Biological materials naturally display an astonishing variety of sophisticated nanostructures that are difficult to obtain even with the most technological advanced synthetic methodologies. We describe a new type of Co - Ni - P ternary alloy microstructure particles prepared by electroless deposition based on biological templating. The plating parameters were explored and the microstructure material was studied by microbiological method, scanning election microscope (SEM), energy dispersive analysis (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results showed that the Bacillus were coated by Co - Ni - P ternary alloy successfully and the average contents of Co , Ni , and P in Co - Ni - P coating were about 18.73 wt%, 74.43 wt% and 3.04 wt%, respectively. The structures of as-plated Co - Ni - P alloy were amorphous and exhibited excellent magnetic property. The values of saturation magnetization (Ms), remnants magnetization (Mr) and coercivity (Hc) of the sample were about 18 emu/g, 3.5 emu/g, and 107 Oe, receptivity.

Abstract In this work, a new type of zinc(II) coordination polymer {[Zn(HIDC)(BBM)0.5]·H2O} n (Zn-CP) was synthesized using 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid (H3IDC) and 2,2-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1,3-benzimidazole (BBM) under hydrothermal conditions. Its structure has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Zn(II) ion is linked by the HIDC2− ligand to form a zigzag chain by chelating and bridging, and then linked by BBM to form a layered network structure. Adjacent layers are further connected by hydrogen bond interaction to form a 3-D supramolecular framework. The solid-state fluorescence performance of Zn-CP shows that compared with free H3IDC ligand, its fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced.

The objective of this study was to develop a novel silica modified large-sized hydroxyapatite whiskers with improved properties for use in bone repair applications. Large-sized whiskers with a mean length of 250μm were obtained by a hydrothermal co-precipitation method at 150°C, 7.5Mpa in high-pressure reactor. Silica modified hydroxyapatite whiskers were prepared by dissolving TEOS in ethanol solution, then sintering with hydroxyapatite. The compositional and morphological properties of prepared whiskers were studied by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fouier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated the evidence of nanosilicon dioxide particles on the surface of HAP whiskers. The size of nanosilicon dioxide particles depends on dropping and stirring rate. Hence, this new type of silica modified large-sized hydroxyapatite whiskers is a valuable candidate for biomedical applications.Key words: hydroxyapatite, hydrothermal co-precipitation, surface modified, whiskers

Magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in layered structures of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases are mediated by mechanical deformation and depends strongly on the interface conditions. Ni -lead zirconium titanate- Ni trilayers with neither electrodes nor bonding layers have been derived by electroless deposition. The structure of the electroless deposited Ni layer was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The cross-section of the Ni/PZT layers was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The value of ME voltage coefficient (αE,31) increases as the interface roughness increases. The maximum of αE,31 for the Ni/PZT/Ni trilayers polarized after electroless deposition is higher than that for the Ni/PZT/Ni trilayers polarized before electroless deposition. It is essential to optimize the interface and the polarization to obtain higher ME voltage coefficient.

In this work, as-received HiPCO single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are incorporated in a controllable manner at various concentrations into Cu-SWCNT composites via electroless plating, by varying the related reaction times, with polyethylene glycol (PEG) used as a dispersing agent. The resultant samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphology assessment, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the assessment of crystal phase identification, and Raman spectroscopy for the confirmation of the presence of the incorporated SWCNTs. The Cu-SWCNT composites were found to contain carbon, catalytic iron (associated with the raw, as-received SWCNTs), oxygen, and copper; the latter was found to be inversely proportional to carbon and iron contents. The oxygen (associated with both the SWCNT defect sites and oxidized copper surfaces) remained more or less constant regardless of the proportion of SWCNTs in the composites. The Raman IG:ID ratio remains within the experimental error constant, indicating that the electroless deposition does not have a deleterious effect on the SWCNTs. At short deposition times, SEM revealed a relatively dense structure comprising a distinctive fibrous morphology, suggestive of an underlying SWCNT substrate coated with copper; however, with increasing deposition, a more porous morphology is observed. The size of the granular particles increases up until 10 min of reaction, after which time it remains unchanged.

A new type of antiferromagnetic CoAl2O4 coated ferromagnetic Co solid solution is synthesized by arc-discharging. Typical HRTEM images show that the nanocapsules form in a core-shell structure. The size of the nanocapsules is in range of 10-90 nm and the thickness of the shell is about 3-10 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveal that the core consists of Co solid solution, while the shell is CoAl2O4. The magnetic field and temperature dependence of magnetizations confirm that the Co solid solution nanocapsules are basically in the ferromagnetic state below Curie temperature. In addition, the antiferromagnetic order occurs with Neél temperature TN of about 5 K. The saturation magnetization of Ms = 76.1 Am2/kg and the coercive force of Hc= 23.28 kA/m are achieved at room temperature for the Co solid solution nanocapsules.

Pyrite (FeS2) is an important semiconductor material which shows various excellent optical and electrical properties and extensive applied prospect as a new-type, photoelectrical functional materials. In this study, a low cost and efficient simple hydrothermal two-step synthetic method was given to obtain FeS2 microspheres with 2-3 μm in diameter. The obtained products were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). XRD showed that the synthetic sample consisted of two crystal structures of FeS2, pyrite and marcasite. SEM observation indicated that FeS2 microspheres were well crystallized and had good uniformity. UV-Vis spectrum had a strong optical absorption in the region of 200-400 nm wave length. The reaction temperature had an impact on the size of FeS2 microspheres. A possible mechanism for the size of the FeS2 microspheres generated at high temperature is smaller than that at low temperature is discussed.
