Effect of first pass rolling reduction ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TA1/Q235B clad plates

In this study, the microstructure, the shear strength and Vickers-hardness of TA1/Q235B clad plates under different first pass rolling reduction ratio (FP3R) were investigated. The microstructure and bonding interface were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Vickers-hardness and tensile shear strength were also detected. The result indicated a good bonding along the interface of the bonded with flat and smooth under different reduction ratio. The shear strength of the TA1/Q235B clad plate increases with the increase of reduction ratio which was 189 MPa at maximum. The maximum Vickers-hardness was approximately 198.7 HV. The thickness of Ti and Fe diffusion layer increases from 2.6 to 3.65 [Formula: see text]m and 2.1 to 3.3 [Formula: see text]m, respectively. TiC and Fe-Ti intermetallic compounds were formed at the bonding interface due to diffusion of Fe, Ti and C, causing micro-indentation at the interface to initiate cracking and diffusion, and reduced the bonding quality.

Prefabricated UHPC-steel composite structure can make full use of the two materials’ mechanical and construction performance characteristics, with super mechanical properties and durability, which has been proved to be a very promising structure. However, using traditional mechanical connectors to connect prefabricated UHPC and steel not only is inconvenient for the prefabrication of UHPC components but also introduces heavy welding work, which is detrimental to the construction speed and antifatigue performance of the composite structure. Bonding UHPC-steel interface with epoxy adhesive is a potential alternative to avoid the above problem. In order to explore the mechanical properties of the prefabricated UHPC-steel epoxy bonding interface, this study carried out the direct shear test, tensile test, and tensile-shear test of the UHPC-steel epoxy-bonded interface (prefabricated UHPC-steel epoxy bonding interface). The results show that the interface failure is mainly manifested as the peeling of the epoxy-UHPC interface and the destruction of part of the UHPC matrix (the failure of the UHPC's surface). In pure shear and pure tension state, the interfacial shear strength is 5.14 MPa and the interfacial tensile strength is 1.18 MPa. In the tensile-shear state, the interfacial shear strength is 0.61 MPa and the interfacial tensile strength is 1.06 MPa. The stress-displacement curves of the interface normal and tangential direction are all in the shape of a two-fold line. The ultimate displacement was within 0.1 mm, showing the characteristics of brittle failure. Finally, a numerical model of the tensile specimen is established based on the cohesive interface element, and the interfacial tensile-shear coupling failure mechanism (tensile-shear coupling effect) is analyzed.

Three types of clad sheets, Cu/Al, Cu/AA5052, and Cu/AA5083, were produced by cold roll bonding with the rolling reduction of 50% and 75%. Tensile shear tests which give tensile shear strength were performed in order to assess the bond strength. Scanning electron microscopy was performed on the fractured interface produced by the tensile shear tests, which suggests that the fracture occurs within the Al alloy layer. The tensile shear strengths considering the area fraction of deposit of Al alloy on Cu side were compared with the shear stress converting from the ultimate tensile strengths. As a result, the tensile shear strength of the clad sheets is attributed to the shear strength of Al alloy layer close to the well bonded interface. A simple model was proposed that explains the effects of the rolling reduction and area fraction of deposit of Al alloy.

Commercial adhesives present a high bond strength and water resistance, but they are considered non-healthier products. Chitosan can be considered as an interesting biosourced and biodegradable alternative, despite its low water resistance. Here, its wood bonding implementation and its tensile shear strength in dry and wet conditions were investigated depending on its structural characteristics. Firstly, the spread rate, open assembly time, drying pressure, drying temperature, and drying time have been determined for two chitosans of European pine double lap specimens. An adhesive solution spread rate of 1000 g·m−2, an open assembly time of 10 min, and a pressure temperature of 55 °C for 105 min led to a bond strength of 2.82 MPa. Secondly, a comparison between a high molecular weight/low deacetylation degree chitosan and a lower molecular weight/higher deacetylation degree chitosan was conducted. Tests were conducted with beech simple lap specimens in accordance with the implementation conditions and the conditioning treatments in wet and dry environments required for thermoplastic wood adhesive standards used in non-structural applications (EN 204 and EN 205). The results clearly revealed the dependence of adhesive properties and water resistance on the structural features of chitosans (molecular weight and deacetylation degree), explaining the heterogeneity of results published notably in this field.

In this study, lap joint experiments were conducted using galvanized high-strength steel, SGAFH 590 FB 2.3 mmt, which was applied to automotive chassis components in the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. Zinc residues were confirmed using a semi-quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the porosity in the weld. In addition, a tensile shear test was performed to evaluate the weldability. Furthermore, the effect of porosity defects, such as blowholes and pits generated in the weld, on the tensile shear strength was experimentally verified by comparing the porosity at the weld section of the tensile test specimen with that measured through radiographic testing.

The present work studied the enhancement of the tensile shear strength for joining AA6061-T6 aluminium to galvanized DP590 steel via electrically-assisted mechanical clinching (EAMC) using an integrated 2D FE model. To defeat the difficulties of joining low-ductility aluminium alloy to high-strength steel, the electroplastic effect obtained from the electrically-assisted process was applied to enhance the clinch-ability. For this purpose, the results of experiments performed by the chamfering punches with and without electrically-assisted pre-heating were compared. Joint cross-section, failure load, failure mode, fracture displacement, material flow, and failure mechanism were assessed in order to study the failure behaviour. The results showed that the joints clinched at the EAMC condition failed with the dominant dimpled mechanism observed on the fracture surface of AA6061 side, achieved from the athermal effect of the electroplasticity. Besides, these joints were strengthened 32% with a much more fracture displacement around 20% compared with non-electrically-assisted pre-heating.
