Current researches show that the constant speed mode adopted by the existing commercial blood pump may cause damage to the body. The way to solve this problem is to produce pulsating flow by changing the speed of the blood pump’s impeller. But at present, the flow field of the blood pump is not clear, when it changes speed, and the coupling between blood pump and body has not been considered in the simulation of the flow field. A multiscale coupling model combining hemodynamics (0D) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (3D) was established in this paper to solve the problem, and a speed change curve consistent with the ventricular motion was selected. The hemodynamics, shear stress, and hemolysis changes of 6000 rpm at different amplitude (2000, 3000, and 4000 rpm) were simulated, analyzed, and compared with the constant speed (7000 rpm). The results show that the pressure difference obtained by simulation is consistent with the experimental results, and the flow generated by the natural heart still flows through the blood pump, thus changing the working point of the blood pump. When the blood pump works at the changing speed, it could produce more pulsation, and the shear stress and hemolysis in the blood pump increase with the rising of speed and flow. But according to the hemolysis score of a single cardiac cycle, the hemolysis value of the changing speed model at an amplitude of 4000 rpm is only 11.71% higher than that of constant speed at 7000 rpm.

The strongly swirling turbulent flow in the internal flow field of a high-speed spiral blood pump(HSBP), is one of important factors leading to the fragmentation of the red blood cell(RBC) and the hemolysis. The study on the turbulent injure principle of blood in the HSBP is carried out by using the theory of waterpower rotated flow field and the hemorheology. The numerical equation of the strongly swirling turbulent flow field is proposed. The largest stable diameter of red blood cells in the turbulent flow field is analyzed. The determinant gist on the red blood cell turbulent fragmentation is obtained. The results indicate that in the HSMP, when turbulent flow is more powerful, shear stress is weaker, the vortex mass with energy in flow field may cause serious turbulent fragmentation because of the diameter which is smaller than the RBC’s. The RBC’s turbulent breakage will occur when the Weber value is larger than 12.

The objective of this work is to conduct research on a mathematical model to assess hemolytic characteristics in a channel centrifugal blood pump developed by us with 2000–3400 rpm impeller speed range and 100–250 mmHg pressure drop in different parts of the pump flow path. Hemolysis index was measured at 1 to 10 L/min flow rate. The result was an estimate of the average magnitude of the shear stress (SS), taking into account the distribution in the pump, which ranged from 40 to 60 Pa. The most critical areas of the pump in terms of blood injury were evaluated. The maximum SSs were determined: 456 Pa in the impeller wheel zone and 533.3 Pa in the adjacent area of the body, with an exposure time of 0.0115 s and 0.0821 s respectively. In these zones, maximum hemolysis index values were 0.0420 and 0.0744 respectively. Based on the data obtained, these zones were optimized in terms of minimizing hemolysis.

Children 6 and 10 years of age and adults were asked how fast a toy car had to be to catch up with another car, the latter moving with a constant speed throughout. The speed change was required either after half of the time (linear condition) or half of the distance (nonlinear condition), and responses were given either on a rating scale (judgment condition) or by actually producing the motion (action condition). In the linear condition, the data patterns for both judgments and actions were in accordance with the normative rule at all ages. This was not true for the nonlinear condition, where children’s and adults’ judgment and also children’s action patterns were linear, and only adults’ action patterns were in line with the nonlinearity principle. Discussing the reasons for the misconceptions and for the action-judgment dissociations, a claim is made for a new view on the development of children’s concepts of time and speed.

AbstractThe human visual system can discriminate between animate beings vs. inanimate objects on the basis of some kinematic cues, such as starting from rest and speed changes by self-propulsion. The ontogenetic origin of such capability is still under debate. Here we investigate for the first time whether newborns manifest an attentional bias toward objects that abruptly change their speed along a trajectory as contrasted with objects that move at a constant speed. To this end, we systematically manipulated the motion speed of two objects. An object that moves with a constant speed was contrasted with an object that suddenly increases (Experiment 1) or with one that suddenly decreases its speed (Experiment 2). When presented with a single speed change, newborns did not show any visual preference. However, newborns preferred an object that abruptly increases and then decreases its speed (Experiment 3), but they did not show any visual preference for the reverse sequence pattern (Experiment 4). Overall, results are discussed in line with the hypothesis of the existence of attentional biases in newborns that trigger their attention towards some visual cues of motion that characterized animate perception in adults.

AbstractNumerical simulation is a useful tool in investigating the loading performance of rock bolts. The cable structural elements (cableSELs) in FLAC3D are commonly adopted to simulate rock bolts to solve geotechnical issues. In this study, the bonding performance of the interface between the rock bolt and the grout material was simulated with a two-stage shearing coupling model. Furthermore, the FISH language was used to incorporate this two-stage shear coupling model into FLAC3D to modify the current cableSELs. Comparison was performed between numerical and experimental results to confirm that the numerical approach can properly simulate the loading performance of rock bolts. Based on the modified cableSELs, the influence of the bolt diameter on the performance of rock bolts and the shear stress propagation along the interface between the bolt and the grout were studied. The simulation results indicated that the load transfer capacity of rock bolts rose with the rock bolt diameter apparently. With the bolt diameter increasing, the performance of the rock bolting system was likely to change from the ductile behaviour to the brittle behaviour. Moreover, after the rock bolt was loaded, the position where the maximum shear stress occurred was variable. Specifically, with the continuous loading, it shifted from the rock bolt loaded end to the other end.

The present study aims to investigate the optimized profile of the body through minimizing the Drag coefficient in certain Reynolds regime. For this purpose, effective aerodynamic computations are required to find the Drag coefficient. Then, the computations should be coupled thorough an optimization process to obtain the optimized profile. The aerodynamic computations include calculating the surrounding potential flow field of an object, calculating the laminar and turbulent boundary layer close to the object, and calculating the Drag coefficient of the object’s body surface. To optimize the profile, indirect methods are used to calculate the potential flow since the object profile is initially amorphous. In addition to the indirect methods, the present study has also used axial singularity method which is more precise and efficient compared to other methods. In this method, the body profile is not optimized directly. Instead, a sink-and-source singularity distribution is used on the axis to model the body profile and calculate the relevant viscose flow field.

This work analyzes the effects of the interaction between an oscillating sphere and free surface flows through the reconstruction of the flow field around the body and the analysis of the displacements. The experiments were performed in an open water channel, where the sphere had three different boundary conditions in respect to the flow, defined as h* (the ratio between the distance of the sphere upper surface from the free surface and the sphere diameter). A quasi-symmetric condition at h* = 2, with the sphere equally distant from the free surface and the channel bottom, and two conditions of asymmetric bounded flow, one with the sphere located at a distance of 0.003m from the bottom at h* = 3.97 and the other with the sphere close to the free surface at h* = 0, were considered. The sphere was free to move in two directions, streamwise (x) and transverse to the flow (y), and was characterized by values of mass ratio, m* = 1.34 (ratio between the system mass and the displaced fluid mass), and damping ratio, ζ = 0.004. The comparison between the results of the analyzed boundary conditions has shown the strong influence of the free surface on the evolution of the vortex structures downstream the obstacle.

On wet and windy days, the inclined cables of cable-stayed bridges can experience large amplitude, potentially damaging oscillations known as Rain-Wind Induced Vibration (RWIV). The phenomenon is believed to be the result of a complicated nonlinear interaction between rivulets of rain water that run down the cables and the wind loading on the cables due to the unsteady aerodynamic flow field. A numerical method has been developed at the University of Strathclyde, to simulate aspects of RWIV, the results of which can be used to assess the importance of the water rivulets on the instability. This combines a Discrete Vortex Method solver to determine the external flow field and unsteady aerodynamic loading and a pseudo-spectral solver based on lubrication theory to model the water on the surface of the body and which is used to determine the evolution and growth of the water rivulets under external loading. These two models are coupled to simulate the interaction between the aerodynamic field and the thin liquid film on a horizontal circular cylinder. The results illustrate the effects of various loading combinations, and importantly demonstrate rivulet formation in the range of angles previous research has indicated that these may suppress the Karman vortex and lead to a galloping instability. These rivulets are found to be of self limiting thickness in all cases.

The purpose of this paper is to study the air effects on transmission characteristics of hydro-viscous clutch and reveal the distribution law of the flow field of the oil film. The computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) simulation model of oil film with radial oil grooves between friction pairs is taken as the study object. Considering the air effects, the pressure field, two-phase distribution, transmission torque and temperature field of the oil film are analyzed comparatively by using the CFD technology. The results show that the presence of air changes the pressure and temperature distributions of the oil film. With increase of the absolute rotational speed, the air volume fraction increases and the radius value of the air-liquid boundary decreases under condition of constant speed difference, which makes the coverage rate of the oil film on the surface of the friction disks reduce and the transmission torque of the oil film decrease. These simulation results are attributed to the study of hydro-viscous-drive and its applications. This paper also can provide a theoretical basis for the mechanism of power transmission through oil film in the presence of air effects.
