Beyond the Institutional Order: Culture and the Formation of New Political Subjects in the Peripheries of São Paulo

Ethnographic research on the formation of new political subjects in the peripheries of São Paulo in a context of progressive governments and intense economic and social change suggests that cultural groups and especially poetry recitals play a fundamental role in a cultural struggle to articulate the valuation of a more communal way of life and a peripheral identity. In addition to contributing to the emergence of new public issues in the outskirts of São Paulo, the recitals have become known as venues for political formation in opposition to or in addition to more established spaces such as nongovernmental organizations, political parties, and the state itself. Pesquisas etnográficas sobre a formação de novos sujeitos políticos nas periferias de São Paulo, em um contexto de governos progressistas e intensa mudança econômica e social, sugerem que grupos culturais e, especialmente, saraus de poesia desempenham papel fundamental na luta cultural para articular a valorização de uma sociedade com mais estilo de vida comunitária e uma identidade periférica. Além de contribuir para o surgimento de novas questões públicas nos arredores de São Paulo, os saraus ficaram conhecidos como locais de formação política de oposição contra, ou além de, espaços mais estabelecidos, como organizações não-governamentais, partidos políticos e o próprio Estado.

In the present study, we dealt with the relationship between lifestyle and adherence to the physical activity and discussed the conditions that make it possible for amateur to remain in a complex practice as surfing. For these purpose, we interviewed eleven surfers with over eleven years of uninterrupted practice on the South Coast of São Paulo. Through an analysis of the interviews content, it was possible to verify that their permanence is less influenced by gender issues, age and marital status (usually prioritized in the literature about this subject) than employment conditions. It is argued that adherence to surfing is linked to lifestyle and youth ideals, while the conditions for the continuity of the amateurs practice involves the family and employment ties, whose stability gives security to the routine and modulates the possibilities between social times and nature times. Thus, mature surfers narrate a way of life that values prudent attitudes as a way of redefining surfing in their lives, pointing out to a transformation of surf culture. It is considered that the relationship between permanence in practice and job stability deserves to be investigated in future studies

This paper reflects on the role of folklore festivals in the contemporary world. Based on ethnographic research carried out in the context of the Folklore Festival of Olímpia – FEFOL – (São Paulo/Brazil) and with Pastoril Dona Joaquina de São Gonçalo do Amarante (Rio Grande do Norte/Brazil), folklore festivals will be understood as new contexts of performance for the practices of the performative groups of Brazilian popular cultures. The reflection is based on Wenger (2012) and Turino (2008).

The city of São Paulo, historically important as a destination for migrants from across the world, has experienced newer waves of immigration in the past few decades. As Brazilian national legislation and municipal policies have been ill prepared to handle these recent flows, migrants find themselves without much institutional support and rely instead on other networks to find their way in the city. This article is based on ethnographic research among low-income migrants in São Paulo, many of whom are employed as tailors and garment vendors in the city’s thriving central commercial neighbourhoods. Migrants from Bolivia, Peru, China, Pakistan and Nepal co-exist alongside working-class Brazilians. This article traces the everyday forms of conviviality among these migrants who find themselves in precarious conditions in São Paulo. It will consider the lines along which friendships and networks of support and sociability are built and the depth of such relationships. It also considers the points of tension which divide people and strain potential friendships, for instance, when migrants compete to sell their goods and are exploited by ‘fellow migrants’ to survive in the city. What we see is an ambivalent field of interaction that is convivial yet competitive and distrustful.

This article is based on ethnographic research carried out in male sex clubs in São Paulo between 2006 and 2008. Drawing on interviews conducted with club-goers and club owners, it discusses the recent segmentation of the sexual leisure market for men in the city, and the processes by which stereotypes and characteristics associated with virility are valued and performed. The possible effects of these processes on subjectivity constitution are also investigated. In sex clubs, sexual practices considered borderline, such as fist-fucking and other practices associated with BDSM, are material for specific and refined learning. The data gathered from interviews show that condom use and drug and alcohol consumption are subject to a sort of surveillance and control, especially when it comes to their questions of 'excess'. This control provides sex clubs with a sense of legitimacy, making them part of a viable erotic market. The intention here is to demonstrate the analytical interest of this control in the context of the construction of subjects and bodies that matter in these venues. Like practices which evoke control or loss thereof, bodies and clubs need to have their excesses checked so that they are intelligible and desirable.

This article is based on ethnographic research that has developed in the São Paulo region known as Cracolândia. Ethnographic accounts are added to the portion of academic literature on the subject, some news in the media and excerpts from conversations with visitors from that specific part of the neighborhood of Luz. Through them, we seek to make sense of a more human picture of the place and the people who have found a way of life there. We have come to know that people who use crack in that context cannot be scaled solely by their drug use; and that even Cracolândia can be perceived and experienced as a place full of joy and humanity, despite the moral panic surrounding crack.

Critics of contemporary liberalism question whether the expansion of human and social rights can deliver radical social change. Drawing on ethnographic research in São Paulo, this article challenges this view by analysing how the discourse of rights has been critically redeployed by a radical Homeless Workers’ Movement – the Brazilian Movimento dos Trabalhadores sem Teto (MTST). The MTST’s strategic use of a discursive framework of social rights problematises existing scholarship which fails to account for the ways in which activists rework and redeploy ideas of rights in practice. In particular, the article demonstrates the centrality of rights discourse to the formation of radical political subjectivities and the emancipatory goals pursued by the MTST. This counter-hegemonic politics of rights re-signifies liberal discourse, exceeding its conventional juridical boundaries: it creates politicisation in occupations, and it constitutes a strategy of counter-conducts vis-à-vis neoliberal governmentality.

O cinema está inserido nas mediações culturais desde as primeiras décadas do século XX e quando analisado na forma de documento histórico, nos auxilia na compreensão de imagens e representações de seu tempo. Durante o final da década de 1930 e início de 1940, a indústria cinematográfica estadunidense estava quase que inteiramente voltada para os esforços da Segunda Guerra Mundial, assim como para a Política de Boa Vizinhança que os Estados Unidos exerciam na América Latina. Hollywood produzia filmes, séries, animações e propagandas para o governo estadunidense divulgar o American Way of Life no continente. Nesse contexto, Walt Disney atuou como um dos principais embaixadores da Política de Boa Vizinhança no Brasil, quando esteve no país em agosto de 1941, patrocinado pelo Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, o OCIAA, para promover o lançamento da animação Fantasia (1940) nas capitais do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. O nosso principal objetivo neste trabalho é analisar parte do processo de hegemonia estadunidense no Brasil a partir de alguns meios de comunicação e cultura, que preconizavam a democracia mediante um discurso de modernidade e civilização. A partir de alguns periódicos nacionais da época, podemos analisar a recepção da mídia brasileira em relação à Walt Disney e Fantasia que, assim como o cinema, atuaram não apenas como meios, mas também como mediações entre os interesses dos governos estadunidense e brasileiro.

Resumo: O presente artigo se fundamenta na abordagem pragmatista do filósofo norte-americano Richard Rorty sobre o uso da narrativa do gênero documentário. Pois trata da análise e apresentação de possibilidades de ensino contextualizado de temas de Filosofia a partir do documentário Tarja Branca - A Revolução Que Faltava. Deste modo, iniciamos com a ênfase no uso de documentários como ferramenta de sensibilização e, portanto, contextualização do ensino. Em seguida, elencamos argumentos e discussões acerca do modo de vida estandardizado da sociedade capitalista contemporânea à luz do documentário e dos respectivos temas de Filosofia: Sociedade Disciplinar, Sociedade de Controle, Liberdade versus Determinismo. Cada tema filosófico apresenta uma articulação com o documentário, textos e atividade sugeridas. Palavras-chave: Ensino de Filosofia. Pragmatismo. Documentário. Abstract: The present article is based on a pragmatic approach of the American philosopher Richard Rorty about the use of narrative of the documentary genre. For it, deals with the analysis and presentation of contextualized teaching possibilities of Philosophy themes from Tarja Branca documentary. In this way, we started by emphasizing the use of documentaries as an awareness tool and, therefore, a contextualization of teaching. Next, we list arguments and discussions about the standardized way of life of contemporary capitalist society at the light of the documentary and the respective Philosophy themes: Disciplinary Society, Control Society, Liberty versus Determinism.
