Pedestrians’ unsafe behavior is one of the most critical factors causing traffic incidents in China. The primary objective of this study is to explore the cause of pedestrians’ unsafe behavior and provide possible solutions. We interviewed pedestrians and experts to investigate pedestrians’ unsafe behaviors. Results from interviews indicated that pedestrians were likely to exhibit unsafe behavior at intersections owing to use of smartphones, reluctance to obey the rules, and unawareness of risk. According to the experts, attracting the attention of pedestrians and guiding them to exhibit safe behaviors can improve their safety. Based on these results, we designed “LookMe,” which is a multimedia information system placed at the intersections, to guide pedestrians across the road and improve their experience of waiting in traffic. The results of user tests indicated that pedestrians had relatively high acceptance of LookMe. Moreover, participants wanted to see diverse multimedia information on the screen of LookMe such as news, videos, maps, and traffic information. Findings from this study can be useful in understanding why Chinese pedestrians exhibit unsafe behaviors and proposing effective solutions to enhance their safety.

The Travel Time Information System (TTIS) is an Intelligent Traffic Control System installed in Poland. As is common, travel time is the only factor in the decision about rerouting traffic, while a route recommendation may consider multiple criteria, including road safety. The aim of the paper is to analyze the safety level of the entire road network when traffic is rerouted on paths with different road categories, intersection types, road environments, and densities of access points. Furthermore, a comparison between traffic operation and road safety performance was carried out, considering travel time and delay, and we predicted the number of crashes for each possible route. The results of the present study allow for maximizing safety or traffic operation characteristics, providing an effective tool in the management of the rural road system. The paper provides a methodology that can be transferred to other TTISs for real-time management of the road network.

In order to develop an efficient and safe road there are many methods have been implemented to measure the volume of traffic, to evaluate the road safety level and the others. However based on current practices these methods are very costly as well as complicated. In this paper we present the outcomes of the evaluation on several geosocial networks and transportation networks such as Twitter, Google Map and Waze. The evaluations have been done on the architecture, data inputs and outputs. These findings may give an overview on how all these methods work and how the outputs might be used to improve future road planning.

A large number of accidents and scientific researches show that miners’ unsafe behavior affects coal mine safety production seriously. In order to effectively reduce the incidence of miners’ unsafe behavior, to improve their safety level, and reduce accidents caused by it, this paper used gray relational analysis method to analyze the miners’ unsafe behavior of W mine and quantitatively calculated the risk value of miners’ unsafe behavior. The results showed that the risk value of unsafe behavior in violation of labor discipline was 0.4358, which was much higher than that of other miners’ unsafe behaviors. Therefore, unsafe behavior in violation of labor discipline was determined as the key point of control in the next stage. Then, GM (1, 1) method was used to establish a predicted model for unsafe behavior, to predict the number of unsafe behaviors in violating labor discipline in next quarter, and to determine reasonable unsafe behavior control target. This study plays a driving role in controlling unsafe behaviors of miners and improving safe production water of coal mine.

This field action study in five Indian major organizations includes the reviews of behavior based safety (BBS) implementation, the road-map and action plan to implement BBS approach, and behavioral trends from a large gas company, two aluminum plants, a shipbuilding company, and an engineering plant. A mix of qualitative as well as quantitative data presented in this article would hopefully be useful for companies considering implementing BBS in order to achieve zero-accident/injury-free culture at their workplaces. A comparison of the five multinational organizations all over India revealed the behavioral trends on an average as follows: safe behaviors are 70%, unsafe behaviors as 30%, corrections of unsafe behavior as 67%, and interestingly safe behaviors went up to 90%, which means there is a 20% increase insafe behavior after corrections by all-category observers. The findings reveal that the unsafe/at-risk behaviors are rooted in organizational culture. Hence in order to achieve total safety culture, beyond behavioral safety implementation, the organizational behavior culture domains need attention of the corporate managements such as the quality of construction at project stage, the production target pressures, adequate resources (manpower and materials), sync in safety emphasis among all managers at different levels in the organization.

Results of a study of an actual scientific and technical problem of determining the road safety level on road sections are presented in the paper. The aim of the study is to develop an express method for assessing road safety based on improving the method of the final accident rate by reducing the partial accident rate with the required accuracy of determining the safety level on public roads. The formalization of the relationship between the parameters of road traffic conditions has been carried out to study the level of safety on highways. Latent factors of the parameters of traffic conditions have been obtained on the basis of reduction of their aggregate by the method of principal components, taking into account the relationship of partial accident rates. This condition has allowed to develop analytical models for determining road safety for implementation in the practice of conducting a road safety audit. A method for identifying hazardous areas on highways has been proposed in the paper. It includes 11 parameters of road conditions out of 18 partial accident rates proposed in the prototype and regulatory documents of Ukraine. The adequacy of the model is determined by deviation values of the obtained data according to the prototype model from the values of the relative accident rate, which were 3.22 and 18.61, respectively. The proposed model reduces the deviation value by six times and affects the accuracy of determining the safety level. Experimental studies have been conducted on 79 km of highways (on 385 sectors with constant values of traffic conditions parameters). The results of a comparative analysis of the safety level for the prototype model and the developed model have been identical and shown a decrease in time and labor costs by 1.6 times without loss of accuracy. Thus, the developed methodology is recommended to be applied for determining the potential danger of road sections during an express analysis of the road safety or when conducting a safety audit at various stages of the road life cycle.

Road traffic accidents come at a high price: 1.25 million road traffic deaths occurred globally in 2013. As the road network and the environmental conditions contribute significantly in the cause of accidents, it is crucial to understand where and when they occur, in order to plan actions for road safety improvement. For this reason, the Region of the North Aegean, Greece, in collaboration with the University of the Aegean, has established a spatial database and a web-based geographic information system (webGIS) for the registration, storage, visualization and analysis of the traffic accidents occurred in its jurisdiction. In this article, besides the development and operation of the system, the authors present a spatio-temporal analysis of the data collected since 2004 for the island of Lesvos. Hot spots and risky periods were identified, leading to useful conclusions and directions for road safety improvements.
