Multidrug-resistant (MDR)Klebsiella pneumoniaehas become a major contributor to nosocomial bloodstream infections. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of two MDR extended-spectrum-β-lactamase-producing strains causing bloodstream infections. These sequenced genomes display a wide-spectrum virulence arsenal and will help us understand the genomic basis ofK. pneumoniaevirulence.

ABSTRACT Draft genomes of seven extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli strains recovered from New Zealand waterways are described. The mean genome size was 5.1 Mb, with 4,724 coding sequences. All genomes contained the ESBL gene blaCTX-M, and one carried a plasmid-mediated AmpC gene, blaCMY-2. A multidrug-resistant genotype was detected in three isolates.

The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from blood in children and their susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs commonly used in the therapy. The study was conducted at the Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina Province, Serbia, in a two-year period, from January 2009 to December 2010. A total of 424 non-duplicate strains were isolated from the blood of pediatric patients hospitalized in various wards in the Institute of Health Care of Children and Youth of Vojvodina Province. Fifty isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae were reported. The frequency of isolation of Klebsiella pneumoniae was 27/222 (12.2%) and 23/202 (11.3%) isolates in 2009 and 2010, respectively. There was a high prevalence of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, 76% (38/50), and 17 isolates (44.7%) were multidrug resistant (MDR). Further drug resistance surveillance in hospitals and the molecular characterization of ESBL-positive isolates in our country is necessary.

ABSTRACT Here, we present the draft genome sequences of nine multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from humans (n = 6) and chicken carcasses (n = 3) from Lagos, Nigeria, in 2013. Multiple extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes were identified in these isolates.

SUMMARYA total of 180 non-duplicate carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were recovered from patients hospitalized between December 2010 and January 2012 at a Chinese hospital. Eight KPC-2, four NDM-1, one VIM-2, and five KPC-2 plus IMP-4 producers were identified and all were multidrug resistant due to the presence of other resistance determinants, including extended-spectrum β-lactamases (CTX-M-15, SHV-12), 16S rRNA methylases (armA, rmtB) and plasmid-mediated quinolone-resistance determinants (qnrA, B, S, aac(6′)-Ib-cr). Nine K. pneumoniae clones (Kpn-A1/ST395, Kpn-A3/ST11, Kpn-A2/ST134, Kpn-B/ST263, Kpn-C/ST37, Kpn-D/ST39, Kpn-E/ST1151, Kpn-F/ST890, Kpn-G/ST1153) were identified. blaKPC-2 was located on transferable ~65 kb IncL/M (ST395, ST11, ST134, ST39) and ~100 kb IncA/C (ST37, ST1153, ST890) plasmids, respectively. On the other hand, blaNDM-1 was associated with a ~70 kb IncA/C plasmid (ST263). However, non-typable plasmids of ~40 kb containing blaVIM-2 were detected in the ST1151 clone. This work reports the first co-occurrence of four diverse types of carbapenemase of K. pneumoniae clones from a single hospital in China. IncA/C, IncL/M, and other successful plasmids may be important for the dissemination of carbapenemases, producing a complex epidemiological picture.

We report here the genome sequences of 10 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains of capsular type K2 isolated in Russia from patients in an infectious clinical hospital and neurosurgical intensive care unit. The draft genome sizes range from 5.34 to 5.87 Mb and include 5,448 to 6,137 protein-coding sequences.

ABSTRACT Enterobacter cloacae is a common member of the gut microbiota in healthy individuals. However, it is also an opportunistic pathogen, capable of causing bacteremia. We report the draft genomes of two Enterobacter cloacae subspecies cloacae strains isolated from hematology patients with bacteremia. Both isolates carry genes encoding extended-spectrum β-lactamases.

Here, we report the draft whole-genome sequences of 12 hospital-associated MRSP strains and their resistance genotypes and phenotypes.
