ObjectivesTo determine the inter-rater repeatability of a musculoskeletal examination and to compare findings between adolescent athletes and non-athletes in Finland.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a musculoskeletal examination assessing posture, mobility and movement control was carried out by a sports and exercise medicine physician on 399 athletes aged 14–17 years and 177 non-athletes. Within 2 weeks another sports and exercise medicine physician repeated the examination for 41 adolescents to test the inter-rater repeatability.ResultsIn total, 10 of the 11 tests performed had at least moderate inter-rater reliability (κ ≥0.4 or percentage agreement >80%). Athletes more often than non-athletes had one shoulder protruded (8.0% vs 4.0%, OR 2.81, 95% CI 1.16 to 6.81). Forty-six per cent of athletes had good knee control in the two-legged vertical drop jump test compared with 32% of non-athletes (OR 1.99, 95% CI 1.29 to 3.06). Athletes had better core muscle control with 86.3% being able to remain in the correct plank position for 30 s compared with 68.6% of non-athletes (OR 2.70, 95% CI 1.67 to 4.36). In the deep squat test, good lumbar spine control was maintained only by 35.8% of athletes and 38.4% of non-athletes.ConclusionA basic musculoskeletal examination is sufficiently reliable to be performed by trained physicians as a part of a periodic health evaluation. Shortfalls in mobility, posture and movement control are common in both athletes and non-athletes. These deficits could have been caused by sedentary behaviour, monotonous training, or both.

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of postactivation potentiation (PAP) in vertical and horizontal jump performance in pre-pubertal children. Material and method: One hundred and nineteen children (65 girls and 54 boys; 6.8 ± 0.7 years old; 124.5 ± 6.4 cm; 25.2 ± 5.1 kg) participated in this study. This was a transversal cross-sectional study which incorporated a within-subjects repeatedmeasures design, where participants completed all protocols. The experimental procedure required four total testing, separated by one week, using a counterbalanced. This study investigated jumping performance associated with weighted jumps, lowload vertical jumps, and horizontal jumps. During two sessions the participants performed vertical jumps with and without PAP, the other two sessions the same procedures were performed for horizontal jumps. The PAP protocol consisted of one set of five weighted countermovement jumps with low-load (10% of body mass) and a rest interval of four minutes prior to the jump tests. Paired t-tests were used between conditions (PAP and control) in the vertical jump and horizontal jump test. In addition, Cohen’s d effect size and 95% confidence interval was used. Results: Significant jump height was observed in the vertical jump in the PAP condition compared to the control condition (p = 0.007). Similar results were observed for the horizontal jump tests, with significant longer distance observed in the PAP condition (p = 0.036). Conclusions: Pre-pubertal children can benefit from the effects of PAP in vertical and horizontal jumping performance when preceded by low-load ballistic movements. A protocol implementing low-loads, determined by a relative percentage of body mass is effective to promote PAP for young children.

In order to get a reliable estimate of brucellosis prevalence in Eritrean dairy cattle, a cross-sectional study was carried out in 2009. The survey considered the sub-population of dairy cattle reared in modern small- and medium-sized farms. Samples were screened with the Rose Bengal test (RBT) and positive cases were confirmed with the complement fixation test (CFT). A total of 2.77%(417/15 049; Credibility Interval CI: 2.52% – 3.05%) of the animals tested in this study were positive for antibodies to Brucellaspecies, with a variable and generally low distribution of positive animals at regional level. The highest seroprevalence was found in the Maekel region (5.15%; CI: 4.58% – 5.80%), followed by the Debub (1.99%; CI: 1.59% – 2.50%) and Gash-Barka (1.71%; CI: 1.34% – 2.20%) regions. Seroprevalence at sub-regional levels was also generally low, except for two sub-regions of Debub and the sub-region Haicota from the Gash-Barka region. Seroprevalence was high and more uniformly distributed in the Maekel region, namely in the Asmara, Berik and Serejeka sub-regions. Considering the overall low brucellosis prevalence in the country, as identified by the present study, a brucellosis eradication programme for dairy farms using a test-and-slaughter policy would be possible. However, to encourage the voluntary participation of farmers to the programme and to raise their awareness of the risks related to the disease for animals and humans, an extensive public awareness campaign should be carefully considered, as well as strict and mandatory dairy movement control.

   Background: A COVID-19 cluster named as Rengas Cluster was declared on 6th November 2020 after nine students from a boarding school in Padang Rengas, Perak diagnosed as positive COVID-19. Risk assessment was conducted and Targeted Enhanced Movement Control Order (TEMCO) was enforced at the school to contain the viral transmission. An investigation was carried out to analyze epidemiological data, clinical manifestations among cases and effect of TEMCO on this cluster.  Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from 2nd August 2021 until 3rd September 2021 using data that obtained from Kuala Kangsar District Health Office Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) Surveillance System through e-COVID notification system. The variables used in this current study include socio-demographic and clinical characteristics that include age group, gender, occupation, co-morbidities, symptoms and signs.  Results: There were 132 cases out of 324 exposed populations whereby most cases were students (87.9%) and aged between 11 and 20 years old (84.8%). More than half of cases were female (57.6%) with only one case had existing co-morbidity. Majority of cases were asymptomatic (64.4%). Those symptomatic mainly presented with cough (66%) and the strongest significant positive correlation were observed between anosmia and ageusia (r = 0.807, n = 47, p < 0.001). There was no significant association between age group and development of symptoms [χ2 (6, N = 132) = 6.014, p > 0.05]. An abrupt decline in number of cases was observed following TEMCO enforcement.  Conclusion: COVID-19 cases in Rengas Cluster were mostly among young students, asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic. This cluster was timely and effectively controlled by TEMCO enforcement which contributed towards early diagnosis, isolation and treatment for more effective control and preventive measures.

Abstract Background To become a doctor with a high level of professionalism and ethical standards, it is important to have and maintain a high level of motivation from the time of admission to medical school. However, no studies in Japan have quantitatively investigated the factors related to motivation immediately after enrollment. In this study, we identified the background factors that influence the motivation of medical students immediately after admission. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. First-year medical students answered our questionnaire three weeks after admission. The questionnaire comprised 16 demographic items, and the 28-item Academic Motivation Scale was used to quantify motivation. Results Our analysis showed that amotivation, representing low self-determinant motivation, was significantly higher in students whose parents were medical professionals and in students who did not talk about their problems than in those whose parents were not medical professionals and those who did talk about their problems, respectively. Intrinsic motivation, which indicates the level of self-determinant motivation, was significantly lower in students who belonged to a sports club. Conclusions No previous studies have suggested that having parents who are medical professionals might be a factor associated with their children’s decreased motivation when entering medical school in Japan. However, further research is needed to analyze this relationship.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had considerable psychological health impacts across the globe. This study aimed to establish the psychological process variables underlying psychopathology in Malaysian public university students during the national Movement Control Order (MCO). The aim was to craft structured and sustainable psychological support programs with these students. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving Malaysian university students subjected to the Malaysian MCO. Structured questionnaires measuring sociodemographic factors, measures of depression, anxiety, stress, psychological mindedness, psychological flexibility and state mindfulness were employed. A total of 515 students participated in this study with 12 students (2.3%) being quarantined at the time. Many of them scored ‘moderate’ or above on the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) with 20.2%, 25.0% and 14.2%, respectively. Quarantined students had higher depressive symptoms, with female students scoring significantly higher for depression, anxiety, and stress. Multiple regressions suggested gender and quarantine status predicted depression scores. However, only gender significantly predicted anxiety and stress. Psychological flexibility and psychological mindedness (Insight subscale) are significantly correlated with depression, anxiety, and stress, with psychological mindedness predicting all three psychopathologies. This study demonstrates that gender, psychological flexibility, and psychological mindedness are key demographic and psychological factors impacting students. Targeting psychological flexibility and psychological mindedness may enable timely prevention and intervention programs for our students to support their mental and physical health as we move through, and out of, the pandemic.

This paper highlights the findings of a comparative cross-sectional study in the cantons of Uri (UR) and Schwyz (SZ). In this study, participating in sports and daily physical activity among 5th grades were observed trough selected indicators. The study was conducted in autumn 2012 and 2013 and included a randomly selected sample of 161 pupils in Uri (10.6±0.7 year olds) and 261 pupils in the canton of Schwyz (10.7±0.7 year olds). In both regions, a high rate of participation in free time sports activities could be detected: 68.8% (UR) and 70.1% (SZ) of all the children involved are members of a sports club, with more than half of them, being active, both in and outside of sports club. The proportion of completely inactive children lies below 5%. Furthermore, exercise and sports are regarded as the most important free time activities (regardless of gender and nationality). The majority of children (UR: 73.4%; SZ: 91%) commuted actively to school, with a significantly higher proportion amongst pupils in the canton of Schwyz (p < 0.001) due to the shorter distances. In total, slightly more than the half of the children reached the official recommendations of at least 60 min. of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. There was no association between the pedometer-based daily activity and the use of media.

The objective of this research is to identify the level of general fatigue (FG), physical fatigue (FF) and concentration/motivation (C/M) in sports coaches. Two components of grit, consistency of interest (CI) and perseverance in effort (PE), are also assessed. The possible effects of sex, age, marital status, employment contract, work dedication and grit on FG, FF and C/M in sports coaches are examined. This cross-sectional study analyses 335 sports club coaches (21.2% women, 78.8% male) with a mean age of 29.88 (SD = 9.97) years, at a significance level of p < 0.05 for all analyses. Different aspects of fatigue were determined using the Spanish translation of the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 (IMF-20). The Grit-S scale was used to measure the ability to persevere, have passion and commit. The results indicated that men scored higher in FF, C/M and PE, while women obtained higher values in FG and CI. Non-contract coaches had higher FG, CI and PE, while coaches with contracts scored higher on C/M and FF. In conclusion, coaches with higher CI had higher FG, and high levels of PE were associated with low FG levels.

Stress is a common mental issue among students during the COVID-19 outbreak. This study aimed to determine and to compare the stress level among health sciences and non-health sciences students during the Movement Control Order. Cross-sectional study design was used, and the Perceived Stress Scale questionnaire was distributed for this study. The majority of 145 students (81.4%) had a moderate stress level, and there was no significant difference in the mean of the stress level between the health sciences and non-health sciences students(p>0.05). Athletes require greater energy and protein than people with normal activity to balance the body’s metabolic rate. The body mass index is a factor which directly related to the physical performance of martial-art athletes. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between energy, protein suffi ciency and body mass index with power of martial-art athletes. This research was observational analytic with cross sectional study design. Samples were consisted of 46 athletes who has won at least one martial art games. Data were collected through interview. Energy and protein adequacy level were measured by 2 × 24 hours food recall questionnaires; body weight and height measured by digital scale and microtoice; and power was measured with vertical jump test. There was a positive relationship between adequacy level of protein (p = 0.011) and athletes’s power, but negative correlation between BMI and athlethes’s power (p = 0.019). There was no relationship between the adequacy level of energy with power of martial-art athletes. It was concluded that increament of protein adequacy level could increase athlete’s power. Otherwise, escalation of body mass index could decrease the power of athletes. Therefore, it is needed to monitor nutrient intake and BMI to increase the power of martial-art athletes.
