Sacred groves are forest patches conserved by the local people interwined with their socio-cultural and religious practices.  An extricable link between the past and present society in terms of religion, socio-culture, heritage and biodiversity exists in the sacred groves.  It is distributed globally where ethnic indigenous communities live.  Several animals and plants that are threatened in forests are still abundant and well conserved in such sacred groves.  The taboos, religious belief and sacredness play a significant role in promoting sustainable utilization and conservation.  In this regard, the study of a sacred grove in the district of West Midnapore in West Bengal highlighting the tradition may provide a powerful tool for ensuring biodiversity conservation through community participation.

Sacred groves are forest patches being conserved by tribal people. Sacred groves are closely associated with religious practices, social duties and taboos. The present study attempts show a key role play to conserve plant species by Kansari Mavli sacred grove. The sacred grove is situated in songadh range of vyara division, Gujarat state. Due to excess use of forest resources for timber, fodder and food, forest cover areas are rapidly decreasing. This forest patch has rich plant diversity and is protected by local people. Total 149 plant species are recorded, studied and collected

Sacred groves are small forest patches conserved by local people through socio-religious and historical beliefs. Gadi Central Pandam is one of the oldest sacred groves and protected more than 300 years due to its various religious, historical and archaeological significances. It is situated in the Sumin Resrve Forest of Rangpo Block of East Sikkim District. The sacred grove harbors a wide variety of plant species. This grove is facing serious threats due to various developmental activities. Therefore, it is suggested here to create awareness among the native people about the traditional values of this sacred grove and environmental benefits to the region and better sustenance of mankind by conserving the biodiversity of the region. The native people should also be encouraged to involve actively in protection and sustainable conservation managements of this grove for posterity.

Social practices play a crucial role in the conservation of the environment and biodiversity. The present study was carried out to explore the plant resources, their biological spectrum, leaf size spectra, conservation status and management of the existing vegetation of a sacred grove, namely Kalua Sarnd Than (KST) in the Jhargram district of West Bengal in India. Floristic elements of the study area revealed that the vegetation was diverse and composed of 150 species belonging to 141 genera distributed over 60 families under 31 orders according to APG IV classification. The study area being a sacred grove is fairly undisturbed and protection of germplasm in the grove is maintained through the traditional beliefs. The present study, thus, could be used as an inspiring example in India for other sacred groves for phytoclimatic study.

 The study was conducted in two sacred groves of Kathmandu Valley, Pashupati Sacred Grove, and Bajrabarahi Sacred Grove, aiming to analyze the diversity of tree species and their role in conserving biodiversity. Parallel transects with concentric circular plot survey methods were applied for data collection. During the study, 23 tree species belonging to 22 genera and 15 families were recorded in Pashupati sacred grove, whereas only 19 tree species belonging to 16 genera and 13 families were recorded from Bajrabarahi Sacred Grove. The Shannon-Weiner diversity indices were higher (H=1.91) in Pashupati Sacred Grove compared to Bajrabarahi Sacred Grove, with 1.80 Shanon-Weiner Indices. Three types of forest were recorded from Pashupati Sacred Grove, namely the Schima-Pyrus forest, Myrsine-Persea forest, and Quercus-Myrsine forest, and only one Neolitsiacuipala forest from Bajrabarahi Sacred Grove. The sacred grove is one of the pioneers and community-based management regimes of the forest resource management system. It plays a decisive role in biodiversity conservation as it associated with many taboos and belief systems, thus providing a better opportunity for conservation compared to that of the government management system.

The dairy industry produces large amounts of whey as a by- product or co-product, which has led to considerable environmental problems due to its high organic matter content. Over the past decades, possibilities of more environmentally and economically efficient whey utilisation have been studied, primarily to convert unwanted end products into a valuable raw material. Sustainable whey management is mostly oriented to biotechnological and food applications for the development of value-added products such as whey powders, whey proteins, functional food and beverages, edible films and coatings, lactic acid and other biochemicals, bioplastic, biofuels and similar valuable bioproducts. This paper provides an overview of the sustainable utilization of whey and its constituents, considering new refining approaches and integrated processes to covert whey, or lactose and whey proteins to high value-added whey-based products.

Sacred groves are the fairly well-protected system of community-based conservation of tree patches on account of their association with village gods, and repository of many rare and threatened elements of biodiversity. There are, however, few publications on lichens of sacred groves. The lichens have long been regarded as sensitive indicators for monitoring environmental state. The present study reports one hundred and sixteen species of lichens from forty-four genera of nineteen families in four selected sacred groves of Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal. These lichens represent two different growth forms, i.e. crustose (105 species) and foliose (11 species). Shorea robusta, a dominant tree species in two sacred groves bears the highest lichen diversity with seventy-four species. To better understand the related biodiversity and climate, this work is likely to promote further studies on lichen diversity in other regions of West Bengal.

Sacred groves are one of the finest examples of informal way of conserving the forest wealth. Baseline data collection of their diversity, distribution and regeneration capacity becomes necessary for the management and conservation of these undisturbed forest patches. In this context, the present investigation was carried out using random quadrat method in the sacred groves of Virajpet, Karnataka, India. A total of 132 tree species belonging to 113 genera and 45 families were identified within five sacred groves. Higher basal area (51.73-85.65 m2/ha) and tree density (453.33-515.9 individuals/ha) were observed as compared to other forests of Western Ghats region. The present investigation has revealed a healthy regeneration of tree species. Seedling and sapling composition differed to some extent from the mature tree species composition which could be used in predicting the future possibilities. Protection and conservation of such sacred groves should be of interest, for better regeneration of the rich diversity they harbour.

This concluding chapter looks at the discovery of a perplexing set of documents created in New Spain. Referred to as títulos primordiales, or primordial titles, the sources described the founding of Indigenous communities in the aftermath of the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. The títulos resonate strongly with other colonial documents of futuremaking and the shared ways of relating to time surveyed throughout this book. The Indigenous authors of the primordial titles engaged in a radical act of situating themselves in time: they marshaled the resources of the past, the resources of memory, and the resources of tradition to achieve goals in the present and craft diverse futures. Sometimes they presented their assembled resources as a narrative of the sixteenth-century present, at other times in the form of history or chronicle.

AbstractIndigenous communities in Canada are over-represented with respect to poor water quality and water advisories. To date, approaches to solve this water crisis have been founded in the Western Science (WS) context with little to no consultation or dialogue with those communities most impacted, and without regard for culture. A literature review was undertaken to: (i) document Indigenous Knowledge (IK), and perspectives regarding water and (ii) to identify current local water security tools utilized by Indigenous communities. The aim is to provide sound evidence regarding the value of ownership and leadership by Indigenous communities in the context of current and appropriate resources available to (re)claim these roles. Solutions must remain consistent with, and founded upon, traditional Indigenous worldviews and cultural values to ensure sustainable water security. Literature reviewed from the past ten years revealed one overarching creation theme with three water-specific themes in Indigenous communities; namely, water from natural sources, water as a life-giving entity, and water and gender. Ultimately, there needs to be a new framing of local water security with the development of tools which engage IK and WS in order to assess local water security and appropriately inform interventions, policies, regulations and legislation.

Sacred groves act as a treasure house for rare and medicinal plants. Apart from the quantitative analysis quantitative approach to sacred grove gives the potential species and importance of sacred grove, which is the main focuses of this work. There are many sacred grooves are present at Kannur district in whichVaneeswaram Kavu is one of the important one. The flora of sacred groves of has analysed taxonomically and phytosociologically. A total of 64 vascular plants falling under 61 genera and 43 families were documented. About 12 species are reported in the red listed category. In phytosociological studies specieslike, Elaeocarpus serratus, Erycibe paniculata and Scleria lithosperma were showing higher IVI. The devastation of species diversity in the study area represent there is an urgent need for regeneration of the species for conservation of biodiversity.
