INTEGRATING USER INTERFACE DEVELOPMENT AND MODERN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

A long-term goal for software engineers is integrating the separate processes of user interface development and modern software development. With emergent CASE technology, software engineers can begin to explore ways to achieve this integration. Exploration involves investigating candidate methodologies that let developers apply different development strategies to different parts of an interactive system. Disciplined long-term investigation requires that the fundamental principles governing each process be fixed and that evolving development methods comprising each process be accommodated. This paper proposes a computer-based process model that fixes the principles and accommodates evolving methods. Model features include a collection of software engineering and knowledge engineering techniques that supports a development organization of human and computer-based agents, a coordination activity that supports opportunistic behavior of developers, a unifying representation that leads to mutually consistent results from developers, and an extendable topology that enhances collaboration among developers while reducing their communications burden.

This Repository Information System is an idea that appears to help agencies manage thesis archiving that was previously still done conventionally by collecting the results of thesis binding (hardcopy) and CD containing thesis files along with the source code of the program that was made (softcopy) into a digital system new and modern. Repository Information System is a system that is expected to help the School of Information and Computer Management (STMIK) Shaykh Zainuddin NW Anjani to organize the archiving of thesis data that has been done by students to be neater, safer and easier to manage. The repository information system was developed using the waterfall software development process model and object oriented analysis modeling, then implemented using the Codeigniter programming language, one of the PHP frameworks. The result of this study is a website-based thesis repository system that can archive student thesis data and can also be used to search and display existing thesis data through the admin or user interface in this case students.

The complexity of nowadays car manufacturing processes increases constantly due to the increasing number of electronic and digital features in cars as well as the shorter life cycle of car designs, which raises the need for faster adaption to new car models. However, the ongoing digitalization of production and working contexts offers the chance to support the worker in production using digital information as well as innovative, interactive, and digital devices. Therefore, in this work we investigate a representative production step in a long-term project together with a German car manufacturer, which is structured into three phases. In the first phase, we investigated the working process empirically and developed a comprehensive and innovative user interface design, which addresses various types of interactive devices. Building up on this, we developed the device score model, which is designed to investigate interactive system and user interface in production context due to ergonomics, UI design, performance, technology acceptance, and user experience. This work was conducted in the second phase of the project, in which we used this model to investigate the subjective suitability of six innovative device setups that implement the user interface design developed in phase one in an experimental setup with 67 participants at two locations in south Germany. The major result showed that the new user interface design run on a smart phone is the most suitable setup for future interactive systems in car manufacturing. In the third and final phase, we investigated the suitability of the two best rated devices for long term use by two workers using the system during a full shift. These two systems were compared with the standard system used. The major conclusion is that smartphones as well as AR glasses show very high potential to increase performance in production if used in a well-designed fashion.

Consistency in user interface design is generally recognized as a desirable goal. The main problem facing most practitioners is how to achieve it. In many cases the solution begins with a user interface styleguide that defines the design criteria for user interface developers. A styleguide is a necessary, but not sufficient, part of the solution. In practice, achieving consistency requires a multi-faceted approach ranging from design guidelines to organizational structures and processes. This paper discusses macroergonomic aspects of styleguide development in a large software development organization, focusing on the processes and organizational strategies used to develop content and achieve initial buyin by user interface designers and developers.

An emerging enterprise-wide orientation evidenced by comprehensive enterprise modeling supported by a technological architecture that includes computer aided software engineering (CASE) tools may empower knowledge and software engineers greater than ever before. An enterprise-wide orientation seeks to carry the strategy of an organization throughout its operations. Enterprise modeling makes it possible to have this panoramic view of the enterprise. An advanced technological architecture that includes CASE empowers enterprise functional personnel, knowledge engineers, and software engineers with the methodological and technological platform required to produce a comprehensive enterprise model. Current environmental trends are influencing how well organizations implement this enterprise-wide orientation, modeling perspective, and the methodological and technological platform.

However, the retention of treatment effects and the generalizability of the cognitive improvement to the daily occupations are not clear. Current telehealth usability questionnaires are designed primarily for older technologies, where telehealth interaction is conducted over dedicated videoconferencing applications. However, telehealth services are increasingly conducted over computer-based systems that rely on commercial software and a user supplied computer interface. Therefore, a usability questionnaire that addresses the changes in telehealth service delivery and technology is needed.  The Telehealth Usability Questionnaire (TUQ) was developed to evaluate the usability of telehealth implementation and services.  This paper addresses: 1) the need for a new measure of telehealth usability, 2) the development of the TUQ, 3) intended uses for the TUQ, and 4) the reliability of the TUQ. Analyses indicate that the TUQ is a solid, robust, and versatile measure that can be used to measure the quality of the computer-based user interface and the quality of the telehealth interaction and services.

AbstractThe establishment of human-centered design within software development processes is still a challenge. Numerous methods exist that aim to increase the usability and user experience of an interactive system. Nevertheless, the selection of appropriate methods remains to be challenging, as there are multiple different factors that have a significant impact on the appropriateness of the methods in their context of use. The present article investigates current strategies of method selection based on a conference workshop with practitioners. The results show that usability and user experience professionals concentrate on five to seven well-known methods and will need more support to select and use further ones.
