Plumbagin and its Cu (II) complex [Cu (plumbagin)2]·H2O have been synthesized, and their antioxidant activities towards the inhibitory effect on DPPH free radical, reducing power, total antioxidant capacity, and inhibition on lipid peroxidation were investigated. Plumbagin and its Cu (II) complex were found to exhibit scavenging activities on DPPH radical with the inhibitory rate of 41% and 24%, respectively. The reducing power of plumbagin was outstanding at the concentrations of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mg/mL, compared to Cu (II) complex and synthetic antioxidant 2,6-di-ter-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT); the highest level reached 1.333 for plumbagin and 0.581 for Cu (II) complex. Also, the inhibition on lipid peroxidation of plumbagin was higher than that of Cu (II) complex and BHT, 46.4% for plumbagin and 24.5% for Cu (II) complex. The results give a strong impact for designing anticancer drugs, combined with their potential cytotoxic and antioxidant activities, which can be targeted selectively against cancer cells and increase their therapeutic index and additional advantages over other anticancer drugs.

The total alkaloids (TAE) were obtained from the fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth. The antioxidant activities of TAE towards the inhibitory effect on 2, 2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, total antioxidant capacity, and inhibition on lipid peroxidation were investigated. TAE was found that the total antioxidant capacity and inhibitory lipid peroxidation are superior to synthetic antioxidant 2, 6-di-ter-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), but scavenging activity on DPPH radical is lower than that of BHT at the same condition.

This study aimed at evaluating the antioxidative activity of crude hsian-tsao extracted by acetone and the Fraction E purified by AB-8 macroporous resin chromatography column. The antioxidative activities, including the DPPH radical-scavenging effects, Fe2+-chelating ability, and reducing power as well as the inhibition of lipid peroxidation, were studied. Results demonstrated that both crude extract and Fraction E were more effective in the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the DPPH radical-scavenging ability than that in the Fe2+-chelating ability. Based on the inhibition of lipid peroxidation, the order of the antioxidant activities was follows: Fraction E >GA> crude extract >Vc. Fraction E seemed to be a promising product of natural antioxidants enriched with phenolic compounds

Objective: This study aimed to assess the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in vitro of Calotropis procera root bark. Methods: Anti-inflammatory activities of the ethanolic extract of root bark of C. procera and its fractions were evaluated on lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase (XO). Antioxidant activity was evaluated by trapping the 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), by the reducing power ferric reducing antioxidant power. Inhibitory powers of lipid peroxidation and of degradation of D-deoxyribose as well as the contents of phenolic and triterpene compounds were also evaluated. Results: Ethanolic extract showed interesting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Butanol fraction which is one of richest fractions for flavonoids (17.38±0.13 mg EQ/10 g extracts) showed the best percentages for inhibitions of XO (60.14±4.89%), degradation of D-deoxyribose (81.04±0.77%), and the DPPH radical (71.43±6.35%). Dichloromethane fraction which is the richest in triterpenes (1067.02±5.77 mg UAE/g extracts) showed the best percentages for inhibitions of lipoxygenase (56.45±1.15%) and of lipid peroxidation (82.45±0.73%). Ethyl acetate and residual aqueous fractions, respectively, showed the best activities of inhibiting H2O2 (75.38±0.76%) and for iron-reducing capacity (23.51±1.69 mg EAA/g extracts). Conclusion: Ethanolic extract from C. procera root bark and its fractions, their particular the butanol and dichloromethane one, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which could prevent or attenuate liver injury and its complications.

The flowers of M. velutina were extracted with ethanol to obtain a crude extract that was consecutively extracted using n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and water. The crude extract and fractions were studied for the chemical composition and antioxidant and antidiabetic activities. The extracts had various phytoconstituents, namely steroids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and glycosides. The aqueous extract had the highest total polyphenol (12.6 mg GAE/g extract) and total flavonoid (205.6 mg QE/g extract) content. The aqueous extract exhibited the strongest antioxidant activities in the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (EC50 = 4.0 µg/mL), reducing power assay (EC50 = 78.1 µg/mL), 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid radical cation assay (EC50 = 48.2 µg/mL), total antioxidant capacity assay (EC50 = 8.7 µg/mL) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay (EC50 = 9.3 µg/mL). The aqueous extract showed the strongest inhibitory effect on the activity of α-amylase (IC50 = 376.6 μg/mL) and α-glucosidase (IC50 = 69.7 μg/mL). The results showed that the aqueous extract of M. velutina flowers can be a promising candidate for the control of diabetes and oxidative stress. This is the first report about the chemical components and antioxidant and antidiabetic activities of M. velutina flower extracts.

Flavonoids was isolated from canavalia maritime by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) coupled with high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC). The antioxidant activities of flavonoids were investigated in vitro and evaluated by IC50. The results indicated that flavonoids possessed obvious reducing power and significant inhibitory effects on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical. These results suggest that canavalia maritime flavonoids could be a suitable natural antioxidant for humans.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the addition of dried lemongrass leaves (DLGL) powder, at different levels, on phenolics content, antioxidant activities, consumer acceptance and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation of roasted coffee (RC). Design/methodology/approach DLGL powder was incorporated at the levels of 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10% of RC weight. The total flavonoids (TF), total phenolics (TP) and antioxidant activity measured using a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and reducing power assay of RC, DLGL and binary mixture of them determined. The oxidative indices of coffee oil samples during storage were investigated. In addition, the sensory characteristics of RC fortified with different levels of DLGL powder were evaluated. Findings The TP content of DLGL powder was 1,100.32 mg/100 g DWb, nearly 1.2 times higher than found in RC beans. The TF content of RC enriched with 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10% DLGL were found to be around 1.05, 1.10, 1.15 and 1.20 times higher than that in the control coffee samples. RC supplemented with various levels of DLGL powder showed higher DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power activities. At the end of the storage period (six months), the acid, peroxide, P-Anisidine and total oxidation value values of RC supplemented with 10% DLGL powder were about 1.94, 2.52, 2.60 and 2.59 times as low as in the control sample without any addition of DLGL powder, respectively. RC containing 2.5% and 5.0% DLGL powder had significantly (p < 0.05) the highest sensory scores. Consequently, the addition of DLGL in coffee at up to a 5% ratio may have potential health benefits. Practical implications RC containing 2.5% and 5.0% DLGL powder had significantly (p = 0.05) the highest sensory scores. Originality/value Consequently, the addition of DLGL in coffee at up to a 5% ratio may have potential health benefits.

In the present study, the antioxidant property of 4 flavones (moslosooflavone, wogonin, isowogonin, and norwogonin) was evaluated using 6 different assays: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·), superoxide (O2 •−), and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging assays, ferrous iron chelation, reducing power, and total antioxidant capacity. The 4 flavones exhibited antioxidant activities with decreasing order as norwogonin > isowogonin >> wogonin> moslosooflavone. The present results demonstrated that norwogonin and isowogonin exhibited excellent antioxidant activity, which was mainly based on the presence of C-8 hydroxyl group.

Due to its natural origin and potent free-radical scavenging ability,Allium sativumL. could be used as a potential preventive intervention for free radical-mediated diseases.

Pulverized rhizome of Curcuma peliolata on hydrodistillation, afforded light yellow essential oil in the yield of 0.13% v/w. The chemical constituent of the essential oil was determined by GC-MS. Nine compounds representing 95.34 % of the total oil were identified. The major compounds of the oil were 2-methyl-5-pentanol, 1H-pyrrol-1-amine,2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-n,n,5-trimethyl, and curcumol. The distillated aqueous was extracted with dicloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and n-butanol. The DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power of the extracts were investigated. Curcumin and ascorbic acid were used as standard references. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was decrease in order: curcumin ascorbic acid EtOAc extract > DCM extract > n-butanol extract > aqueous extract. The EtOAc extract showed significantly highest inhibition of the radical scavenging activity with IC50 0.092 ± 0.001 mg/mL (curcumin and ascorbic acid (IC50 0.012 and 0.013 mg/mL, respectively (P<0.05)). While, the DCM extract showed highest reducing power with IC50 = 0.271 mg/mL which lower than that of standard curcumin (IC50 = 0.013 mg/mL) and ascorbic acid (IC50 = 0.002 mg/mL).Introduction

Abstract Two different non-specific proteolytic enzymes (papain and pepsin) and two carbohydrase enzymes (α-amylase and β-amylase) were used for the depolymerization of chitosan to produce chitooligosaccharides (COS). The COS produced using papain, pepsin, α-amylase and β-amylase were characterized for physico-chemical, structural, thermal and antioxidant activities. Chitooligosaccharides produced using pepsin enzyme had higher solubility compared to other three COS. Structural variation of chitosan and their oligosaccharides were studied by FTIR analysis and it revealed the existence of various structural difference among the oligosaccharides and chitosan. Thermal behavior of chitosan and oligosaccharides were examined using DSC analysis, and it exhibits difference in the glass transition temperature among the four oligosaccharides and native chitosan. Anti-oxidant analysis such as DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power revealed the antioxidant ability of chitooligosaccharides. Among the four COS, pepsin-COS had the highest DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power activity. According to the patterns of molecular weight reduction, antioxidant properties, thermal behavior properties, four enzymes α- amylase, β-amylase, pepsin and papain found suitable for hydrolyzing chitosan into chitooligosaccharide. As it is superior to chitosan, chitooligosaccharide can be utilized in food industry as bio-preservatives to enhance the quality, safety and shelf life of the products.
