This research work illustrates an approach to the design of controllers for self-assembling robots in which the self-assembly is initiated and regulated by perceptual cues that are brought forth by the physical robots through their dynamical interactions. More specifically, we present a homogeneous control system that can achieve assembly between two modules (two fully autonomous robots) of a mobile self-reconfigurable system without a priori introduced behavioral or morphological heterogeneities. The controllers are dynamic neural networks evolved in simulation that directly control all the actuators of the two robots. The neurocontrollers cause the dynamic specialization of the robots by allocating roles between them based solely on their interaction. We show that the best evolved controller proves to be successful when tested on a real hardware platform, the swarm-bot. The performance achieved is similar to the one achieved by existing modular or behavior-based approaches, also due to the effect of an emergent recovery mechanism that was neither explicitly rewarded by the fitness function, nor observed during the evolutionary simulation. Our results suggest that direct access to the orientations or intentions of the other agents is not a necessary condition for robot coordination: Our robots coordinate without direct or explicit communication, contrary to what is assumed by most research works in collective robotics. This work also contributes to strengthening the evidence that evolutionary robotics is a design methodology that can tackle real-world tasks demanding fine sensory-motor coordination.

In evolutionary robotics role allocation studies, it is common that the role assumed by each robot is strongly associated with specific local conditions, which may compromise scalability and robustness because of the dependency on those conditions. To increase scalability, communication has been proposed as a means for robots to exchange signals that represent roles. This idea was successfully applied to evolve communication-based role allocation for a two-role task. However, it was necessary to reward signal differentiation in the fitness function, which is a serious limitation as it does not generalize to tasks where the number of roles is unknown a priori. In this paper, we show that rewarding signal differentiation is not necessary to evolve communication-based role allocation strategies for the given task, and we improve reported scalability, while requiring less a priori knowledge. Our approach for the two-role task puts fewer constrains on the evolutionary process and enhances the potential of evolving communication-based role allocation for more complex tasks. Furthermore, we conduct experiments for a three-role task where we compare two different cognitive architectures and several fitness functions and we show how scalable controllers might be evolved.


The review article discusses the possibilities of using fractal mathematical analysis to solve scientific and applied problems of modern biology and medicine. The authors show that only such an approach, related to the section of nonlinear mechanics, allows quantifying the chaotic component of the structure and function of living systems, that is a priori important additional information and expands, in particular, the possibilities of diagnostics, differential diagnosis and prediction of the course of physiological and pathological processes. A number of examples demonstrate the specific advantages of using fractal analysis for these purposes. The conclusion can be made that the expanded use of fractal analysis methods in the research work of medical and biological specialists is promising.

AbstractGraph mining is a well-established research field, and lately it has drawn in considerable research communities. It allows to process, analyze, and discover significant knowledge from graph data. In graph mining, one of the most challenging tasks is frequent subgraph mining (FSM). FSM consists of applying the data mining algorithms to extract interesting, unexpected, and useful graph patterns from the graphs. FSM has been applied to many domains, such as graphical data management and knowledge discovery, social network analysis, bioinformatics, and security. In this context, a large number of techniques have been suggested to deal with the graph data. These techniques can be classed into two primary categories: (i) a priori-based FSM approaches and (ii) pattern growth-based FSM approaches. In both of these categories, an extensive research work is available. However, FSM approaches are facing some challenges, including enormous numbers of frequent subgraph patterns (FSPs); no suitable mechanism for applying ranking at the appropriate level during the discovery process of the FSPs; extraction of repetitive and duplicate FSPs; user involvement in supplying the support threshold value; large number of subgraph candidate generation. Thus, the aim of this research is to make do with the challenges of enormous FSPs, avoid duplicate discovery of FSPs, and use the ranking for such patterns. Therefore, to address these challenges a new FSM framework A RAnked Frequent pattern-growth Framework (A-RAFF) is suggested. Consequently, A-RAFF provides an efficacious answer to these challenges through the initiation of a new ranking measure called FSP-Rank. The proposed ranking measure FSP-Rank effectively reduced the duplicate and enormous frequent patterns. The effectiveness of the techniques proposed in this study is validated by extensive experimental analysis using different benchmark and synthetic graph datasets. Our experiments have consistently demonstrated the promising empirical results, thus confirming the superiority and practical feasibility of the proposed FSM framework.

AbstractWe wanted to study the ability of our brains and bodies to be augmented by supernumerary robot limbs, here extra fingers. We developed a mechanically highly functional supernumerary robotic 3rd thumb actuator, the SR3T, and interfaced it with human users enabling them to play the piano with 11 fingers. We devised a set of measurement protocols and behavioural “biomarkers”, the Human Augmentation Motor Coordination Assessment (HAMCA), which allowed us a priori to predict how well each individual human user could, after training, play the piano with a two-thumbs-hand. To evaluate augmented music playing ability we devised a simple musical score, as well as metrics for assessing the accuracy of playing the score. We evaluated the SR3T (supernumerary robotic 3rd thumb) on 12 human subjects including 6 naïve and 6 experienced piano players. We demonstrated that humans can learn to play the piano with a 6-fingered hand within one hour of training. For each subject we could predict individually, based solely on their HAMCA performance before training, how well they were able to perform with the extra robotic thumb, after training (training end-point performance). Our work demonstrates the feasibility of robotic human augmentation with supernumerary robotic limbs within short time scales. We show how linking the neuroscience of motor learning with dexterous robotics and human-robot interfacing can be used to inform a priori how far individual motor impaired patients or healthy manual workers could benefit from robotic augmentation solutions.

In the EAEU countries, unfortunately, entrepreneurship has not yet become a driver of economic development. Informal institutions can be considered a significant barrier to the development of entrepreneurship. The formation of a positive image of an entrepreneur is a necessary condition for the development of entrepreneurial activity and the strengthening of trust between business, society and government. Objective: to determine the direction of forming a positive image of an entrepreneur in the EAEU countries for the development of the entrepreneurial layer of society. Research methods: An abstract-logical approach is used based on a system analysis of the formation of a positive image of an entrepreneur. The analysis is based on the data of the international project Global Monitoring of Entrepreneurship, and the results of research work in the SIU-branch of the RANEPA. The correlation between the attitude to the image of the entrepreneur and entrepreneurial activity is proved. In higher education institutions, it is necessary to develop entrepreneurial education. At the same time, digital educational technologies should be widely applied, soft skills should be formed. The media have significant potential for impact on society, constitute the main PR tool. Material on promoting entrepreneurship should be presented in new online media forms: forums, blogs, online conferences, Internet messengers integrated into the mobile phone interface. The formation of a stable positive image of an entrepreneur among all sectors of the population will strengthen trust between society and businesses, business and the state to realize the entrepreneurial potential of the EAEU countries.

SummaryImage analysis with the aid of the computer has rapidly developed over the last few years. There are many possibilities of making use of this development in the medical and biological field. This paper is meant to give a rather general overview of recent systematics regarding the existing methodology in image analysis. Furthermore, some parts of these systematics are illustrated in greater detail by recent research work in the German Cancer Research Center. In particular, two applications are reported where special emphasis is laid on mathematical morphology. This relatively new approach to image analysis finds growing interest in the image processing community and has its strength in bridging the gap between a priori knowledge and image analysis procedures.

Evolutionary robotics (ER) is a powerful approach for the automatic synthesis of robot controllers, as it requires little a priori knowledge about the problem to be solved in order to obtain good solutions. This is particularly true for collective and swarm robotics, in which the desired behavior of the group is an indirect result of the control and communication rules followed by each individual. However, the experimenter must make several arbitrary choices in setting up the evolutionary process, in order to define the correct selective pressures that can lead to the desired results. In some cases, only a deep understanding of the obtained results can point to the critical aspects that constrain the system, which can be later modified in order to re-engineer the evolutionary process towards better solutions. In this article, we discuss the problem of engineering the evolutionary machinery that can lead to the desired result in the swarm robotics context. We also present a case study about self-organizing synchronization in a swarm of robots, in which some arbitrarily chosen properties of the communication system hinder the scalability of the behavior to large groups. We show that by modifying the communication system, artificial evolution can synthesize behaviors that scale properly with the group size.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are currently one of the major research topics in Grid Computing, as they serve as a foundation for reliable and predictable Grids. SLAs define an explicit statement of expectations and obligations in a business relationship between provider and customer. Thus, SLAs should guarantee the desired and a-priori negotiated Quality of Service (QoS), which is a mandatory prerequisite for the Next Generation Grids. This development is proved by a manifold research work about SLAs and architectures for implementing SLAs in Grid environments. However, this work is mostly related to SLAs for standard, monolithic Grid jobs and neglects the dependencies between different steps of operation. The complexity of an SLA-specification for workflows grows significantly, as characteristics of correlated sub-jobs, the data transfer phases, the deadline constraints and possible failures have to be considered. Thus, an architecture for an SLA-aware workflow implementation needs sophisticated mechanisms for specification and management, sub-job mapping, data transfer optimization and fault reaction. Therefore, this paper presents an architecture for SLA-aware Grid workflows. The main contributions are an improved specification language for SLA-aware workflows, a mapping and optimization algorithm for sub-job assignment to Grid resources and a prototype implementation using standard middleware. Experimental measurements prove the quality of the development.

<p>Single amino acid based self-assembled structures have gained a lot of interest recently owing to their pathological significance in metabolite disorders. There is plethora of significant research work which illustrate amyloid like characteristics of assemblies formed by aggregation of single amino acids like Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Tryptophan, Cysteine and Methionine and its implications in pathophysiology of single amino acid metabolic disorders like phenylketonuria, tyrosinemia, hypertryptophanemia, cystinuria and hypermethioninemia respectively. Hence, studying aggregation behaviour of single amino acids is very crucial to assess the underlying molecular mechanism behind metabolic disorders. In this manuscript we report for the very first time the aggregation properties of non-aromatic single amino acids Hydroxy-proline and Proline. The morphologies of these were studied extensively by Optical microscopy (OM), ThT binding fluorescence microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM). It can be assessed that these amino acids form globular structures at lower concentrations and gradually changes to tape like structures on increasing the concentration as assessed by AFM. ThT and CR binding assay reveal the aggregates do have amyloid like characteristics. Further MTT assays on SHSY5Y neural cell lines reveal cytotoxicity and the aggregates caused significant cell death in dose dependent manner. These results have important implications in understanding the pathophysiology of single amino acid disorders like Hyperprolinemia and Hydroxyprolinemia in association with amyloid diseases. The symptoms of these diseases are also accompanied by extensive neurological problems like intellectual disability, seizures and psychiatric problems which further evince amyloid like etiology for these rare in-born errors of metabolism.</p>

Abstract The considerations included in the article are the result of several years of teaching general methodology for doctoral studies at Josef Pilsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw.The presented text consists of two basic parts. The first includes reminiscences and associated methodological resentment. The second presents a wide panorama of standpoints concerning functions and kinds of hypotheses, their role and significance in contemporary research programs of formal, empirical (connected with natural sciences and biology), and humanities nature. Sketchy and encyclopaedic interpretations, presented in the context of commentaries by the author of this paper, thereby dominate.The aim of the first part is to draw attention to some methodological mistakes which often appear and which have become common in some academic milieus to such a degree that some intervention and postulatory correction, referring to Polish and Western methodological literature, is advisable. These shortcomings are connected, among other things, with the structure of the scientific work, with the formulation and application of hypotheses, with relations taking place between the general methodology and specialized methodologies, kinds and types of research work, with reliability of information on sources of creative information, as well with the category of verification in its relation, on the one hand, to confirmation and corroboration, and on the other hand, to testing, checking, falsification, and terms close in meaning to the last one.The abovementioned resentment results, first of all, from the fact that the authors discussed in the first part usually insist on erroneous solutions, negating a priori, without becoming acquainted with the literature on the subject or making attempts to explain or initiate a methodological argument referring to sources and studies.That resentment is significant, among other things, in the causal sense - that is, because of the fact that, firstly, it justifies and substantiates the need for a statement presenting controversial questions in a content-related and formal way. Secondly, because thanks to such (that is, cognitive-emotional) introduction, the whole argument - not only in the first, but also in the second part - is much more interesting. It is saturated with authenticity. Many readers know the figures mentioned and are familiar with their - sometimes too insouciant (sometimes not very reliable) - attitudes to important issues from the field of research methods. It is also interesting why the people cited make mistakes. Hence, it is also advisable to look at a wider methodological context of justification (included in the much longer second part) dedicated to perhaps the most thorough characteristics of the hypothesis in the literature on the subject, which is available to the author. Without presentation of the controversial issues in the first part, the second part, more important from the methodological viewpoint, might be omitted by a considerable proportion of readers. In that part attention is paid mainly to issues concerning working, initial, zero, primary, introductory, directing, gradual, auxiliary, ad hoc auxiliary, bridge, futile and true, dangerous and safe, quite natural and neutral, individual and general, complete and incomplete, deep, strong, probabilistic and non-probabilistic (that is, deterministic), related, falsifying, basic, psychological, metaphysical and materialist hypotheses, as well as those concluding ones - that is, those constituting the final effect of definite (concluded here and now) research; hence, those which have undergone verification, confirmation, corroboration or modification as those which predict and explain a given research problem in the best possible way.
