This research work is dedicated to a topical theme from the science’s point of view. The main goals are to study the role of competitions in history tournaments for students in the development of scientific communication in the process of studying at university. The experimental part of the study included 130 respondents: 100 students as participants of tournament competitions and 30 jury members who evaluated the tournament games and participated in the study of this innovative phenomenon. To determine the effectiveness of tournament competitions and their role in the development of scientific communication, an observation method was used to identify the feelings and behaviour of tournament participants at different stages of the game. The comparative method was used to identify the peculiarities of tournament competitions in the system of competitions, contests held in Ukraine. The survey method was used to identify the level of achievement of participants during the tournament and the impact of tournament competitions on further study and research activities of students. The results of the study proved to be an important factor in the development of scientific communication among students. This fact caused the ability of student’s youth to work in a team and to carry out scientific research and protect own ideas. As a result of the study, it was discovered that students who studied the science themes prior to the tournament and participated in tournament competitions (public defence and opposition) had significantly higher levels of academic achievement than their classmates. A good deal of students noted that during the tournament competitions they communicated with jury members (scholars from all over Ukraine) and got much historical information according to important achievements in historical science, new ideas and concepts, little-known historians so far. According to the results of the study, it was recommended to create a scientific discussion colloquium among students who are interested in investigating science of domestic and foreign scholars.

Publication of the collection of materials of the IV All-Ukrainian scientific-practical distance conference (with international participation) "Contemporary musical art as a socio-cultural phenomenon", which took place on April 6-7, 2020 at the Dnipropetrovsk Academy of Music. M. Glinka, an extraordinary event in the scientific life of the school. First of all, holding a scientific meeting in a remote form was a consequence of the situation of strict quarantine caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Strict sanitary and epidemiological norms, lack of public transport, in a relatively short period of time changed the traditional, emotional and sensual "live" form of communication of scientists off-line, forcibly a new format of scientific discussion, namely - on-line.

The terms of literary studies and linguistics concerning stylistics should be viewed in complex, i. e., in a joint concept system. If this is not the case, the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, the development of criticism, and scientific communication in the humanitarian fields as a whole are impeded. The article deals with one of the most unusual tropes – zeugma. For the background information, an insight into the comprehension of the system of tropes in Latvian stylistics is given where zeugma is insufficiently explained; therefore, it is crucial to clarify the main characteristic of the concept. Several terminological sources in English have been selected for the explanation of the concept and provision of examples. In Latvian theoretical literature and study books, there are ambiguous definitions of this term and also different versions of the term itself. In total, the word zeigma (and not zeugma) is considered to be the most appropriate equivalent in Latvian, and the explanation of the term could be as follows: zeugma is a kind of tropes in which a word (most commonly a verb) is used simultaneously in two or more meanings in the same sentence, with an unexpected transfer of meaning creating different semantic relations. Examples from Latvian poetry (Aleksandrs Čaks, Austra Skujiņa) and prose (Anšlavs Eglītis, Regīna Ezera, Andra Manfelde, Andris Akmentiņš) are used to present zeugma as a kind of tropes.

Twenty years of Cambridge Opera Journal: in view of the journal's place in the discipline, the occasion seemed worth marking. When Roger Parker and Arthur Groos founded Cambridge Opera Journal in 1989, it offered the first forum to the musical community for serious opera criticism that took into account changing orientations in literary studies and seriously engaged with ideology, reception history, and representations of race, class and gender. Subsequent editors – Mary Hunter, Mary Ann Smart, and Emanuele Senici – continued to foster this wide intellectual perspective and to engage with an extraordinary variety of methodologies. For the current issue, we gave carte blanche to authors who contributed in the first two years of publication to reflect on their past work, or on opera studies, or on the journal, either informally as an opinion piece or through new scholarship – and so to measure time by developments in the discipline itself.

Of considerable interest in the study of the housebuilding traditions and innovations of the Finno-Ugric population of the forest belt of the Middle Volga region are the works of the 18th – early 20th century researchers. In this period, random episodic surveys were carried out in the territory of the Middle Volga region. A significant event was the holding of the 4thArchaeological Congress in Kazan in 1877, during which it was decided to publish the annual scientific journal “Bulletin of the Society of Archaeology, History and Ethnography (IOAIE)”. The journal not only provided information about the newly discovered archaeological artifacts and sites, but also featured a scientific discussion concerning the possibility of housebuilding development across the population of the Middle Volga region. The issue of the construction of permanent structures in the territory was also of interest for geologists, natural scientists and ethnographers. In this regard, the purpose of the paper is to analyze the scientific works of the 18th – early 20th centuries dedicated to the study of the origins and development of housebuilding practiced by the population of the forest belt of the Middle Volga region in the 2nd – 1st millennium BC. The authors came to the conclusion that archaeological research and ethnographic realities presented in the scientific evidence of the 18th – early 20thcenturies are of great importance in terms of source studies for the research of the various aspects of the life of the ancient population of the region.

The intensity of a specrtal line from an optically thin plasma such as the outer atmosphere of the sun depends on both the atomic properties of the atomic ion responsible for the line and the physical nature of the plasma. In this paper we discuss the various ways in which the measured spectral intensities from the sun are used to discover something about the nature of the sun’s atmosphere. The technique has been referred to as the emission measure method. It has important limitations in terms of the accuracy of the specrtal data as well as the atomic data. We discuss some of these and suggest methods by which they may be assessed. The technique is illustrated by application to real observations from a number of authors.

Fossils are characteristically uncommon, making it impossible to distribute original specimens to all interested investigators. Dissemination of information, therefore, often depends upon the circulation of accurate reproductions. Such reproductions or casts can be made from a variety of materials including plasters and two-part resins. Using resins for the casting of paleontological specimens was discussed by a number of authors, including Burke and Jensen, 1961; Madsen, 1974; Parsons, 1973; Schrimper, 1973; Reser, 1981; and Burke et al., 1983 (see additional references in Hannibal, this volume, chapter 6). Plaster casting is covered by Babcock (this volume, chapter 34).

Exemplary for other than English-language psychology journals, the impact of recent Anglicization of five former German-language psychology journals on (1) authorship (nationality, i.e., native language, and number of authors, i.e., single or multiple authorships), (2) formal characteristics of the journal (number of articles per volume and length of articles), and (3) number of citations of the articles in other journal articles, the language of the citing publications, and the impact factors (IF) is analyzed. Scientometric data on these variables are gathered for all articles published in the four years before anglicizing and in the four years after anglicizing the same journal. Results reveal rather quick changes: Citations per year since original articles’ publication increase significantly, and the IF of the journals go up markedly. Frequencies of citing in German-language journals decrease, citing in English-language journals increase significantly after the Anglicization of former German-language psychology journals, and there is a general trend of increasing citations in other languages as well. Side effects of anglicizing former German-language psychology journals include the publication of shorter papers, their availability to a more international authorship, and a slight, but significant increase in multiple authorships.
