Purpose. Platelet parameter alteration such as platelet count and platelet indices are more common than in other blood cell lines due to diverse causative pathophysiological mechanisms in severe malaria infection. In malaria patients, no more studies evaluated platelet indices in relation to disease severity and prognosis. Therefore, this review assessed the current scientific knowledge on the potential role of platelet indices for the diagnostic marker of severe malaria infection. Results. Hence, after reviewing recent literatures, elevation of mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in addition to decreased plateletcrit and platelet counts is the known potential risk factor associated with warning signs of severe malaria. Thus, thrombocytopenia < 150 × 10 9 / L , MPV ≥ 9.05   fL , and PDW ≥ 14.550 % as well as significantly higher P-LCR and decrease in PCT are shown significant sensitivity and specificity as they are used as diagnostic and prognostic values in severe malaria infection. Conclusion. Platelet indices are useful predictors of malaria severity. Immature platelet fraction (IPF%) is raised in the case of severe malaria, and it was significantly more useful than MPV. Advanced research will further investigate the platelet index abnormality associated with specific age and gender among specific malaria species.

Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) includes ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), non-ST Elevation MyocardialInfarction (NSTEMI), and Unstable Angina (UA). Platelet plays an essential role in ACS pathogenesis. Immature PlateletFraction (IPF) and platelet indices can predict platelet activations. Platelet indices consist of platelet count, Mean PlateletVolume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW), plateletcrit (Pct). This study aimed to analyze the differences of IPF andplatelet indices among ACS patients. This study was an observational analytical cross-sectional study conducted inDr. Soetomo Hospital during May-September 2019. The subjects consisted of 30-STEMI, 25-NSTEMI, and 24-UA patients.The EDTA-samples were measured for platelet indices and IPF using Sysmex XN-1000. The differences between IPF andplatelet indices among STEMI, NSTEMI, and UA patients were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. The IPFvalues were significantly higher in STEMI patients than NSTEMI and UA patients. The IPF values of NSTEMI patients werehigher than UA patients. The MPV, PDW, and P-LCR were significantly higher in STEMI and NSTEMI compared to UA. TheMPV, PDW, and P-LCR values of NSTEMI patients were significantly higher than UA patients. The significant differencesbetween STEMI and NSTEMI toward UA might be caused by the more severe thrombotic conditions in myocardial infarctionpatients than UA. The IPF values were significantly different among each type of ACS patients gave an opportunity using thisparameter to differentiate the ACS types. The MPV, PDW, and P-LCR were significantly higher in myocardial infarctionpatients than UA patients, which also allowed them to use those parameters to differentiate both conditions.

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a major cause of maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality in pregnancy. A decreased platelet count is observed during the progression of preeclampsia, and is considered a marker of the severity of preeclampsia. Considering the role of the PDW, PCT and platelet indices during the disease, the aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using platelet indices as a severity marker for PE.Methods: This was a prospective, observational study, hospital-based study, from 2017-19 with 400 pregnant women being included on the basis of a predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, through antenatal clinic, and labour room of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, S. C. B. Medical College, Cuttack, Odisha, India.Results: Study found that platelet count and plateletcrit showed a significant negative correlation with MAP whereas platelet distribution width showed a maximum positive correlation. In the preeclampsia group, subjects with PCT <0.22% were at risk of developing severe disease with a sensitivity of 53.5% and a high specificity of 85.5%. The AUC of 0.75 showed that it has a good predictability. In the eclampsia group, subjects with PCT <0.16% had a risk of developing severe disease with a sensitivity of 89.5% and specificity of 73.7%. The AUC 0.9 shows PCT to be a good predictor for assessing severity of eclampsia.Conclusions: This study suggests that platelet distribution width and plateletcrit are useful in risk evaluation of preeclampsia. These are a valid measurement tool to predict the severe progression of PE even when normal platelet counts are observed.

Aim: To evaluate the role of platelet parameters in dengue fever and also to determine relationship of platelet parameters with platelet count and the severity of the disease. The platelet para Materials and methods: meters [platelet count, plateletcrit, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW)] of 50 dengue infected children were calculated using BC 3000 plus Mindray Automated Hematology Analyzer. Normal range of MPV is 7.5-11.5 . Plateletcrit cut off value in thrombocytopenia is 0.2-0.36%. The PDW reported varies with reference intervals ranging from 8.3 to 56.6%. Subjects were divided into four groups according to their platelet count on day 3 of illness (<20,000 cells/cumm, 20,000 to 50,000 cells/cumm, 50,000 to 100,000 cells/cumm and >100,000 cells/cumm). Platelet indices were studied among these groups and also the indices were evaluated with respect to the severity of disease as group A (dengue without warning signs), group B (dengue with warning signs and group C (severe dengue). Results: Male: female ratio was 28:22. Mean age of presentation was 7.8 + 2.2 years. Thirty-ve patients belonged to Group A, 26 to group B and 2 belonged to group C. PLT (cells/cumm) on Day 3 and Day 7 was 91,828 ±33,532 vs 195,371 + 70,586 in Group A patients (p<0.0001), 69,076 ±45,904 vs 163,230 + 85,053 in Group B patients (p=0.0018) 38,500 + 38,890 vs 86,000 + 28,284 in Group C patients (p=0.29). PCT (%) on Day 3 and Day 7 was 0.09 + 0.04 vs 0.18 + 0.06 in Group A patients (p<0.0001), 0.07 + 0.04 vs 0.15 + 0.07 in Group B patients (p=0.0009) and 0.04 + 0.04 vs 0.08 + 0.28 in Group C patients (p=0.84). MPV () on Day 3 and Day 7 was 10.73 + 1.07 vs 11.34 + 1.09 in Group A patients (p=0.0212), 10.41 + 1.39 vs 10.87 + 0.99 in Group B patients (p=0.3389), 9.35 + 1.62 vs 10.3±1.41 in Group C patients (p=0.59). PDW () on Day 3 and Day 7 was 14.46 ± 1.35 vs 13.22 + 1.10 in Group A patients (p=0.0001), 14.61 + 1.36 vs 13.0 + 0.76 in Group B patients (p=0.0011) and 14.5 + 1.84 vs 13.5 + 0.71 in Group C (p=0.54). Though MPV was lower in patients with platelet count <20,000 cells/cumm (8.57 + 0.5 ) as compared to other groups, it was not statistically signicant (p=0.325). PCT increases with increase in platelet count on Day 3 and Day 7 (p=0.000). Though PDW was lower on Day 3 in patients with platelet count <20,000 cells/cumm as compared to the other 3 groups, it was not statistically signicant (p=0.0740). Conclusion: Lower platelet count and low PCT are seen with severe dengue, increasing platelet count and PCT suggest recovery phase of dengue. MPV had no correlation with severity of dengue or level of thrombocytopenia suggestive that there is no role to predict severity of dengue. PDW does not uctuate with severity of dengue or level of thrombocytopenia

Dengue is a global arboviral disease of growing public health concern. Several parameters have been used to detect the infection and severity of dengue. Recent evidence suggests that platelet indices can be used to assess the severity and prognosis of dengue infection. This retrospective study aims at assessing the role of the platelet indices – Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width, (PDW), P-LCR (Platelet Large Cell Ratio) and Plateletcrit (PCT) and its correlation with the platelet count in 50 Dengue NS1 antigen positive cases and to find the sex ratio and the age-wise distribution of the dengue cases. The indices were obtained using an Automated Hematology analyzer and were compared with the platelet count, considering p-value <0.05 as statistically significant. Thrombocytopenia was found in a majority of the cases and PDW and PLCR were found to be inversely proportional to the platelet count. MPV was found to have no correlation with the platelet count. Hence, we conclude that Platelet count, PDW, and P-LCR can be used as predictors of Dengue infection and severity, whereas MPV cannot be used as a predictor of Dengue infection or severity.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Dengue is an endemic in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world and also in various parts of India. Recent evidence indicates that platelet indices can be used to assess the severity and prognosis of dengue. This study aimed to assess the role of the platelet indices-mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet to large cell ratio (P-LCR), plateletcrit (Pct) and hematological parameters like hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct) with the platelet count in dengue NS1 antigen positive cases.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> An observational cross-sectional study conducted on cases of dengue over a period of 3 months admitted with serological positivity (NS1 antigen) in a tertiary care hospital, Loni. The platelet indices like MPV, PDW, Pct, P-LCR and hematological parameters like Hb, Hct were noted using Sysmex XN-3100 Automated hematology analyzer and compared with platelet count.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Relationship between various platelet indices like MPV, PDW, P-LCR and PCT and hematological parameters like Hb, TLC and Hct were related with platelet count. Dengue positive cases were inversely related to MPV, PDW, P-LCR, Hb and Hct and directly related to Pct. In the present study Pct, P-LCR, Hb and Hct were statistically significant in correlation with platelet count.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Pct, P-LCR, Hb and Hct along with platelet count can be used to assess the predictive outcomes in case of dengue infection.</p><p>.</p>

Pulmonary embolism is caused by a thrombus that blocks the pulmonary artery. The role of the platelet is mainly relatedto the formation of thrombus. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of platelet indices in patients withpulmonary embolism. This study was a retrospective observational research involving 55 patients with and withoutpulmonary embolism at the period of January 2014 and June 2019 at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Central Hospital, Makassar.The diagnosis of pulmonary embolism was based on CT angiography. Platelet Indices (PI), Mean Platelet Volume (MPV),Platelet Distribution Width (PDW), and plateletcrit (Pct) were analyzed respectively in two groups. Thirty-one (56.3%)patients were diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. There was significant difference of MPV and Pct values betweenembolism and non-embolism group (9.3±1.5 fL vs. 9.5±0.7 fL, p=0.49) and (0.2±0.1% vs. 0.2±0.1%, p=0.82). Contrastingly,there was a significant difference in PDW value between the two groups (13.2±4.9 fL vs. 9.9±1.1 fL, p=0.002). ReceiverOperating Characteristics (ROC) analysis showed cut-off value ≥ 10.5 fL of PDW with a sensitivity of 77.4%, a specificity of75%, Positive Predictive Value (PPV) of 80%, and Negative Predictive Value (NPV) of 72%. Platelet indices (PDW) showed agood diagnostic value on pulmonary embolism disease with a cut-off value ≥ of 10.5fL.

BACKGROUND We wanted to evaluate the role of platelet indices in differentiating reactive and clonal thrombocytosis. METHODS This is a cross sectional observational study conducted for two years among 150 patients with platelet counts of 5 lac and above. Thrombocytosis and utility of platelet indices like Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) for the differential diagnosis of thrombocytosis were done. RESULTS Out of total 150 cases, 144 (96 %) had reactive thrombocytosis, and 6 (4 %) had clonal thrombocytosis. Infectious aetiology is seen in 64 (42.6 %), tissue injury 35 (23 %), rebound thrombocytosis 22 (14.6 %), anaemia 13 (8.6 %), multiple causes 8 (5.3 %), clonal aetiology 6 (4 %), and inflammatory 2 (1.3 %). Patients with reactive thrombocytosis showed a lower mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width compared to primary thrombocytosis. In reactive thrombocytosis MPV range, 6.0 - 8.0 fl with mean MPV 6.5 fl and PDW ranges from 14.0 - 16.2 % with mean PDW 15.3 %. In clonal thrombocytosis MPV range, 6.9 - 8.5 fl with mean MPV 7.9 fl and PDW range was 15.9 - 17.2 % with mean PDW 16.4 %. CONCLUSIONS On analysing the platelet counts and indices, patients with high counts, low MPV and PDW suggested reactive aetiology and patients with high counts and high MPV and PDW suggested clonal aetiology. This article examines the role of the intergenerational memory of the Second World War (WWII) in identity formation and political mobilization. An existing explanation in the ethnic-conflict literature is that strategic political leaders play a crucial role in constructing and mobilizing ethnic identities. However, based on 114 open-ended interviews with individuals born in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia, conducted in Serbia during 2008–2011, nearly a third of the respondents make spontaneous references to WWII in their statements, usually drawing parallels between the cycle of violence in the 1990s and that in the 1940s. The question this article asks, then, is why some respondents make references to WWII spontaneously while others do not. It is argued that intergenerational narratives of past cycles of violence also constitute a process of identity formation, in addition to, or apart from, other processes of identity formation. The respondents mention WWII violence in the context of the 1990s events because they “recognize” elements, such as symbols, discourse or patterns of violence, similar to those in the intergenerational narratives and interpret them as warning signs. Hence, individuals who had previously been exposed to intergenerational narratives may be subsequently more susceptible to political mobilization efforts.
