Lipid Profile, Low-Density Lipoprotein Oxidation and Ceruloplasmin in the Progeny of Families with a Positive History of Cardiovascular Diseases and/or Hyperlipidemia

Fifty-eight healthy progeny (mean age ± SD 13.9 ± 7.9 years) of 39 families with a positive history for Cardiovascular Diseases ([CVD] n = 44) or hyperlipidemia (n = 14) were included in the study and were compared with 30 age-matched control participants, with a negative family history, to evaluate lipid profile, ceruloplasmin (Cp), and lipid peroxidation product (malondialdehyde [MDA]) levels, as well as in vitro copper-induced Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidizability. Mean serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B-100, and MDA of the participants were significantly higher than those of the controls. Lag time, an LDL resistance oxidation marker, was lower in the study group and negatively correlated with LDL-C ( r = -.437, P < .05) and Cp ( r = -.272, P < .05) serum levels. In conclusion, progeny with a positive family history for CVD or hyperlipidemia have an atherogenic lipid profile and increased LDL susceptibility to oxidation. High Cp levels seem to be related to lower resistance of LDL to oxidation.

AbstractSelenium is an essential mineral that plays a key role in plenty of major metabolic processes. A growing body of literature has shown that selenium deficiency leads to an increase in plasma TC and TG levels. This study explores the effect of selenium supplementation on serum level of lipid profile [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)]. We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI/WOS, and Scopus (from their commencements to Jan 2016) to identify the papers investigating the association between the intake of selenium and lipid profile. Data extracted from the relevant studies were screened. The pooled standardized mean difference was estimated using the random or fixed effects model. Heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using Q-test. Of the potentially relevant articles screened, 11 articles including 1221 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Results of meta-analysis showed that intake of selenium resulted in a statistically significant improvement in TC, [(SMD): –0.13, 95% CI: (–0.24, –0.02)], TG [(SMD): –0.19, 95% CI: (–0.38, –0.01)] and VLDL [(SMD): –0.34, 95% CI: (–0.63, –0.05)]. The selenium supplementation did not significantly improve lipid profile such as LDL [(SMD): –0.08, 95% CI: (–0.036, 0.19)], HDL [(SMD): 0.01, 95% CI: (–0.164, 0.18)], HDL/TC ratio [(SMD): 0.025, 95% CI: (–0.11, 0.16)], non-HDL-C [(SMD): 0.018, 95% CI: (–0.13, 0.16)]. This meta-analysis suggests that the effect of selenium supplementation on the serum levels of TG and VLDL is marginally significant. However, the supplementation has no effect on other serum lipids. Moreover, the study shows that the effect of selenium supplementation on lipid profile is negative.

We evaluated the potential cardiovascular risk protection of bilirubin in hemodialysis (HD) patients. An enlarged set of studies were evaluated in 191 HD patients, including hematological study, lipid profile, iron metabolism, nutritional, inflammatory markers, and dialysis adequacy. The TA duplication screening in the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1 A1 (UGT1A1) promoter region was also performed. TheUGT1A1genotype frequencies in HD patients were 49.2%, 42.4%, and 8.4% for 6/6, 6/7, and 7/7 genotypes, respectively. Although no difference was found inUGT1A1genotype distribution between the three tertiles of bilirubin, significant differences were found with increasing bilirubin levels, namely, a decrease in platelet, leukocyte, and lymphocyte counts, transferrin, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), ox-LDL/low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, apolipoprotein (Apo) A, Apo B, and interleukin-6 serum levels and a significant increased concentration of hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte count, iron, transferrin saturation, Apo A/Apo B ratio, adiponectin, and paraoxonase 1 serum levels. After adjustment for age these results remained significant. Our data suggest that higher bilirubin levels are associated with beneficial effects in HD patients, by improving lipid profile and reducing the inflammatory grade, which might contribute to increase in iron availability. These results suggest a potential cardiovascular risk protection of bilirubin in HD patients.

Background. In adults, a low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/apolipoprotein B-100 (ApoB) ratio is an indicator of ApoB-enriched small dense LDL, which is associated with premature coronary artery disease (CAD). Since this LDL subclass may be inherited, we investigated whether a low LDL-C/ApoB ratio was associated with a positive family history of premature CAD in young children. Methods. Subjects were 66 children aged 7 to 11 years who were recruited through a school-based family history survey, flyers, and hospital newspaper advertisements. They were divided according to family history and assessed for fatness, blood pressure, lipids, lipoproteins, and apoproteins. Results. Family history interacted with gender such that girls with a positive family history had a lower LDL-C/ApoB ratio than girls with a negative family history, while the opposite was true in boys; ie, family history-positive boys had a higher ratio than family history-negative boys. The association of a low ratio with a positive family history was seen most clearly in white girls. Family history-positive whites had higher ApoB than family history-negative whites, whereas the pattern was reversed in the blacks. The LDL-C/ApoB ratio and ApoB were not related to other CAD risk factors such as fatness, blood pressure, or other lipids and lipoproteins. Conclusion. In young children, a low LDL-C/ApoB ratio and high ApoB levels were associated with a positive family history of CAD only in the white girls, suggesting that this group is at increased risk of genetically mediated CAD.

ABSTRACTLipid abnormalities in hypothyroidism contribute to the disproportionate increase in cardiovascular risk. A possible relationship between serum level of magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) and cardiovascular disease was recorded. In this work, the possible correlation between lipid profile components and serum cations Ca and Mg was investigated. Matched healthy women were evaluated in a cross-sectional study. All parameters were measured spectrophotometrically. The results showed a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), total and ionized Mg in hypothyroid patients in comparing with control group. There was a significant increase (P <0.05) in serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and (LDL-C)/(HDL-C) ratio in hypothyroid patients as compared with control group. However, no correlation was found between the cation levels and lipid profile of the studied groups. It can be concluded that patients with hypothyroidism exhibited elevated atherogenic parameters (TC and LDL-C) and high risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of turmeric and ginger on lipid profile of male rats exposed to oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide H2O2 at a concentration of 1% given with consumed drinking water to male rats. Methods: 200 mg/kg from turmeric and ginger were used, and the animals were treatment for 30 days. Results: the results showed a significant increase in cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), whereas it explained a significant decrease in high density lipoprotein (HDL) of male rats exposed to oxidative stress when compared with control group. the results showed a significant decrease in cholesterol, triglycerides, (LDL), (VLDL), whereas it explained a significant increase in (HDL) of rats treated with turmeric and ginger at dose 200 mg/kg when compared with male rats exposed to oxidative stress.

The incorporation of the lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal into low-density lipoprotein (LDL) increases the negative charge of the particle, and decreases its affinity for the fibroblast LDL receptor. It is suggested that this modification may occur in vivo, and might promote atherogenesis.

Abstract Background Exposure to arsenic orchestrates a myriad of noxious health effects, including cancer. Different parts of Irvingia gabonensis are used as herbal remedies in traditional medicine. In this study, the comparative effects of the ethanol leaf (ELEIG) and stem bark extracts (ESEIG) of Irvingia gabonensis on sodium arsenite (SA)-induced lipid profile disturbances in Wistar rats were investigated. Methods Fifty five Wistar rats weighing between 100 g and 179 g were distributed into eleven groups (n=5). Group 1 (control) received feed and water ad libitum. Group 2 received SA at a dose of 4.1 mg/kg body weight (kgbw) for 14 days. Groups 3–11 were treated with the extracts with or without SA. Treatment was done by oral intubation for 14 days. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TAG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), total lipids (TL) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were used to determine the lipid profile effects of the extracts. Results Exposure to SA caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in all assayed parameters, relative to control. Post-treatment and simultaneous treatment with ELEIG and ESEIG mitigated the effects of SA. In addition, ELEIG alone at various doses produced results comparable with control values. However, ESEIG alone caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in all assayed parameters, relative to control. Conclusion These results show that ELEIG and ESEIG ameliorate SA-induced lipid profile disturbances in Wistar rats. However, long-term administration of ESEIG alone may be discouraged.

BACKGROUND Chronic kidney disease (CKD) includes a spectrum of different pathophysiology processes associated with abnormal kidney function, and a progressive decline in GFR. Progression of CKD is associated with having a number of complications, including thyroid dysfunction, dyslipidaemia, and cardiovascular diseases. METHODS The present study was conducted among 60 CKD patients (cases) and 60 healthy controls to compare their thyroid and lipid profile, who attended the Department of Medicine in SGRDIMSR, Sri Amritsar from January 2019 to December 2020.These 60 CKD patients were grouped as group A. Group A was further divided into various stages as per KIDGO staging according to GFR. 60 healthy individuals were taken as controls and were kept as Group B. Demographic features (age and sex) and medical history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension were noted and blood samples (5mL) were analysed for blood urea, serum creatinine, free triiodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine (T4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglycerides. RESULTS Thyroid dysfunction was observed in patients of CKD, the most common being overt hypothyroidism (56.6 %) followed by subclinical hypothyroidism (16.6 %), low T3 (15 %), and hyperthyroidism (1.6 %). Hypercholesterolemia, low HDL, elevated LDL, VLDL and triglyceride levels were observed in 74.9 %, 85.0 %, 38.3 %, 41.6 % and 76.6 % patients, respectively. Patients with CKD with 5 had significantly higher risk of having thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidaemia as compared to patients with stage 3 and 4. CONCLUSIONS Thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidaemia were common in patients with CKD. Prevalence of hypothyroidism, dyslipidaemia increases with progression of CKD. Hence early detection of thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidaemia is imperative to improve mortality and morbidity of CKD patients. KEYWORDS Chronic Kidney Disease, Dyslipidaemia, Thyroid Dysfunction

The present study evaluated the effect of whole egg consumption on the liver, testes, cauda epididymal sperm reserve and lipid profile of male rats. These evaluations were carried out on adult twenty (20) male albino rats, which were randomly selected into four groups of 5 rats each, designated groups A, B, C and D. Group A was the control group and received only equivalent volume of distilled water, while groups B, C and D received 0.25mg/kg, 0.5mg/kg; and 1.0mg/kg body weight of the quail egg respectively. Standard procedures were carried out in the tissue processing, cauda epididymal sperm reserve and in lipid profile determinations. On days 35 and 49, the mean serum total cholesterol value of group D was significantly lower than that of the control group. On day 35, the mean serum low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL cholesterol) values of all the treatment groups were significantly lower and higher than that of the control group, respectively. However, on days 49 and 63, the mean serum very low density lipoprotein (VLDL cholesterol) and triglyceride values of all the treatment groups were significantly higher than that of the control group. A significant increase in cadual epididymal sperm count (CESR) was recorded on day 63 at the mid and high doses. No obvious pathological lesions were observed in the histomorphology of the testes and liver when compared to the control. Therefore, whole quail egg consumption caused an increase in serum triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein concentration, and also improved fertility. In other words, prolonged consumption of quail egg should be done with caution as it may predispose one to cardiovascular disease.
