A possible egg of the dromaeosaur Deinonychus antirrhopus: phylogenetic and biological implications

A unique find of a partial egg in contact with articulated gastralia from a known specimen of the dromaeosaurid Deinonychus antirrhopus (AMNH 3015) is described. Much of the original taphonomic context of the specimen was lost during the 1931 excavation and preparation, but enough information is preserved to provide strong evidence for a parental association between the adult skeleton and egg. The articulated nature of the gastralia suggests that the adult skeleton was at least partially articulated and had not suffered from either extensive subaerial exposure or postmortem transport, and the egg preservation also indicates in situ burial and postburial lithogenic crushing. Additional support stems from the presence of limey claystone matrix that indicates a low-energy depositional event. Phylogenetic characteristics of the eggshell microstructure are consistent with a theropod origin, and skeletochronological analysis suggests that AMNH 3015 was an adult and thus of breeding age bolstering the interpretation that the egg derives from the skeletal specimen. Physiological parameters of D. antirrhopus, such as estimated mass and pelvic canal diameter, as well as eggshell thickness, are very similar to the similar sized and closely related oviraptorid Citipati osmolskae. Closely related maniraptoran theropods of several species have been found brooding their nests with the gastralia close to or in contact with eggs, and such a scenario is consistent with the preservation of AMNH 3015. Alternative explanations to a parental association, such as random co-occurrence or feeding, are improbable given the taphonomic and biological data of the find. AMNH 3015, therefore, probably represents the first identifiable dromaeosaurid egg yet discovered. It shares derived characters such as two eggshell layers with other theropods. Within theropods, the AMNH 3015 eggshell shares derived characteristics with oviraptorids and differs from troodontid eggshell despite the fact that these taxa are often recovered as sister groups in analyses of skeletal characters, but this signal is weak.

ABSTRACTIon-beam sputtering (IBS) has been studied as a means for scalable, mask-less nanopatterning of surfaces. Patterning at the nanoscale has been achieved for numerous types of materials including: semiconductors, metals and insulators. Although much work has been focused on tailoring nanopatterning by systematic ion-beam parameter manipulation, limited work has addressed elucidating on the underlying mechanisms for self-organization of multi-component surfaces. In particular there has been little attention to correlate the surface chemistry variation during ion irradiation with the evolution of surface morphology and nanoscale self-organization. Moreover the role of surface impurities on patterning is not well known and characterization during the time-scale of modification remains challenging. This work summarizes an in-situ approach to characterize the evolution of surface chemistry during irradiation and its correlation to surface nanopatterning for a variety of multi-components surfaces. The work highlights the importance and role of surface impurities in nanopatterning of a surface during low-energy ion irradiation. In particular, it shows the importance of irradiation-driven mechanisms in GaSb(100) nanopatterning by low-energy ions and how the study of these systems can be impacted by oxide formation.

AbstractWe demonstrate a vacuum lithography process which uses a finely focused Ga ion beam to write the pattern which is then transferred to the InP pattern by low energy dry etching. Surface steps on the order of 1000-2000A in height, and lateral resolution limited only by size of the ion beam, can be efficiently prepared using moderate Ga ion fluences. The surfaces prepared by this process are damage free and suitable for epitaxial overgrowth. GaInAs/InP heterostructures grown on in-situ patterned substrates show excellent morphology and high luminescence efficiency.

The Vestgӧtabreen Complex exposed in the Southwestern Caledonian Basement Province of Svalbard comprises two Caledonian high-pressure units. In situ white mica 40Ar/39Ar and monazite Th-U-total Pb geochronology has resolved the timing of the tectonic evolution of the complex. Cooling of the Upper Unit during exhumation occurred at 476 ± 2 Ma, shortly after eclogite-facies metamorphism. The two units were juxtaposed at 454 ± 6 Ma. This was followed by subaerial exposure and deposition of Bullbreen Group sediments. A 430–400 Ma late Caledonian phase of thrusting associated with major sinistral shearing throughout Svalbard deformed both the complex and the overlying sediments. This phase of thrusting is prominently recorded in the Lower Unit, and is associated with a pervasive greenschist-facies metamorphic overprint of high-pressure lithologies. A c. 365–344 Ma geochronological record may represent an Ellesmerian tectonothermal overprint. Altogether, the geochronological evolution of the Vestgӧtabreen Complex, with previous petrological and structural studies, suggests that it may be a correlative to the high-pressure Tsäkkok Lens in the Scandinavian Caledonides. It is suggested that the Vestgӧtabreen Complex escaped to the periphery of the orogen along the sinistral strike-slip shear zones prior to, or during the initial stages of continental collision between Baltica and Laurentia.
