AVALANCHE CORRELATION IN POWER SPECTRA WITH WIDE PEAKS

The occurrence of wide peaks in the frequency range spanning fifteen decades from mHz to above THz was reported in the power spectra of many natural systems. Mostly, these spectral peaks appear superimposed to the 1/f noise. Actually, two different types of spectral peaks were picked out: a first type characterized by wide peaks and high 1/f slope of the overall spectral behavior, the second one by narrow peaks spanning less than one frequency decade and low slopes. Here we highlight the role of correlation among avalanches as the main source of the wide noise peaks observed. The present theory is based on first principle statistics of elementary events clustered in time-amplitude correlated avalanches. A spectral power master equation suitable to explain peaked noise spectra arising from avalanche correlations is achieved analytically. Excellent agreement with our experiments in superconductors and many other observations in biological and natural systems are reported. Our statistical model shows that avalanche correlation gives wide peaks in the power spectrum superimposed to the 1/f behavior with high slope, a typical signature of avalanche processes.

Objective To investigate the use of quantitative EEG (qEEG) in patients with acute encephalopathies (AEs) and EEG background abnormalities. Method Patients were divided into favorable outcome (group A, 43 patients) and an unfavorable outcome (group B, 5 patients). EEGLAB software was used for the qEEG analysis. A graphic of the spectral power from all channels was generated for each participant. Statistical comparisons between the groups were performed. Results In group A, spectral analysis revealed spectral peaks (theta and alpha frequency bands) in 84% (38/45) of the patients. In group B, a spectral peak in the delta frequency range was detected in one patient. The remainder of the patients in both groups did not present spectral peaks. Statistical analysis showed lower frequencies recorded from the posterior electrodes in group B patients. Conclusion qEEG may be useful in the evaluations of patients with AEs by assisting with the prognostic determination.


From records of water levels at nineteen shoreline stations on Lakes Michigan, Huron and Superior (figure 1), we have prepared power spectra from 95 stationdata sets and 128 spectra of interstation coherence and phase difference. Those spectra have been used to . (1) identify the first five free gravitational, barotropic modes (surface seiches) of the three basins; (ii) estimate the corresponding seiche frequencies, Lake Huron table 2, Lake Michigan tables 3 and 4, Lake Superior table 7; (iii) determine, for some modes, the phase progression around the basin imposed by the Earth’s rotation; and (iv) speculate on the structure of other oscillations, including diurnal and semidiurnal tides. , Because the number of recording stations was limited, the phase progression of individual modes could only be determined with confidence for the first and second in Lake Michigan (figure 13), for the first, second, third, and eighth mode in Lake Superior (figures 22 and 32 b )and for the semidiurnal tide in both basins (figure 31). Except for the Superior semidiurnal tide, which progresses clockwise , all the modes illustrated in figures 13 and 22 and the Lake Michigan semidiurnal tide conform to a positive amphidromic pattern - counterclockwise progression. Possible reasons for the difference in tidal behaviour in the two basins are discussed in §4 and by Hamblin (1976). There is very close agreement between the observed frequency and the phase progression of the first three and eighth Superior modes and results from the two dimensional computations of Platzman (1972) and Rao & Schwab (1976). Because some of the level recorders were not protected from local harbour oscillations in the period range below 2 h, and because some of the data sets listed in tables 1 and 6 were available only in the form of hourly readings, spectra from some stations exhibited contamination by aliasing. Section 2 ( b ) is devoted to a discussion of: (i) the nature of this spectral contamination (see figure 4); (ii) its extent in our examples; and (iii) attempts to minimize its influence through identification of the principal aliases and exploitation of the discovery that useful information can still be extracted from interstation coherence and phase spectra, even if the power spectra from one or both stations of the pair are badly aliased. With aliases identified or absent, the remaining spectral and interstation coherence peaks correspond to free modes (and tides). In Lake Michigan the first three modes are the most strongly excited and are clearly identified as longitudinal seiches (§§ 2 ( c-f ),2( i )). A transverse (E-W) seiche is also strongly excited, probably in the form of a negative amphidrome, in the south-central reach of the basin (for example T1 in figure 6), but the structure and identity of oscillations corresponding to spectral peaks at higher frequencies cannot yet be resolved. For Green Bay, a 192 km (120 mile) long gulf opening into Lake Michigan, a remarkable double resonance is described in §2( g ). The Bay responds as a viscously damped system driven by two forcing oscillations - the semidiurnal tide and the first mode of the main Michigan basin - at respective frequencies 1.93 and 2.67 cycles per day (c/d), one on each side of the natural frequency of the Bay-Lake system, 2.2 c/d (figures 9 and 10). In the Superior basin, topographically more complex than Michigan, the first three longitudinal modes are also the most conspicuous, but some modes above the third are also strongly excited. O f these, the fourth, fifth, and eighth modes can be identified through comparison with Rao & Schwab’s (1976) numerical determinations. The most striking feature of the eighth mode, often strongly excited, is a transverse (N-S) oscillation of the eastern half of the basin as a negative amphidrome (figure 32 b ). In spite of prior removal of a linear trend from the input data, the spectra exhibit a steep rise in power as the low-frequency end is approached, where interpretation is therefore difficult. However, examination of the frequency range below 4 c/d, in §§2( h ) and 3 ( e ) and in figure 11, establishes the following points: (i) for reasons discussed in the text, the semidiurnal tidal peak covers a narrower frequency range than peaks corresponding to the seiche modes; (ii) there is minor but persistent evidence of a co-oscillation of the main Michigan basin and Green Bay; (iii) diurnal oscillations arising from tidal and meterorological forcing, §4, are generated more strongly in the Superior than in the Michigan basin; (iv) no spectral peaks are unambiguously identified as surface manifestations of internal waves known to be present, for example in the near-inertial frequency range 1.3—1.4 c/d; and (v) there is a small but significant rise in power near 0.35 c/d in spectra from both basins. Possible but not yet verified explanations of this rise are: meteorological forcing; excitation of a rotational mode (Rao & Schwab 1976); or both. For Lake Michigan a possible further explanation is provided by excitation of the lowest gravitational mode of the combined Michigan-Huron basin, seen in the currents of the connecting straits (figure 12).

Interactions of sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) with blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were assessed in conscious rats while they rested quietly in a cloth sock (n = 7), roamed freely in their home cage (n = 6), and then after anesthesia with pentobarbital (30 mg/kg; n = 7). The power and coherence spectra below 3 Hz were calculated from data collected for 9.56 min. In the conscious rat, SNA spectral power peaked at 0.4 Hz, whereas the majority of spectral power for both BP and HR occurred at frequencies lower than 0.4 Hz. However, there was an inconspicuous peak in the BP power spectra at 0.4 Hz that was not seen in the HR spectra. Coherence between SNA and BP peaked at a frequency of approximately 0.4 Hz, the same frequency at which the SNA spectral peaks occurred. In contrast, at frequencies below 0.4 Hz where maximum BP power occurred, the coherence was considerably lower. Anesthesia with pentobarbital lowered spectral power for BP, SNA, and HR but essentially did not change the coherence between SNA and BP. Interactions between respiration and each of the other variables were weak in the conscious rat. However, prominent respiratory interactions at approximately 1.2 Hz were evident after anesthesia. These data indicate a close coupling between SNA and BP at 0.4 Hz, raising the possibility that the BP spectral power at 0.4 Hz reliably reflects sympathetic activity.

While the use of vinegar to fi ght against infections and other crucial conditions dates back to Hippocrates, recent research has found that vinegar consumption has a positive effect on biomarkers for diabetes, cancer, and heart diseases. Different types of vinegar have been used in the world during different time periods. Vinegar is produced by a fermentation process. Foods with a high content of carbohydrates are a good source of vinegar. Review of the results of different studies performed on vinegar components reveals that the daily use of these components has a healthy impact on the physiological and chemical structure of the human body. During the era of Hippocrates, people used vinegar as a medicine to treat wounds, which means that vinegar is one of the ancient foods used as folk medicine. The purpose of the current review paper is to provide a detailed summary of the outcome of previous studies emphasizing the role of vinegar in treatment of different diseases both in acute and chronic conditions, its in vivo mechanism and the active role of different bacteria.

SummaryLiposomes of pure phospholipids were used in a modified APTT test system and the role of phosphatidyl serine (PS) in determining the sensitivity of the test system to the presence of lupus anticoagulants was assessed. Six consecutive patients with lupus anticoagulants and seven haemophiliacs with anticoagulants directed at specific coagulation factors, were studied. Increasing the concentration of phospholipid in the test system markedly reduced the sensitivity to lupus anticoagulants but had marginal effect on the specific factor inhibitors. The same effect was achieved when the content of PS alone was increased in a vehicle liposome of constant composition.The results suggest that the lupus anticoagulants can best be detected by a screening method using an APTT test with a reagent of low PS content. The use of a reagent rich in PS will largely abolish the lupus anticoagulant’s effect on the APTT. An approach using the two different types of reagent may facilitate differentiation of lupus inhibitors from other types of anticoagulant.

The article is devoted to the study of evaluative tools used in modern French media in order to form the media image of a representative of the political elite. The techniques used in the creation of a memorial media portrait of Jacques Chirac (1932—2019), President of France from 1995 to 2007 are considered. The research material was the most prestigious French print media of various political orientations, published in late September — early October 2019 in connection with the death of the ex-President of the French Republic. The relevance of the research topic is dictated by the close attention of modern linguistics to axiological phenomena, differently presented in different types of discursive practices. The novelty of the study is due to the appeal to the analysis of the complex of evaluation tools used in the French print media when characterizing the former leader of the state during the nation’s farewell period. The estimated potential of the title of the article and its influence on the formation of the estimated vector of the entire text of the publication are shown. A systematic analysis of the assessment expression means, reflected in the memorial media portrait of the politician, is given. The factors that influenced the peculiarities of their use in this type of media portrait are revealed.

Misinformation often continues to influence people’s cognition even after corrected (the ‘continued influence effect of misinformation’, the CIEM). This study investigated the role of information relevance in the CIEM by questionnaire survey and experimental study. The results showed that information with higher relevance to the individuals had a larger CIEM, indicating a role of information relevance in the CIEM. Personal involvement might explain the effects of information relevance on the CIEM. This study provides insightful clues for reducing the CIEM in different types of misinformation and misinformation with varying relevance.

The nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) consists of a family of transcription factors involved in the regulation of a wide variety of biological responses. Growing evidence support that NF-κB plays a major role in oncogenesis as well as its well-known function in the regulation of immune responses and inflammation. Therefore, we made a review of the diverse molecular mechanisms by which the NF-κB pathway is constitutively activated in different types of human cancers and the potential role of various oncogenic genes regulated by this transcription factor in cancer development and progression. We also discussed various pharmacological approaches employed to target the deregulated NF-κB signaling pathway and their possible therapeutic potential in cancer therapy. Moreover, Syk (Spleen tyrosine kinase), non-receptor tyrosine kinase which mediates signal transduction downstream of a variety of transmembrane receptors including classical immune-receptors like the B-cell receptor (BCR), which can also activate the inflammasome and NF-κB-mediated transcription of chemokines and cytokines in the presence of pathogens would be discussed as well. The highlight of this review article is to summarize the classic and novel signaling pathways involved in NF-κB and Syk signaling and then raise some possibilities for cancer therapy.
