The technological breakthrough of the Internet of Things (IoT) drives the emergence of a wide scope of smart IoT solutions in different domains. Advancing the different technological aspects of these solutions requires effective IoT implementations and experimentations. This is widely addressed following low-cost and scalable methods such as analytical modeling and simulation. However, such methods are limited in capturing physical characteristics and network conditions in a realistic manner. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative IoT testbed system which facilitates practical experimentation of different IoT solutions in an effective environment. The testbed design was developed towards a general-purpose multidimensional support of different IoT properties including sensing, communication, gateway, energy management, data processing, and security. The implementation of the testbed was realized based on integrating a set of robust hardware components and developing a number of software modules. To illustrate its effectiveness, the testbed was utilized to experiment with energy efficiency of selected IoT communication technologies. This resulted in lower energy consumption using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology compared to the Zigbee and 6LoWPAN technologies. A further evaluation study of the system was carried out following the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). As the study results indicated, the system provides a simple yet efficient platform for conducting practical IoT experiments. It also had positive impact on users’ behavior and attitude toward IoT experimentation.

In this chapter, the authors performed an analysis of the data extracted from 39 peer-reviewed scientific publications between 2015 and 2018 describing users' adoption of various mobile payment systems encompassing methods, technologies, adoption models, theories, variables of the adoption models and theories, as well as significant adoption factors. The analysis demonstrates that the technology acceptance model (TAM) is the most popular model to investigate users' adoption of mobile payment. Both the original and extended versions of TAM are studied broadly to examine the individual's intention to adopt mobile payment. In addition, the analysis of the results from this chapter demonstrates perceived compatibility has the strongest positive impact on the intention to use mobile payment technology whereas perceived risk has a negative relationship with the intention to use mobile payment technology.

A vast majority of traffic crashes in urban areas occur at signalized intersections. Roadway geometry, traffic control, adjacent land uses, and environmental factors at intersections often contribute to the high incidence of traffic crashes and injuries. A public-private partnership project to identify high-crash and high-risk locations in the city of Detroit was initiated in 1996. Eighteen candidate sites were selected, and an extensive engineering study was conducted to develop countermeasures to help alleviate the traffic crash problem at the selected sites. The Automobile Association of America, Michigan, was the private partner in this joint venture and, in partnership with the city of Detroit, was a major contributor to covering the cost of improvements. The selection of countermeasures was based on state-of-the-art methodology and analysis, and implementation of the selected countermeasures at some of the sites was undertaken as the initial phase of the project. A comprehensive before-and-after evaluation study was performed at three of the improved sites. The study revealed that the safety improvements that were implemented lowered both crash and severity experience. The differences between the before and after crash frequencies proved to be statistically significant. Additionally, a benefit-cost analysis at the study locations indicated extraordinary results. This research presents the evaluation study results and discusses the countermeasures and improvements that were the most successful in mitigating traffic crash problems at the selected study locations.

Purpose Multisided platforms (MSPs) have become omnipresent. Millennial consumers have taken well to MSPs. It has become imperative to explicate the process of adoption of MSPs by millennials. The purpose of this study is to comprehend the factors that lead to the adoption of MSPs by millennials beyond the factors identified in the technology acceptance model (TAM). Design/methodology/approach Data was collected from 252 respondents through a structured survey questionnaire to comprehend MSP adoption. Partial least squares structured equation modelling was applied for analysis. Findings The theoretical lens of TAM was applied for the study. Results indicated that over and above TAM, millennials’ intention to use of MSPs was moderated by ethical expectations, as well as ethnocentric thinking. The study, thus, extended TAM theoretical conversation by including factors of consumer ethnocentric behaviour and customer ethical considerations. Research limitations/implications This study modifies the TAM factors theoretically by including two new factors, namely, customers’ ethical expectations and ethnocentric thinking. Practical implications This study results would help MSP firm managers comprehend the importance of consideration of consumer ethnocentric behaviour and customer ethical considerations. Thus, managers have to include in their MSPs’ aspects of customers’ ethical expectations and ethnocentric thinking while marketing their MSPs’ while doing business with millennials. Originality/value This was one of the first studies that extended TAM by adding the factors of ethical expectations and ethnocentric thinking in the context of MSP adoption for millennial customers.

We conducted a consumer survey and used SPSS to examine the effects among technology acceptance model, theory of planned behavior, conformity and government low-carbon policies. The results of this study show that: 1. perceived usefulness and perceived ease-of-use have a significant and positive impact on green behavior attitude; green behavior attitude, green perceived behavior control, green subjective norms, and government low-carbon policies all have a significant and positive impact on green behavioral intention, and green behavioral intention also has a significant and positive impact on green consumption behavior. 2. The normative and informational influences in conformity both have a significant and positive impact on green subjective norms, with normative influence exerting a greater impact. 3. On average, female consumers expressed a significantly higher agreement than male consumers with regard to the technology acceptance model, the theory of planned behavior, and conformity, and married consumers expressed a higher agreement than single and divorced consumers with regard to the technology acceptance model. The above results could provide companies with reference for development and business strategies involving sustainable displays.

Owing chiefly to the lack of suitable technology solutions, India is experiencing both shortage and wastage of blood units. In addressing such a challenge, we explore the unique role of Blockchain and Internet-of-things technologies in the overall blood supply chain management as an appropriate technology solution. Our study employs an integrated Task-Technology Fit and Technology Acceptance Model to empirically test and identify key factors influencing the adoption intention of the Blockchain and Internet-of-things enabled system. With the need to preserve donor and recipient data integrity and data privacy, the respective state and national health departments strictly regulate blood banks. Accordingly, our study also explores the role of government in supporting and overseeing security concerns in the future adoption of the Blockchain and Internet-of-things technologies. Finally, a solution based on the Blockchain and Internet-of-things technologies to ensure the sufficient availability of blood units at the national level is envisioned.

The present study aims to enrich the research on online entrepreneurship education, improve the level and ability of entrepreneurship services in China, and improve the overall success rate of entrepreneurship. Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) proposed by researcher Davis, the study explores the application of TAM in online entrepreneurship education for new entrepreneurs. First, new entrepreneurs who are users of the online entrepreneurship education platform are selected as research objects, and then the influence of the four factors are studied, including perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, classroom self-efficacy, and perceived external control. Finally, the hypothesis proposed is tested. Results show that online entrepreneurship education influences the perceived ease of use of the user and perceived credibility: the quality of the online entrepreneurship education has a positive impact on the user's perceived usefulness, interactivity has a positive influence on perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, and interactivity positively influences the perceived ease of use of the user and perceived credibility. Perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived credibility have a positive impact on the behavioral intention of the users. The proposed TAM provides some technical and theoretical support for the application of TAM in online entrepreneurship education for new entrepreneurs.

This research investigates the impact of Hoftstede’s National Culture which mediated by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) on usage of emails among academician in Malaysian public universities. Data was collected by using survey questionnaires among 146 academic staff from two public universities in Malaysia. Path analysis was conducted using SmartPLS 2.0 to assess the usage of emails model. Study found that power distance (PD), uncertainty avoidance (UA) and collectivism (C) have negative impact on perceived ease of use (PEOU) of usage of emails. Study further discovered that PD, and C have negative influence on perceived usefulness (PU) of usage of emails. In addition, study found that masculinity (M) has no noteworthy impact on both PEOU and PU of usage of emails. Moreover, long-term orientation (LT) and Indulgence (I) were found to have noteworthy positive relationship with PEOU and PU on usage of emails. On technology acceptance model (TAM), PEOU and PU were found to have noteworthy positive impact on usage of emails (U) while PEOU has a noteworthy positive impact PU of usage of emails. This paper discusses the implications of these findings for future academic research and practice.

Anaerobic digestion using low-cost biodigesters (LCB) is a promising alternative for Colombian producers of non-centrifugal cane sugar (NCS). Since the integration of anaerobic digestion technology in this agro-industry is novel, it is critical to understand the factors that affect the acceptance behavior of such technology by NCS producers to develop future policies that promote the adoption of sustainable energy alternatives. This study aimed to analyze NCS producers’ behavioral intention to use LCB by utilizing an extended technology acceptance model (TAM). Data from a survey of 182 producers were used to evaluate the proposed model empirically. The extended TAM accounted for 78% of the variance in producers’ behavioral intention to use LCB. Thus, LCB acceptability could be fairly precisely predicted on the basis of producers’ intentions. This study’s findings contribute to research on the TAM and provide a better understanding of the factors influencing NCS producers’ behavioral intention to use LCB. Furthermore, this approach can assist policymakers at the local and global levels, given that NCS is produced in various developing countries worldwide.

Summary The Brazilian government encouraged the Integrated Production (IP) farming system adoption to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of intensive bean production in irrigated areas of the Brazilian savanna. By ensuring food-safety and the use of sustainable agricultural practices, IP may strengthen national agriculture competitiveness. Regardless of the government efforts to promote IP in the main agricultural regions and among the largest food growers, only few slowly adopted it. Therefore, studying the process of technology adoption is important to identify possible problems that could affect adoption and diffusion of this farming system. We applied a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explain the adoption and use of IP by the common beans growers from one of the most important bean production regions in Brazil. Ninety-three interviews were administered to different actors involved in beans production. A Structural Equation Model (SEM) following a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to identify the relationship between factors. The findings suggest that respondents have positive perceptions toward adopting IP. Perceived usefulness has a positive impact on attitude, and attitudes affect behavioral intention. However, the proposed model only partially explains IP adoption intentions.
