Recently, photocatalysis process has shown great potential as a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sustainable method for the water/wastewater treatment. Among that, g-C3N4 is one of the most promising photocatalyst and widely used for a variety of applications. In spite of some unique features such as strong reduction ability, active under visible light, nontoxic, and high stability, g-C3N4 photocatalytic capability under visible light is limited due to fast recombination rate of reactive charges. To deal with this issue, in this study, g-C3N4 is combined with GaN-ZnO for reducing the recombination rate of charge carriers and increasing the active sites. The g-C3N4/GaN-ZnO composite was characterized by several methods such as SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and BET. It is also observed that the composite with outstanding features can work effectively under visible light; thus, it is likely to be widely applied in environment treatment, especially in antibiotic residue with more than 90% of tetracycline was decomposed after 3 hours.

In this paper, we report the preparation of a new composite (TiO2/SiO2/γ-Fe2O3/rGO) with a high photocatalytic efficiency. The properties of the composite were examined by different analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), photoluminescence (PL), UV-Visible light diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and nitrogen gas physisorption (BET) studies. The photocatalytic efficiency of the proposed composite was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under UV and visible light, and the results were compared with titanium dioxide (TiO2), where degradation increased from 30% to 84% and 4% to 66% under UV and visible light, respectively. The significant increase in photocatalytic activity may be explained by the higher adsorption of dye on the surface of the composite and the higher separation and transfer of charge carriers, which in turn promote active sites and photocatalytic efficiency.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) represent a wide range of compounds, whose complete elimination from wastewaters by conventional methods is not always guaranteed, posing human and environmental risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), based on the generation of highly oxidizing species, lead to the degradation of these ECs. In this context, TiO2 and ZnO are the most widely used inorganic photocatalysts, mainly due to their low cost and wide availability. The addition of small amounts of nanoclusters may imply enhanced light absorption and an attenuation effect on the recombination rate of electron/hole pairs, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity. In this work, we propose the use of silver nanoclusters deposited on ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO–Ag), with a view to evaluating their catalytic activity under both ultraviolet A (UVA) and visible light, in order to reduce energetic requirements in prospective applications on a larger scale. The catalysts were produced and then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). As proof of concept of the capacity of photocatalysts doped with nanoclusters, experiments were carried out to remove the azo dye Orange II (OII). The results demonstrated the high photocatalytic efficiency achieved thanks to the incorporation of nanoclusters, especially evident in the experiments performed under white light.

CuS hexagonal nanosheet/graphene was fabricated by a facile one-pot microwave-thermal method. The samples possess excellent photocatalytic activity for degradation of organic pollutant under visible light. The high photocatalytic activity was attributed to the deposition of CuS hexagonal nanosheet onto graphene. CuS nanosheet serves as a transporter which efficiently inhibits the recombination of the photo-induced charge carriers in the nanocomposites. The developed method demonstrates a facile approach towards the synthesis of two-dimensional semiconductor-graphene nanocomposites with excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light.

To improve the high charge carrier recombination rate and low visible light absorption of {001} facets exposed TiO2 [TiO2(001)] nanosheets, few-layered MoS2 nanoparticles were loaded on the surfaces of TiO2(001) nanosheets by a simple photodeposition method. The photocatalytic activities towards Rhodamine B (RhB) were investigated. The results showed that the MoS2–TiO2(001) nanocomposites exhibited much enhanced photocatalytic activities compared with the pure TiO2(001) nanosheets. At an optimal Mo/Ti molar ratio of 25%, the MoS2–TiO2(001) nanocomposites displayed the highest photocatalytic activity, which took only 30[Formula: see text]min to degrade 50[Formula: see text]mL of RhB (50[Formula: see text]mg/L). The active species in the degradation reaction were determined to be h[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]OH according to the free radical trapping experiments. The reduced charge carrier recombination rate, enhanced visible light utilization and increased surface areas contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic performances of the 25% MoS2–TiO2(001) nanocomposites.

In this paper, a novel heterostructure of 0D/3D-CdSe/Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text] pyramidal photocatalyst was synthesized and characterized. It exhibited significantly photocatalytic efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of the tetracycline than pure Bi[Formula: see text]TiO2 and CdSe and showed high stability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity might be attributed to the formation of heterostructure between CdSe QDs and 3D Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text], in which CdSe QDs served as electron trapper to improve the separation of photodegradation electron–hole pairs, and provided a number of active adsorption sites for the photogenerated of pollutants. The photocatalytic mechanism of 0D/3D-CdSe/Bi[Formula: see text]TiO[Formula: see text] pyramidal heterostructure was also proposed.
