GPi substantially benefits patients with PD. The underlying mechanism of the treatment may involve activation of GABAergic afferents in the GP.

Upon overexpression of thel-valine biosynthetic genesilvBNCE, all strains producedl-valine. Among these strains,C. glutamicum aceEA16 (pJC4ilvBNCE) showed the highest biomass and product yields, and thus it was further improved by additional deletion of thepqoandppcgenes, encoding pyruvate:quinone oxidoreductase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, respectively. In fed-batch fermentations at high cell densities,C. glutamicum aceEA16 Δpqo Δppc(pJC4ilvBNCE) produced up to 738 mM (i.e., 86.5 g/liter)l-valine with an overall yield (YP/S) of 0.36 mol per mol of glucose and a volumetric productivity (QP) of 13.6 mM per h [1.6 g/(liter × h)]. Additional inactivation of the transaminase B gene (ilvE) and overexpression ofilvBNCDinstead ofilvBNCEtransformed thel-valine-producing strain into a 2-ketoisovalerate producer, excreting up to 303 mM (35 g/liter) 2-ketoisovalerate with aYP/Sof 0.24 mol per mol of glucose and aQPof 6.9 mM per h [0.8 g/(liter × h)]. The replacement of theaceEpromoter by thedapA-A16 promoter in the twoC. glutamicuml-lysine producers DM1800 and DM1933 improved the production by 100% and 44%, respectively. These results demonstrate thatC. glutamicumstrains with reduced PDHC activity are an excellent platform for the production of pyruvate-derived products.

Purpose In real-world decision-making, high accuracy data analysis is essential in a ubiquitous environment. However, we encounter missing data while collecting user-related data information because of various privacy concerns on account of a user. This paper aims to deal with incomplete data for fuzzy model identification, a new method of parameter estimation of a Takagi–Sugeno model in the presence of missing features. Design/methodology/approach In this work, authors proposed a three-fold approach for fuzzy model identification in which imputation-based linear interpolation technique is used to estimate missing features of the data, and then fuzzy c-means clustering is used for determining optimal number of rules and for the determination of parameters of membership functions of the fuzzy model. Finally, the optimization of the all antecedent and consequent parameters along with the width of the antecedent (Gaussian) membership function is done by gradient descent algorithm based on the minimization of root mean square error. Findings The proposed method is tested on two well-known simulation examples as well as on a real data set, and the performance is compared with some traditional methods. The result analysis and statistical analysis show that the proposed model has achieved a considerable improvement in accuracy in the presence of varying degree of data incompleteness. Originality/value The proposed method works well for fuzzy model identification method, a new method of parameter estimation of a Takagi–Sugeno model in the presence of missing features with varying degree of missing data as compared to some well-known methods.

✓ A new method of cranioplasty is described. The skull defect is exposed and multiple angled holes are drilled in the outer cortical bone around the defect. A resin plate is conventionally molded to fit the defect. After the resin plate is positioned in the skull defect, newly prepared viscous resin putty is injected into the holes around the defect. The viscous resin comes into contact with the margin of resin plate and, when it hardens, a monoblock casting of resin is formed. The resin plate is sealed to the bone. This technique has the main advantage of strength and good cosmetic appearance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is threefold: to classify wildcards into three particular types sharing similar characteristics; use the Fuzzy TOPSIS as a new method in foresight to turn qualitative ideas into quantitative ones; and apply a combination of Fuzzy TOPSIS and a panel of experts to prioritize weak signals. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors classify wildcards into three particular types which share similar character: natural wildcards, artificial wildcards (Degree 1) and artificial wildcards (Degree 2). Wildcards point to unexpected and surprising events including important results that can form watershed in the development of a specific trend. In addition, the authors present a Fuzzy TOPSIS model which can be used in various cases to prioritize a number of weak signals and put them in order, so that the most important ones are likely to yield the wildcard in the future Findings The authors presented a classification of wildcards with the same characteristics being natural wildcards, artificial wildcards (Degree 1) and artificial wildcards (Degree 2). The authors also prioritized the weak signals to deal with the most important ones and take appropriate action in advance so as to minimize possible damages and maximize the benefits of potential wildcards in an uncertain environment. Originality/value In this paper, the authors report on the prioritizing of weak signals by applying Fuzzy TOPSIS and classify wildcards. This is significant because, by identifying the most important weak signals, appropriate actions can be taken in the future if necessary. The paper should be of interest to readers in the area of participatory foresight.

✓ The feasibility of high-frequency transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) through screw electrodes placed in the skull was investigated for use in intraoperative monitoring of the motor pathways in patients who are in a state of general anesthesia during cerebral and spinal operations. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were elicited by TES with a train of five square-wave pulses (duration 400 µsec, intensity ≤ 200 mA, frequency 500 Hz) delivered through metal screw electrodes placed in the outer table of the skull over the primary motor cortex in 42 patients. Myogenic MEPs to anodal stimulation were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles. The mean threshold stimulation intensity was 48 ± 17 mA for the APB muscles, and 112 ± 35 mA for the TA muscles. The electrodes were firmly fixed at the site and were not dislodged by surgical manipulation throughout the operation. No adverse reactions attributable to the TES were observed. Passing current through the screw electrodes stimulates the motor cortex more effectively than conventional methods of TES. The method is safe and inexpensive, and it is convenient for intraoperative monitoring of motor pathways.
