Currently, reconfigurable hardware devices feature a high density of heterogeneous resources to enable multitasking and offer flexibility in application needs. These concepts raise the need for efficient management of hardware tasks and hardware resources. The scheduling of hardware tasks is highly dependent on placement. Placement focuses on allocation of hardware resources required by the scheduled hardware tasks. In this paper, we propose novel three-level resource management that investigates enhancement of placement quality by reducing task rejection, configuration overheads, and by optimizing resource utilization. Improving placement quality will produce significant enhancement of performance for scheduling and overall execution time of the application in FPGA. Hence, the placement problem is formulated into a constrained optimization problem and resolved with powerful solvers using the Branch and Bound method. The obtained results of an application of heterogeneous hardware tasks show an average resource utilization of 36% of the available resources on the reconfigurable region and an overall overhead of 11% of total application running time, and we have eliminated the issue of task rejection. Compared to static implementation, the gain in resource utilization within the reconfigurable region achieves up to 43%.

Placement is an important constrained optimization problem in the design of very large scale (VLSI) integrated circuits [1–4]. Simulated annealing [5] and min-cut placement [6] are two of the most successful approaches to the placement problem. Min-cut methods yield less congested and more routable placements at the expense of more wire-length, while simulated annealing methods tend to optimize more the total wire-length with little emphasis on the minimization of congestion. It is also well known that min-cut algorithms are substantially faster than simulated-annealing-based methods. In this paper, a fast min-cut algorithm (ROW-PLACE) for row-based placement is presented and is empirically shown to achieve simulated-annealing-quality wire-length on a number of benchmark circuits. In comparison with Timberwolf 6 [7], ROW-PLACE is at least 12 times faster in its normal mode and is at least 25 times faster in its faster mode. The good results of ROW-PLACE are achieved using a very effective clustering-based partitioning algorithm in combination with constructive methods that reduce the wire-length of nets involved in terminal propagation.

AbstractIn this paper, we amend a multi-criteria methodology known as MURAME, to evaluate the creditworthiness of a large sample of Italian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, using as input their balance sheet data. This methodology produces results in terms of scoring and of classification into homogeneous rating classes. A distinctive goal of this paper is to consider a preference disaggregation method to endogenously determine some parameters of MURAME, by solving a nonsmooth constrained optimization problem. Because of the complexity of the involved mathematical programming problem, for its solution we use an evolutionary metaheuristic, coupled with a specific efficient initialization. This is combined with an unconstrained reformulation of the problem, which provides a reasonable compromise between the quality of the solution and the computational burden. An extensive numerical experience is reported, comparing an exogenous choice of MURAME parameters with our approach.

Distributed multimedia applications are characterized by timing constraints and end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements, and therefore need efficient management mechanisms to respond to transient changes in the load or the availability of the resources. This chapter presents a real-time distributed multimedia framework, based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), that provides resource management and Quality of Service for CORBA applications. The framework consists of multimedia components and resource management components. The multimedia components produce multimedia streams, and combine multimedia streams generated by individual sources into a single stream to be received by the users. The resource management components provide QoS guarantees during multimedia transmissions based on information obtained from monitoring the usage of the system’s resources.

Imaging through scattering media finds applications in diverse fields from biomedicine to autonomous driving. However, interpreting the resulting images is difficult due to blur caused by the scattering of photons within the medium. Transient information, captured with fast temporal sensors, can be used to significantly improve the quality of images acquired in scattering conditions. Photon scattering, within a highly scattering media, is well modeled by the diffusion approximation of the Radiative Transport Equation (RTE). Its solution is easily derived which can be interpreted as a Spatio-Temporal Point Spread Function (STPSF). In this paper, we first discuss the properties of the ST-PSF and subsequently use this knowledge to simulate transient imaging through highly scattering media. We then propose a framework to invert the forward model, which assumes Poisson noise, to recover a noise-free, unblurred image by solving an optimization problem.

In the context of the Moscow healthcare reform that has been carried out in recent years, the issues of evaluating the effectiveness of financing the healthcare system and the performance of medical organizations in providing medical care to the population are particularly relevant. Given the limited public resources allocated to the health sector, the quality of management of available financial, human and material resources is becoming more important. The article considers the application of the method of assessing the quality of resource management, introduced in Moscow since 2016, and its results in terms of evaluating the effectiveness of financial resources. It is revealed that the effectiveness of financial resources management is influenced by certain indicators that characterize the organization of management of the main activities of a medical organization.

Smartphone users require high Battery Cycle Life (BCL) and high Quality of Experience (QoE) during their usage. These two objectives can be conflicting based on the user preference at run-time. Finding the best trade-off between QoE and BCL requires an intelligent resource management approach that considers and learns user preference at run-time. Current approaches focus on one of these two objectives and neglect the other, limiting their efficiency in meeting users’ needs. In this article, we present UBAR, User- and Battery-aware Resource management, which considers dynamic workload, user preference, and user plug-in/out pattern at run-time to provide a suitable trade-off between BCL and QoE. UBAR personalizes this trade-off by learning the user’s habits and using that to satisfy QoE, while considering battery temperature and State of Charge (SOC) pattern to maximize BCL. The evaluation results show that UBAR achieves 10% to 40% improvement compared to the existing state-of-the-art approaches.

The widespread adoption of network function virtualization (NFV) leads to providing network services through a chain of virtual network functions (VNFs). This architecture is called service function chain (SFC), which can be hosted on top of commodity servers and switches located at the cloud. Meanwhile, software-defined networking (SDN) can be utilized to manage VNFs to handle traffic flows through SFC. One of the most critical issues that needs to be addressed in NFV is VNF placement that optimizes physical link bandwidth consumption. Moreover, deploying SFCs enables service providers to consider different goals, such as minimizing the overall cost and service response time. In this paper, a novel approach for the VNF placement problem for SFCs, called virtual network functions and their replica placement (VNFRP), is introduced. It tries to achieve load balancing over the core links while considering multiple resource constraints. Hence, the VNF placement problem is first formulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) optimization problem, aiming to minimize link bandwidth consumption, energy consumption, and SFC placement cost. Then, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to find a near-optimal solution for this optimization problem. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. The simulation results show that VNFRP can significantly improve load balancing by 80% when the number of replicas is increased. Additionally, VNFRP provides more than a 54% reduction in network energy consumption. Furthermore, it can efficiently reduce the SFC placement cost by more than 67%. Moreover, with the advantages of a fast response time and rapid convergence, VNFRP can be considered as a scalable solution for large networking environments.
